I started off my gardening journey in 2021 committed to growing some vegetables amongst my flowers in a kind of polyculture. However, after 2 years I realised that I want to support pollinators as much as possible and that's where I find real joy. I'd rather let vegetables go to seed than eat them! (Bees love broccoli and leek flowers!). It's ended up 90% flowers, a couple of fruit trees and some herbs- so I'm really excited to watch your journey :)

Your journey sounds oh so similar to mine - that's where my head is at with regard to pollinators, biodiversity, etc...

You really did enjoy that first guild garden in Kerry, and it sunk into your heart Niall. It's your garden and it's what you love, I know you will make a great success of it, because you did so far with last seasons ones that you did. Well done young man,as ling as you are happy in the garden,that's what matters. I can see you are very happy about this adventure. Whoohoo roll on your great fruit tree guilds. Your garden has brought you so many adventures, thanks for bringing us along with you.

@niallgardens sorry Niall,only getting back to you. My health hasn't been great for a long while, my immune system isn't great. Currently messaging you from my bed,only after moving from my couch. So not like me. Fingers xd after I shift this current illness,will get back gardening and swimming. Its the reason for my absence on lots of the great channels. I'm so happy that you are happy with what you are doing to the garden. Did, we know that time of your visit to Maijus garden that it would set deep in your mindset and heart.

Wow, so excited to follow this journey Niall. The part about learning your space really resonated with me. My garden is small and was dominated by an invasive rhododendron, a huge California lilac and a pretty bland cooking apple tree. I completely neglected the garden because I love those plants. It took me getting an allotment which was a real blank slate, one that allowed me to fail loads to give me the confidence to take on my own garden. I had to give up my allotment as I have a baby girl now but this year all those overbearing mature plants go and I get to bring my own spin on things and build something for (and with!) my daughter.

Great video - funnily enough I've been going through similar ruminations (leading to a slightly different action plan) although I think you've put it more coherently than I have.
@niallgardens10 ай бұрын
Thanks Alexandra! It had been playing on my mind last year and I'd been trying to figure out how to make the space something that I truly want rather than being something I'm telling myself I want
@jeffreyrossi508410 ай бұрын
Not surprised as it seems like a natural path for this space to take. It looks like it will give the feeling it was always that way with a little time. There are lots of herbs and veggies that will do well in the new environment, and it will become alive with all kinds of pollinators.
@niallgardens10 ай бұрын
That's exactly my thinking (and hoping!)... I think it could potentially create a great balance between productive and giving-back

Good luck with the project, Niall! Your thumbnail gave me a little shock --- glad to see theres still food but your decision makes a lot of sense. The finances of veg growing (mostly) works out if you grow high-value & organic crops and, even then, the time required to process it all so it isnt wasted.... Your foraging plan sounds like a more enjoyable and exciting use of space. Cant wait to see how it grows
@niallgardens10 ай бұрын
Thanks so much Alex! That's just it - unless we grow high value crops, and particularly in areas where food miles are so low, I think we really need to be looking at providing sustenance for the environment. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it comes together this year!

looking forward to hte next steps. We bought a house with room for a orchard last year and last year I started with some new fruit trees in the front garden, The problem we have is the grass, looks great because we let all kind of wild flowers grow but you have to mow now and again and that is a pain. You plan seems like a very good solution, Love your video's, thanks!!!

@malins457310 ай бұрын
I'll remember where I heard it first! I think you will start a concept here, I wouldn't want to call it trend. Many people will soon get tired of ordinary raised beds and want to mix them up. And if you in 20 years get tired of looking after this, as it may be labour intensive, you can turn the spot into an orchard, with all your favourite trees, at manageble sizes!
@katrin46210 ай бұрын
It seems to be a theme that started bubbling last year... I have a plum tree and 2 dwarf apple trees in buckets and they will go into my raised beds once I can dig into them properly this year. They will provide some structure. And more flowers!

Very interested in what you do here, because one job I have is teaching gardening (mainly vegetable) at a University, and the other is propagating native plants! I love veg, but no longer feel great about the biological desert many farms and gardens present for native wildlife. The next phase of both my outdoor classroom and personal garden is to create spaces that will combine edible and native components and hopefully nourish ALL of us!

Really looking forward to seeing the progress on this, you got me interested in the idea of fruit tree guilds when you started yours last year, I already have a number of fruit trees and have mostly kept the areas directly surrounding them clear for several years, but this is inspiring me to maybe clear slightly bigger areas of overgrowth and turn them into wildlife friendly guilds instead of fighting back brambles and bracken.

Like you, I do not need to grow large amounts of food and also I am elderly I cannot do a lot of digging. I love flowers and did grow a lot together with some veg. However as I was on an allotment I was at the mercy of the council team who disapproved of these as they were not 'show flowers'. My beautiful flowering perennials had to come out and I gave up that allotment which was so good for my physical and mental health. How shortsighted were those people, no regard for nature and the benefits of flowering plants.
