Dr. Sam Baron is a senior lecturer in philosophy at the University of Western Australia, and holds two grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) on time. Sam introduces both the physics and philosophies which underwrite the 'end of time.' The idea that time does not exist has startling complications... If time does not exist, then a range of everyday 'realities' seem to be meaningless; notions such as morality, agency, and causation. This is nonsense. Time is not a social construction, even if seconds and minutes are. Just as space is not a social construction even if meters are. An important distinction to remember in relativity is that time always passes at a constant rate relative to the observer, and, importantly, always in a "forward" direction. Your space traveler would see earth dwellers in fast forward and himself at normal speed, and earth dwellers would see the space traveler in slow motion and themselves at normal speed. Both of them would measure light at the same speed they always have. This is not to say that there isn't more to know about time, but a social construction? Please.

Here's another point of view. Time is a psychological object. These were first defined by Kurt Danziger, a researcher who opined that "broken legs" are not the same as "broken hearts." Yet, we study these two in the same way and more than occasionally, confuse ourselves by forgetting that there's a big difference. Is time real? My thinking is that time is a real psychological object. So are good/bad, uptown/downtown, war/peace, happiness/depression. He argued that you can tell a psychological object by the fact that its historical definition changes. 100 years ago, scientists were studying "melancholy." Today, the term is almost never used in a psychological context. But humans beings have not changed. However, a broken leg a million years ago remains that same today. This remarkable distinction between physical and psychological objects can clarify debates like these. (BTW, the invention of "digital objects" has transformed our world as well.)

We don't need Time to know we should feel bad about doing someone wrong. But we could just use the present moment to make the situation better instead of pretending what happened did not happen. The future is only the continuation of Now. I get high off of conversations like these. TIME... The illusion. (How I see it.) Imagine if we never slept. If we could just pull up a chair and watch, observe. Seeing the process of a person aging would be quite the experience.

This is what I always thought about time. It's just a way to measure progression and cycles of events. But then the theory of relatively, quantum physics etc. seemed to prove me wrong. Philosophically - or rather practically? - he makes interesting points. If you have a day full of activities the day seems to have been longer afterwards. Maybe we can make more time for ourselves by doing more stuff? If you live your life not doing much, isn't it like you've only had a short time on earth? Eventhough paradoxically (or is it?) at the moment not doing much, time seems to slow down, and while being busy time seems to fly.

Time is an illusion of measurements, ergo art. Creativity allows for the shared cognition of life's view of their realities. Then, nature vs. nurture (luckily now with AI!) can aid Earth's toxic imbalances (water & air micro cleansing with several strategic bio domes) from adding to further transformations that can cascade towards another epic natural cleansing (WaterWorld, anyone?). I see Time as one unit, a spiral understood by even the Tube worms.

Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut "Plot The story is told in a nonlinear order, and events become clear through flashbacks (or time travel experiences) from the unreliable narrator. He describes the stories of Billy Pilgrim, who believes he was held in an alien zoo and has experienced time travel." "Tralfamadorian philosophy... he narrator of the story explains that the Tralfamadorians see time all at once. This concept of time is best explained by the Tralfamadorians themselves, as they speak to Billy Pilgrim on the matter stating, "I am a Tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is."[21] After this particular conversation on seeing time, Billy makes the statement that this philosophy does not seem to evoke any sense of free will. To this, the Tralfamadorian reply that free will is a concept that, out of the "visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe" and "studied reports on one hundred more",[21] exists solely on Earth." Quotes from "wiki (slash) Slaughterhouse-Five"

To begin with, I have hayed watches and flocks as long as I can remember. They have restrected my life enormously. In my mind, my "time" is what I do when I do it. I love from an event to event, but not by the clock. I have always been an oddball, a kind of freak. Still, with all that, I went to school, studies in the university and got my degree. With no watch. With no time, just a series of events following each other in a smooth path. As I grow older, time jaa lost its meaning completely. I am my own mistress to do what I want when I want, no time needed. I think Einstein has some ois idea of time being just a fraction of factors in the Universe and in ota movements. I have created me a space where there is no time, no day or night, nothing that must be done at exact moments. Any action without time still causes a reaction that can have far-fetching impact in the Universe. Time is manmade. As se dare to step into these new concepts, it behind to make a lot of sence. There are many tries who have no concept of time other than the sunrise and sunset. Everything between is not determined by hours and minutes and seconda, but by how much got done. That is my kind of timelessness. I get things done, or not, but there will be a new day to get things sorted. I am very happy in my timeless bubble, and even I get lost in it with pleasure, a real treat. To me time is just one component in the spaces structures, but not in the sense we understand t. There is the great timelessness, also referred afterlife by some, a place standing still providing our souls to have a relief period every now and then. There are still some details I have to think over, but time is only a globule of things in the big scheme of things. I have noticed that there are moments that time does stand still. I have had those experiences. And a lot happens in that spot without seconds ticking away. It is an awesome state of being, a lot happens in my space within a few moments, and the pollution time reåremand me of being lady and unproductive. That is so far from the truth. Time, as I sen it, is just one part of the Universe works, but people had taken time (and money) as their leaders and they are in trouble with their waelth. Time is their mantra. Time goes fast and a lot has to be devided between issues. First let the issues simmer a while and then start to see, what time really is or isn't. Einstein's tekes sense to me completely. Even though the are so things undeniable need of testing. I think the abstract of time is waste of though, hunters and fishermen do wake early to get in the proper mind art. There is a lot to learn about time, even humans have their inner core.

@archenema6792
@archenema6792 5 жыл бұрын
Time IS merely a measure of change. But this has not addressed the issue of the ontological state of the universe "prior" to remembered changes. Discounting the possibility of the existence of the universe in "anticipated" changed states, it makes no sense to describe the remembered states without reference to a conceptual framework of the "past". This creates an obvious tautology: we cannot arrive at a conclusion about these remembered states without slipping in some surreptitious reference to time, either as past states or as prior-but-now-obliterated states or whatever. We can't describe how the change constitutes a transition from one state to another without using time-laden terminology. Just sayin...

Terrible presentation of time here although there are some good points Dr. Barron makes. We are each a unique path of time. Why a unique path? Because we are free to roam (have our way or "path") and have our being (life) and think for ourselves about (truth) in ALL things created or previously existing before human record. At 1:39 he mentions "each event is living in its own little universe" "The universe is fragmented into pieces and each piece lives on its own" Are we not each an "event" living on our own having our being and with our own free will with the construct of "time" in all its forms to use (employ) to help in making decisions and help keep order in our own lives as well as to assist in helping others?

@@manujohn99 You are spot on Manu except for "time doesn't need to dictate how we live it". It actually does force you to think about how you are spending your time especially in the fast-paced world of America. We know the average life span is upwards of 70. Knowing this, in essence, draws out a boundary or limit of the possibilities one person can do. So in this sense this expectation or time constraint does indeed dictate your life to one extent. But I think what you are trying to say is that time does not dictate the quality of your life. I would also like to point out that what you reminded me of in the whole of your comment is why the reason Jesus Christ is "said to be" (actually declared) the Truth, The Way and The Life and I know that this is so because this is the life of Love. It recognizes that human life in the flesh is extremely short as folks approach their senior years and feel the effects of aging and we have heard it so many times from them that we know see our youth repeating and reminding us of it also. Luckily for our youth today, there is overwhelming conviction of what a good, quality life looks like but many have yet to discover The Way.

I believe he is close but not quite there. It seems to me that time is an emergent property of mass and change.The notion of emergent functions or properties is not entirely wel understood. But a common recent example is that of mind from brain. Mind does not exist without a working brain (sofar as I know). In the same way, time makes no sense without something changing. The social construct that we live by is the units of measurement used. Currently it is primarily seconds, minutes and hours. But those are relatively recent creations, and even now are not universally used Until recently (in the human timeline) we had no fundamental, objective basis for any of this. Now we use an atomic clock. But that is only convention too A sidereal based year and lunar based month could provide a universal experience. But theyt are not generally used, leading to multiple systems for both, and confusion. There are other significant units. Some are beyond our experience directly. Others are almost too long to experience but we do because of secondary impact. Seasons determine climate and crops so we have many elaborate ways to mark them. Cycles of our sun around the galaxy may have significnase when we pass throught the galactic plane and experience disruption of Oort cloud bodies that result in extinctions. Perhaps there are cultural cycles with their own scales like the rise and fall of countries and religions. DI don't think the distinction I'm making affects his conclusions in a significant way. Does that mean they are constructs too? lol

If you are asking about real reality then real reality does not exist because real reality wouldn't have time in it, which means, if time did not exist.........we do not too........means we go with the time........anywhere time goes.....we go. I did not understand anything about your science explanation

Ok, but your lecture is entirely based on the assumption that the hole universe is going to crunch at some point in "time" putting an end on it, but I don't think this is the most accepted hipotheses in phisics nowadays, so you cannot treat time as if it was an object with measures, begining and end, and I think the concept of a begining is also not fully understood, since that based on the theory, the big bang is not te begining of everything, but the begining of the/this universe

- I'm tantalized, and very keen to understand, but I'm still confused. Please help me (and probably thousands of other viewers) figure this out... ◘ Give me three specific, practical daily-life examples that, with 12-year-old simplicity, illustrate how we could behave differently because of watching this video. ◘ By simple, I don't mean 'theory' and 'principle'. I mean practical talk about specific home activities, work activities, relationships, earning ability. Ordinary things.

Time does exist and it always did. Genesis the first chapter of the word says " And God made the two great lights-the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night-and the stars." as you can see in the verse ,which by the way was the first week of creation, God made Night and day. And that's" time" simplified. Now the hours and minutes it's all manmande. But it's that simple. Bible is the greatest book , it's the living book. Thats y I love it. You atheist gonna hate that idc
@aabandreea
@aabandreea 5 жыл бұрын
uhm no, it says that god made the planets. the night and day are just results of this process. but when the bible was written, they didn't know about planets or stars - such as the sun - and so, they couldn't explain it like that
@waltwilliams1997
@waltwilliams1997 5 жыл бұрын
@@aabandreea hush! The scripture is right in your face quoted jus read . It said "TWO GREAT LIGHTS" last time I checked there are way more than 2 planets. this scripture is referring to the sun and the moon obviously. Not the planets. But there are other scriptures where they are mentioned . Thank u
@aabandreea
@aabandreea 5 жыл бұрын
@@waltwilliams1997 Yes, sure. In this scripture of yours it is said that he created "the lesser light to rule the night", which is false information. The moon does NOT produce light, but merely reflects the sun's light. It's called science. Search it up, you might find that you lived in lies your whole life.
@waltwilliams1997
@waltwilliams1997 5 жыл бұрын
@@aabandreea the moon does produce light !!! I even use the light from the moon to see when it's pitch dark outside when I'm camoing. The moon abosolutely produces a lesser light! And second of all nothing in the Bible is false information. Science is lies! That's why so many atheist like you connect with it . Every creation has a creator remember that. I'm not going back and forth with an atheist it's pointless . Have a good day. " The moon doesn't produce light" got to be kidding

Genesis 1 verse 14 says 'they will serve as signs for seasons and for days and years' that sounds like time to me, it's how the first calendars came about. Time exists in the physical plane.
