Charly's story was an excellent example of how to execute character development. She was designed in a way that people would dislike her but she still had an understandable explanation for her persona, then she evolved through plausible scenarios to the point where she had changed her perspective enough for a grand finale self-sacrifice that tugged at audience's hearstrings. Bravo Charly and bravo Orville.

Yeah it was a very necessary sacrifice for the plot to make sense, for an organic to stay and sacrifice their own life to protect a race of machines that have tried to kill them is a very hard thing for the machines to ignore and since Kaylon Primary seems to be the head of a hive mind of sorts it couldnt have happened in front of anyone better. He needed to be there in person to not have any doubts that it was fabricated. Their whole premise for killing all organic life was that because their own creators tried to kill them and enslave them then all organics must be the same way. This proved that not all organics wanted them dead and that some would even go so far as to die to make sure that they had the right to exist, the Union could have easily walked away and let the Kaylon die and chose not to.

It's the utter shock that all his understandings, might be wrong. It's what makes the Kaylon a very sympathetic force. Issac doesn't get the same experiences so he absorbs the good of organics early, he sees empirical evidence of the kindness and selflessness of organics first, not their cruelty, so when he comes into contact with the negative sides of organics they don't get to become the basis of his beliefs, Primary did however, so it took something like this, something so brazen something so selfless as to be willing to die for the very people she hated and had every right to want dead, that finally broke through the 'Organics=bad' math that had infested kaylon understanding for so long.

Charlie/Charly was a great character. I'm not saying she was a "nice" character though, she was rough around the edges. Which allowed for character growth, and her hating the Kaylons made her sacrifice mean so much more. I actually respected the fact that she died still hating the Kaylon - yet still felt it was her duty to stop the weapon from firing and committing genocide. Sci-fi at its core isn't about the flashy SFX or the glamorous sets that cost way too much. No. Sci-fi is, as Gene Roddenberry would've said it, about the human condition and bringing us together in ways that defy explanation. This scene, even with the heavy SFX is that much more impactful because we the audience understand the stakes and the ultimate sacrifice Charly made. Thank you, Seth MacFarlane, for bringing us Orville fans together since again, even if it's just to mourn.

Yes, that's why this episode is so terrible because it says spend so much time on space, battles and actions in basements. Instead, it should have been like Roddenberry's Conscience of the King where it was a human drama or even TNG's I borg.

@valueofnothing2487 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlazingOwnager What about Transformers? Transformers is loaded with action. Do you like that as well? Is that 'Star Wars'? What is the difference? I submit the cgi and choreography was pretty bad as well - with few great set pieces and mostly blurring backgrounds and close up of ships - meanwhile they literally flash white into your eyes proving that the visuals aren't enough. And why Kelly fighting in the basement? They weren't even a significant part of this episode! Action, by itself, is pointless - in my opinion. The reason we like the action in Star Wars is because of all the time spent on developing it's characters - at least in the better Star Wars. But this episode was about Burke's character arc to get her to change her mind. We are not shown anything about her. It is character development by plot twist. We need a human drama (I believe) like Conscience of the King or I, Borg. Those are great episodes. And what about Ted Danson's character? Why did he do what he did? Why weren't we shown that? Why did we listen to Gordon playing guitar and people at a party? This episode was simply poorly written.

In the conscious of the King, daughter of the genocidal maniac becomes literally insane. And because Burke doesn't have this psychological reaction, she just comes across as cartoonish. When you see Penny Jackson act, she will often look like she is trying to find the words to express herself. Winter's just says the words. Her emotion is always the same in every sentence she makes. Jackson varies the emotion and you can tell. She's trying to figure out what words to say and she appears thoughtful in her lines. That is just a simple comparison of why Winters is a bad actress and Jackson is a good one. Winters is even worse because her mannerisms suggest a certain superficiality. She rolls her eyes, she appears spiteful, and petulant.These are the reactions of people who have spent of lifetime with superficial annoyances. An Orville officer would simply state their point of view and be confident of their power and training. They would not be passive, aggressive or spiteful. @@OneGaurdian the kaylon supposedly [never] attacked anyone before in history, which is why the kaylon past was surprising, no one had ever know they were created, in fact the kaylon almost never interacted with anyone, thus Issac was allowed to join the orville, it was too rare of an opportunity to interact with a species that never talked to anyone outside their planet before. The season #1 finale was a "surprise" because it was unfounded for the kaylon to do an attack after never going to war with anyone, they were isolationists. Meanwhile, the audience could infer the krill has been killing millions/billions for as long as the union has existed (maybe the reason the union was formed) The krill had an episode where they were testing planetary nukes on farming villages. Not to mention the show has scenes of the krill pulling out a human's decapitated head and just repeatedly stabbing it while doing morning prayers. All of this has been known info since season 1, which is what makes Charlie a mega-hypocrite. She continues to tell people to get over hating the krill ( so they can join up to kill kaylon) but when people tell her to chill on the "racism" (aka her hatred of the race kaylon) she's pissed about it. Captain Mercier even has to pull her aside one episode and just straight up tell her; she not the only person to ever had a love one die, she doesn't get to call a monopoly on the pity parade.

I don't agree with going after the actor, But show/writing-wise? multiple characters tried to explain the problem to charlie, and it got to the point mid season where she admitted she was the problem but still didn't care and stuck to her guns. because she chose to see things purely in a convenient way to justify her anger. Basically everyone was saying her feelings were valid, but her blind racism wasn't, and every single time she would tell everyone, every episode "ya, but I still think this time, racism might be okay"

@@BlazingOwnager I'm not missing the point, I completely understand the character arch. I just found the character insufferable. The krill had been killing humans for years and the kaylon started like a week ago in the shows timeline. millions to billions of people had to be killed by the krill more than the kaylon ever did, so they had the same storyline with the krill that Charlie had to the kaylon yet she was more than willing to side to the krill. It's hamfisted hypocrisy. Just because it was sad to see the character die, AND they did something nice at the end, doesn't actually mean the character doesn't change the bad things about them. Her dying at the end, (for me did) did not make her scenes better I did not like seeing the character walk on set. Some people felt the same thing whenever they had a Moylan storyline, it was just too awkward. Although, personally I felt the bortus and topa storyline had a worthwhile payoff

You know I was watching an episode where Lt Keyali got into a heated exchange with a Moclan and Mercer quickly snapped at her and dismissed her from the meeting room. Then we have Ensign Burke, who repeatedly mouths off to senior officers and instead of reprimands, he basically apologizes to her for asking her to reign it in. I couldn't stand her. She was a poorly written character and not believable; arrogant, insubordinate, and as clear an example of nepotism as there is. The episode itself was great, she got a great send off.

She had just lost All her friends and the girl she loved and the Captain knew it. Still, I don't think that behavior would have been tolerated indefinitely. She also had an extraordinary intellect and was uniquely useful on at least two occasions. Also, she didn't disrupt a meeting... which is a big no, no in any military or corporate organization. As it was, she put off several of the other crew. She refused to repair Isaac, but ultimately caved and followed orders. You will also note that despite hushing Lt Keyali abruptly in the meeting, there was no followup, merely diffusing the situation.

I have heard it said many times but I will say it again, the Orville is the new Star Trek. Just like TNG it has evolved and matured in the season 3, I have gotten invested into its characters and connected with them, just like its supposed to be with good movies or shows. However, I have not gotten connected with STD, Picard or any other new Trek. Charly was a good character and a good actor, with proper character growth. She will be sorely missed...
