Yeah I was only a little upset that half of her chat instantly tried to spoil it. You could just leave it at "They fixed it, just like they fixed the first arc" and left it alone. Alfheims episodes are basically all better than most of the first arcs episodes, with some exceptions. (10 and 11 are legendary and compete for the best episode of the abridged still. The *most recent* episode is the other major competitor, imo.)

I actually knew about Dungeon Master when I first watched this episode, so that last line hit really hard for me because I saw what they were doing with that; setting up Kayaba to be a reflection of Kirito without friends, and showing that the link between them is severed because of everything that happened with them. Also, Metamorphosis is a horrific story essentially about a series of tragedies. The author, Shindo L, however, didnt just write it for the sake of making an edgy and demonic story; apparently he said that what happens in MetaM. was based on his own experiences of stories hed heard from people while living in NY or sum. It is a very no bueno story for the faint of heart or very empathetic people💀

Actually, Something Witty did a pretty good job rewriting the Alfheim arc. No more incest or tentacle stuff, Asuna stays fearsome, and the creepiest thing by far is the actual bad guy. I recommend watching it and I hope the next episode of that arc is released by the time you get up to date if you choose to do so.

The biggest thing I loved with the original version of this finale was that little smile on Heathcliff/Kayaba's face as he *allowed* Kirito to run him through - it showcased that he saw the attack coming from a mile away, but deliberately chose to allow it to strike him down because (as far as I'm concerned) what Kayaba was truly after was crafting an epic fantasy story, and what kind of "author" would he have been if he'd wasted that moment of the Hero overcoming death itself to strike down the Villain?

What I like about this episode is all of the callbacks from previous episodes are paying off. As seen throughout the whole first season! From the commentary on the teleport crystals, the constant movie references that Kayaba made, to the constant glitches in the game. It just goes to show how much care the writers put into the show. And it continues into the next season, and hopefully the next (wink wink)!

The reason Kayaba originally "forgot" his reason for creating SAO was because SAO volume 1 was meant to be a one-off for a writing competition. There wasn't more planned originally. It was only in his later reoccurring cameos throughout the novels that we learn his plan.

Now you could ask why didn't he change this plot point when he switched to writing the light novels (it was originally a web novel) because by then he knew he was writing an entire series.

Kirito in the original: finds it weird the commander of an army is standing while everyone is exhausted takes his health not being incredibly low as suspicious just attacks him out of a complete and udder guess reasoning: "there's nothing more boring than watching someone else play a video game. Kirito In The Abridged: References a film he figures people wouldn't get, to which Kayaba not only got, let it slip with "NOW you've seen it" recalls how many times he's been referencing movies, way back to "How Many of you have seen Tron?" attacks him, hoping to god he's actually right Reasoning: You're the only one in this game who makes as many movie references as i do. Genuinely, as someone who used to be a fan of the original, Kirito's logic baffled me, as opposed to the Abridged where it does a good job of explaining how the fuck we got here. Kayaba's reasoning In the original: "it's been so long, i've forgotten the reason" makes a long somber speech about his dream regarding a castle Kirito sympathizes. and...everything before this with him trapping countless people in the game and over 2000 people had died, just kinda not even a problem. Kayaba's Reasoning in the Abridged: "I did this because of Metacritic" explains further about the unfortunate reality of Game Development on a deadline, crunching nonstop until you can make ends meet, admittingly works on it so much and goess without sleep for so long, he loses his mind, creates a glitch that kills people, and stands his ground to the point of going in himself as well, mostly to escape police, but also because way too many people died for him to just write it off as a mistake and tried to help. Kirito taken aback that his image of Kayaba as a villain is shattered with him being no different than everyone else. Genuinely, as someone who used to be a fan of the original, Kayaba's logic baffled me, as opposed to the Abridged where it does a good job of explaining how the fuck we got here. stuff like this & more being added, changed & removed for the sake of the abridged story is exactly what has genuinely made me excited to see SAO Again. because after all of this, i can definitely tell Something Witty knows exactly what works, what can work, and what doesn't work with Reki Kawahara's writing & the anime, and either cuts it out entirely, changes the context, or rearranges it in a way that the moments can work. like how Kayaba's reveal in this is done through bonding with Kirito about "being a genius in a world that just can't keep up with you", and willing to have a rematch with Kirito. but only after he's annoyed to the point of wanting to kill him, instead of essentially just cutting out everything else in SAO because you wanted to give the main character a chance to beat you. and it just gets better with them giving the same kind of treatment to the dumpster fire of an excuse for a continuation to the story that is regarded as the Alfheim Arc. which a reminder: Marrying a Child Bride a middle aged man being disgusting towards a comatose patient a bunch of pointless detours intended for worldbuilding in contrast to the fact that Kirito had a deadline to meet turning Asuna into a damsel in distress and excuse for depraved fetishes having Kirito's cousin falling for him ripping off Guts & Griffith from berserk all of that is being either reworked, removed or changed around in the abridged currently.

They cemented it was better than the original on episode 4, IMHO. The first time they used the Saachi trauma in a way that actually made sense... I was sold. Everything after that is a gold mine. It's why, even though parts of episode 3 are very cringe to watch... I don't let anyone skip episode 3 when I show them the series. Saachi's death actually matters and actually comes up. It makes moments like when Asuna says "that dumb bitch Sally" later so much more gratifying because you actually understand his grief but also see why from the outside it wouldn't matter to Asuna

The Abridged series fixes the critical plot point of Season 1. The game creator’s original response was just “I can’t remember.” and said he was done. Then he secretly sent his admin key data to Kirito’s Nerve Gear. It made no rational sense, which is why I’m not surprised the rough draft of the manga was originally written when the author was a teenager. Clearly no one proofread their original story, glitches and bugs were made a constant issue in the Abridged series because there was no consistency for things.

I’m just saying a lot seem to think that she WANTS to justify her feelings for Kirito but no it’s the opposite, she KNOWS it’s wrong and wants to move past it and does so, that’s the opposite of incest. This arc can still be included even in a rewrite to improve upon it. A channel called CJ explains within the context of the novel, the cousins were forced to do kendo by their abusive grandfather, but Kirito wanted to quit was only able to when Leafa promised to work harder for the both of them, this meant she was unable to develop a proper social life. Things got when he started avoiding his cousin when he learned of their real relation which confused her. Years later, she also knowns the truth, then when he came back to try to make things right, this confused her further because she doesn’t what kind of relationship they’re supposed to have, but in the end she rejects any weird feelings towards him from the start like any sensible person would. The message is to talk things out from the start, not burry them and avoid others because there’s consequences for it. The channel also made a video on why SAO is NOT a harem series like everyone thinks.

@@wild4934 Also you don't die instantly when your avatar is killed. That's how the christmas item was able to resurrect someone. You die IRL after a few minutes. Kayaba could have easily plucked her out of the "people to die" list in that span of time.

17:53 One of the things I like most about SAO:A is how they changed Kirito figuring out Heathcliff is Kayaba. In the original anime, Kirito just kinda figures it out based on "there's no way he could beat me without cheating". In this, he recognizes the pattern of constant movie references, and with that last bit, puts it all together.

The implication of that "after death lobby" is kinda f***ed up. Remember, there were people who unalived themselves in SAO. Imagine doing that and then you get a 10min loading screen to overthink that decision without any way to change what happened.

My favourite bits about the end talk with Kayaba is the continuation from earlier. He said the tutorial npc vanished. That's because the black cats leader kidnapped him. And then the Reki comment. The idea that Reki worked at a game company and saw small tidbits and tried writing a story about gaming made me laugh a lot. Also the asking Asuna to not be able to kill herself was actually what he said in the show if memory serves.

I was also playing Zenith for quite a while. It was awesome, the gliding and climbing aspects were part of my favorite parts. And I had this one skill that let me just throw my sword and it blew up everything around it with lightning. It was pretty sweet.

2 things, 1. Taka nailed it as Kayaba and 2. You gotta give it to SWE, they took one of the worst things about SAO and made it better by actually making a reason for why he messed up. Can’t wait for the Alfheim arc which was aside from the incest, was not bad and since Taka did the main villain here, the main villain in that arc is played by another person from Team Four Star, KaiserNeko

I've played Zenith, and may go back to it again. While it still does have bits of unintuitive UI and the basic problem of needing more bandwidth than a conventional MMO because lag hurts your experience a lot more and there's more data that needs transferring (and I personally have some problems with its progressively less acrophobe-friendly design; I personally burned out when I hit a timed flight mission that requires carrying an item in hand - making my high lag prohibitive), the basic issue the game's faced is unchanged: the developers aren't finding ways to accept money from those players that want to give them more, and keep trying to reinvent the game in the hope of pulling in a greater crowd at the start. It's definitely better than any other VR MMO-ish game I've yet played, but it hasn't reached the sustainable point.

I get how you feel about the Zenith closure, Alicia. I was a player of the MMO Defiance (and was a fan of the show also). Even now, I and several players still miss Defiance in both it's MMO and show form.

Crazy part? Asuna's sword was just laying on the ground for Kirito to grab, even though all the other players' weapons vanished along with them when they died, so hers just stuck around for dramatic effect. Worse, they didn't even _need_ to do that, as Kirito and Asuna are married, and share inventory space, and items can be taken out by the living player if one dies, because there were two whole episodes devoted to that mechanic with the Grimlock and Giselda fiasco, so it COULD have been an interesting callback for him to suddenly equip Asuna's rapier out of nowhere, but nope, they just left it on the ground and never explained why it didn't vanish with the player.

Girl, there's something closer to Sao in vrchat, someone litterally made an mmo world based on sao that saves your game data across the servers. Unfortunately you can only play with specific avatars, but just the fact that it exists is exciting . Maybe not to zeniths level(as I didn't play it as both my vr is dying and pc is a potato)

I'm actually getting ready to read the light novels for this series. It'll take a while because there are over twenty of them. I really enjoy both the abridged and the actual series, so i wouldn't put one over the other in terms of which is better. Abridged is certainly funnier though. In regards to the actual show and the reasoning given,I think that's a result of the anime shuffling some dialogue around. In the light nove, this is what he says “Why, you ask? For a long time, even I had forgotten. Why did I do this? When I learned about the development of the full-dive system-in fact, long before that moment-I dreamed of creating that castle. Creating a world that surpassed all the rules and laws of reality. And finally…I even saw the laws of my own world eclipsed.” He turned the serene light of his eyes upon me, then back again. A slight gust picked up, rustling Kayaba’s lab coat and Asuna’s hair. The castle was more than half gone by now. Even memorable Algade had crumbled into nothingness, swallowed by the clouds. Kayaba continued. “Children experience a great variety of dreams and fantasies. At a young age, I was gripped with a vision of a castle of iron floating in the sky…Even after I grew older, that vision never left my mind. In fact, with every year the picture grew larger and more real. For years, my one and only desire was to leave the sur-face and travel to that castle. You see, Kirito, a part of me still be-lieves that castle really exists…in some world, somewhere…” So it's just been a dream of his to create his own world, and the development of the full-dive technology gave him the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of his.
