It doesn't make InReach useless, it's an alternate method. Iridium has a carrier grade network and insanely high availability. It's used as life safety communication all over the world because it really is that reliable. Cell coverage is decidedly NOT that reliable, especially if it's coming from a satellite. THis makes cell coverage an OPTION, but it's not a REPLACEMENT. Big difference, especially if you understand the technical differences between the networks.
@IdRatherBeHiking

One of the facebook groups I posted this video in has people talking about how they've had their inreach not properly connect a few times when they pushed the SOS button. Its quite possible once more satellites go up the general cell network will cover more area than iridium. For not obviously iridium and inreach is the option to go with.
@mausball
@mausball Жыл бұрын
@@IdRatherBeHiking That's an issue with the Garmin side, not Iridium's satellites. The Ir network is consistently shows to have better uptime and coverage than cellular. And Musk's backhaul technology is not set up to be 5 9's reliable like Iridium is. I'll trust Ir over t-mobile in space any day. I say that as an engineer who knows a lot about RF, satellite comms, and the cell network.

What do you mean? What is the difference between Iridium "zone", and starlink "cell", if they are both LEO and both cover (or would cover) 100% of the earth surface?

Until something is implemented and live for use it’s not replacing anything. It’s also technology, prone to glitching and failures. My inReach was invaluable on the Uinta Highline Trail this month! Proof is in the pudding and since this SpaceX thing isn’t even out of the box yet it’s a bit premature to say the inReach has no value.

There are some smartphones that are waterproof and somehow shock resistant, however most of them are not, while the inReach mini 2 is IPx7 certified. Furthermore the battery time of a modern smartphone without GPS tracking is already quite limited while using GPS tracking can increase the drain of energy significantly.

I guess it's bad news for Garmin and good news for those who can't afford them. I'd love to have one, but since my hikes right now aren't for extended periods in dead zones, and I'm on fairly well kept trails, I'd have to have a freak accident for it to pay for itself. But freak accidents do happen, so I figured I'd cross my fingers waiting on the technology to improve. Apparently that's happening.

I would still like a satellite communicator. That’s because I’m always taking my phone out and doing things with it, whether its taking a glance at the map, or taking a photo. That means there’s always a chance that it can be lost, broken, etc. I see a lot of hikers strap their sos device to their packs, I personally loop it to my belt loop and keep it in my pocket, as there are many emergency scenarios where you might get separated from your pack.
@IdRatherBeHiking
@IdRatherBeHiking Жыл бұрын
This is really smart and you are 100% right. I'm actually reworking where my gear goes with the inreach being one of them and bearspray needs to be accessible in 3 seconds that is the speed of a grizzly bear charge.
@mellowmoo6747
@mellowmoo6747 Жыл бұрын
@@IdRatherBeHiking luckily I don’t have to deal with grizzlies where I hike. I’ve been looking into missing hiker cases/deaths and it seems like falling and getting lost. So I’ve taken steps to make sure I stay hydrated. I feel like the only times I’ve slipped and fell anecdotally were when I was thirsty. Sometimes there is a safer route, and if something’s too challenging you should turn around. If you fall and sustain a head injury, your phone/communicator might not be able to save you. Many “gone without a trace” incidents, I often times the hikers packs are found. I’ve also seen forum posts of some hikers getting lost because they left their pack behind to use the restroom. So I was thinking of getting a chest/Fannypack so there were some essential items always on me, even when my pack is off, however I’m soooo guilty of leaving my phone in my shoulder strap when I take my pack off to eat.
@gordonroberts3770

That's good to hear about the cell tower. Inreach is around $400-450 those other ones like spot are cheaper but less reliable because they arent on Iridium. not sure i agree with this, too many unknowns at this time but i like the forward thinking. Annoying people will be able to bother me while im hiking, not sure how well i like that either haha Here's what i know: The garmin inreach works globally, literally anywhere you can see the sky highly including Antarctica, reliable also. The emergency satellite comm device in the iphone only supports global star which doesn't have global coverage unless apple plans to expand their coverage with starlink thru them also; if you are overseas or in middle of ocean you are sol relying on that. Iridium def does. also does that mean everyone has to switch to Tmobile? and will the satellite systems be overwhelmed when all the sudden thousands of people start using it, id bet there will be problems. I would also not expect the same transmitter in your cel phone to have a range that reaches satellites in outer space; its just not designed to do that because you'd have too much RF congestion if it were true, so you are looking at a phone upgrade at minimum to make it work. take Inreach just in case and plan on inreach being a thing for a few more years to come but i think eventually they'll get there. Starlink will be bad ass but present day, be careful which Sat network providers you choose to rely on, they are not all created equal and Iridium is hands down the best one.
