He wanted to make himself the Roger Goodell of the smash community. I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that he wanted to unify and legitimize the scene, but he did so in the worst way possible by trying to strong arm community leaders. He tried to "my way or the highway" everybody and they chose highway.

And the biggest mistake seems to be that his ego needs stroking and so he puts himself in the middle of the authority. It's pretty fitting that he wanted Panda as the arbiter of the competitive scene, then when everything went tits up, there's a double secret reason why Panda and Dr Alan are the villains and it has to do with multiple parties "endangering" Panda. Nothing says ego like saying your enemies are to blame for everything exclusively and that you have no reason to apologize.

I love Scar's view on it, which is that the Smash community doesn't need to reach out to Nintendo, and hopefully, Nintendo will ignore us. As soon as we try to get Nintendo's attention by reaching out for licensing or pushing for Nintendo to do something on our behalf, that attention turns into looking for any reason to shut down our events. Will they still try to shut things down when they're done low-key? Probably. But that's happened all along. I really don't see a way that Nintendo can/will prevent events from happening long-term. It always seems to be a quick termination followed by the Smash scene being off their radar for a bit. Maybe just pump the breaks on including the word "smash" in the branding, and the "brand-new" VGBC World Tour can operate like we've wanted it to all along. The only way to morally win in corporate America is to stop playing the corporate game.

My guess as to how Dr. Alan could frame it is that maybe Nintendo has been telling him all along that in the future, they would no longer allow unlicensed Smash events and he was just "warning" the other tournaments and BTS that it was going to happen in the future, and he was trying to shield them from that by legitimizing them through becoming part of the Panda cup. Maybe when he said "BTS is putting the community in jeopardy" he could say that "they didn't listen to me when I tried to warn them that Nintendo was going to try to shut them down," therefore jeopardizing the entire community by not listening to him. I think the angle for the SWT lying part is going to be that Nintendo didn't grant the license but they didn't shut the tournament down, maybe he'll even claim that they're shutting down the tournament of their own volition for some as-yet undisclosed reason. Of course, I don't know that any of this is the case, but if I were trying to craft a winning strategy for Dr. Alan, this is the angle I would take.

LD is the one who got me in to esports. I work in to Dota 2 scene and in my early years I leaked something huge. He's one of the people (there were a lot of other people that also gave me advice) that pulled me aside to make sure I never did something stupid like that again (I leaked a VERY LARGE organizations acquisition of a team and ruined their entire subsequent announcement). I highly doubt BTS is at fault here, as Alan says.

"He should be smart if he's a doctor" Ahhh the fallacy I learned the hard way with my own doctors. Smart, sure thing, gotta be, but not necessarily wise. Doing the right thing and knowing to do things are sadly two very distinct concepts. So many people I envy the smarts and knowledge and skill and experience, yet it often turns out they're not the wholly superior beings I thought them to be. And I think that's why: smarts & knowledge vs wisdom. Having the former in droves doesn't imply the same for the latter. It's a seemingly contradicting idea that someone who can understand very complex things can have such poor judgement in some situations, but that's just it, it treats to different types of thinking. It's a normal expectation to have, but it turns out very savant people can be just as flawed as anyone else in various aspects of life. Eagerly awaiting Dr. Alan's alleged receipts 🧐

"Panda has heard the concerns of the Smash community" and yet they act like they didn't hear them when it comes to Panda Cup being boycotted and that being the REAL reason they postponed the Panda Cup to try and win back their talent and community trust enough so that the finale doesn't bomb. "We call on the community ... to call out and report any attempts of doxing or harassment." Yeah that's what happened when Alan was harassing TOs and SWT as members of the community called out and reported that harassment, that was then corroborated by multiple TOs in the community. Then you as Panda downplayed it and called it a "miscommunication." Who is managing these PR statements because the lack of humility in them continues to grate on the community? Hence why they're making a follow up statement when their first one failed so hard.
