Because at the end of the first game, there's a slight hint that Below Zero was going to happen because Riley (the first game's protagonist) looked at the arctic as he flew around the planet right before that psychedelic animation happened.

The exact same thing happened to me with my prawn suit in the beta - I was in the cutscene, heard a distant explosion, then realized my mech was gone... I'm glad you found the same solution I did, though swimming past shadow leviathans while running out of oxygen has to be one of the most terrifying things I've ever done in a game. That was also one of the only times I sent feedback to the developers, it's sad they didn't change anything though. I was hoping they would let the mech into the facility so it would be better protected.

I think rather than doing either Sam's or Al's story, they should of been tied together. Sam disappeared while trying to find Al, you find Al while trying to find her, and you can have Alterra be involved and have to help Mada sabotage them so they don't find Al and his equipment. Hell add in physical effects to the world that makes your life easier for helping Mada. All three stories aimed torwards one conclusion. And some one else mentioned Mada was supposed to fight alterra in the ending, that would of helped her tie into the main story even more.

17:10 Going back and watching that questline wrap up. Your character literally does this narration speech explaining why she considers this to be meaningful to her. Like she's literally trying to explain to the player that it's actually a good ending to the plotline and not anti-climactic. The other part of this plotline "How did my sister die" starts with a letter saying "Yeah, she died in an accident" and ends with the grand discovery that "she died in an accident" Your character, when discovering the necklace and that it was a cave in, even says something akin to "surely that can't be how she died" and it's left like that as if you'll discover that something else caused her death

Well, it's not 'just an accident' per se. Sam tried to sabotage Alterra's access to the cave and ended up martyring herself for her cause, so it is sort of poetic.

If we'd actually gotten to see what happened to everyone or talk to them it would have lost a ton of its atmosphere and just been poorly-acted cutscenes like every other game can do.

Honestly, I'm in agreement with Luncheon and Zero both, here. In any good story, the general rule is "show, don't tell," because it more often than not detracts from the quality of the story to have the reader spoon-fed every detail without letting them figure things out for themselves. It's like when stories do the, "little did they know" thing, whatever suspense they're trying to build is immediately thrown out the window by the needless heads up that something is about to happen. Or when you're told outright who the villain is, and then you're expected to keep pretending it's all a big mystery while the heroes are stumbling around in the dark trying to piece together a puzzle you've just had solved for you. It just doesn't work. But on the other hand, I feel like there are times where you can show _too much._ Just like it detracts from the imagination's stimulation to be told everything, you can also kill the buzz by showing everything. Sometimes, it's better to not show what happened, and let people come to their own conclusions with the context clues they have. We really didn't need to see Maida in the flesh at all, outside of a bio image of her face in the PDA, maybe. Her story in the first game was about how she was a mercenary hired by a doomed expedition, and due to the then untamed virus in the water, she, along with said expedition, became infected. It didn't go into whether she survived or not, and left it to the players to determine for themselves whether she made it or not - which, again, given that the enzyme didn't start populating in the water until after we beat the first game, it was highly unlikely. But, not impossible, which could be shown without having to see the woman herself by simply her audio logs that detail how she survived, and, yeah, her leftover base and all the fixings in it, both of which would inform the players that Maida is a tough old bitch and managed to beat the virus on her own terms, in spite of how deadly it, and the world around her, is. And the fact that she left stuff behind, but was not there, herself, could once again have been left to player interpretation: Did she get too comfortable and cocky and perhaps meet her match against a bigger, more pissed off leviathan? Maybe the Shadow Leviathan who got made hyper lethal in the full release? Thing's already terrifying, the idea that Maida got got by it would send an even stronger message to the player, "hey, you know the crazy old gal who beat a Reaper to death? She got eaten by this thing. Maybe try and avoid it, rather than fighting." Or maybe Maida managed to make her way off world? She's resourceful, and she's still alive after the security guns were disabled, so she could probably have rigged up a radio to signal for pickup like the first game's protagonist tried to do, but successful, this time. And as for Maida being how Robin finds the cure, maybe that could've been another angle - maybe she succeeded in helping Sam find and make a cure, but she wound up meeting the same fate as Sam and Parvan (which, Seth was half-right twice: Parvan found out Sam was up to something and tried to stop her, Sam set off an explosion that caused a cave in and killed them both. This works great for Maida, the mercenary for hire, as she and Parvan could've gotten into it with one another and Sam could've set off the explosion in a moment of hastiness and ended all three of them while still keeping that plot thread intact, though I agree with Seth that what we got was a crock and deserved much more work than it received), so the only way we can find it is by piecing together where it's hidden from audio log conversations between the two? Instead, we just see Maida doing fuck-all in her cozy little hidey hole. Everybody she had any reason to care about is dead, so she decides to just... hang out. You'd think a woman of action would be more inclined to _take action_ now that she's not being held down by any outstanding obligations, but I guess not. I dunno, maybe I'm nuts and all this is nonsensical crap I pulled out of my ass. So, to summarize: Tell, Don't Show is bad, except for the rare instances where Show, Don't Tell shows too much and doesn't tell enough.

My opinion of Below Zero: So first of all the good things, the Ending was fantastic and I'd love to see another entry exploring the architects homeworld. The new biomes are beautiful and the atmosphere was excellent most of the time. Now onto the less great things, the world itself was confusing to explore with most locations being so hidden away that without guidance of AL-AN I would've never found them in the first place, the world itself feels quite empty and sterile as if there wasn't enough time to dedicate to a living breathing world. The game is riddled with gamebreaking bugs and loading issues, unoptimized and laggy in the weirdest places. 6/10 Buy on a sale, Unknown worlds needs to take more time to debug and invest heavier into quality assurance.

I never even found the frozen leviathan or sams base in my first playthrough, I havent found sams base even now in my third playthrough. Though I did find the frozen leviathan in the first one only just before the ending, cause I thought "Oh yeah wait.. the trailer had a huge frozen creature, let me look that up." Then was let down when I found it. Which also means I have still never cured the leviathan

The first story was discarded because the ending was leaked. The ending of the first story was more epic. When Al-an and Sam try to leave they are stopped by an Alterra batleship, but then comes our baddass friend Marguerit in her prawn suit to fight the ship and give you time to escape trough the warp gate, is unclear if Marguerit died there or not, but that final gave more use to Marguerit. That final could still be used if they made Alterra notice Sam's activity in the planet and sending troops to stop her.

My main issue with sub zero is that you can miss too much, in subnautica we had a very simple system, go a bit deeper, obtain material to go deeper, learn a bit, repeat till the end, theres a ''depth'' progression, in sub zero everything ''feels'' at the same depth lvl, so u can legit miss things, like the kharaa cure, i legit didnt heal it, i found the frozen leviathan and everything but i just didnt found the cure so i didnt went back to administrate it, i just made al-an and left but during the end speech i was like ''but i dint?'' coz i didnt solve sam's storyline, i was just like.....Ok.

I wish this game could have been the amazing sequal to subnautica that everybody wanted, and even though it was still great, it kinda came out wonky. I hope that the devs aren't done with this world yet though, as these games are just so great at what they do. I came here to mention the map too. The lack of a direct reason to come here is painted as a negative, but I actually like that the game doesn't hold your hand everywhere. This rewards players that are naturally curious and want to investigate. I visited outpost zero early in the game because it was on the map and had the zero designation, not because the game told me to go there. That made discovering it that much more rewarding.

Yes, all the Alterra stations are in the map and outpost zero and omega lab which Seth also didn't find are mentioned in multiple voice logs and, in case of omega lab in lilypads, hinted at by the pda mentioning a large rock mass separating and floating up. I found it by just circling in and out of the lilypad caves in search of parts to scan. the first log you probably listen to, the one from lillian, also tells you immediately about outpost zero. it lets you know things are out there, just doesn't give you a beacon to them, so you can explore and use the map

I adored below zero in some ways even more than the original game (even though I don't think it's technically better), probably because I went into it knowing way less than I did abt subnautica, and it won me over with its exploration model and beauty. (and i really love the seatruck, surprisingly! only wish you could put more stuff in the storage module, and maybe get a blank module to build some things in, a recyclotron and a single pot would solve all of my problems)

Genuinely surprised at how you don't have more subscribers and followers. The best comparison I can come up with is that this is like How to train your Dragon 2, its not bad, but it just failed in some key elements that stop it from re-capturing the magic of the original, here is to hoping that Subnautica 3 can re-capture some of the magic while also taking the story in a new, interesting direction, just like HTTYD 3 did.

I really enjoyed this series, as well as your last one covering the first Subnautica! I'm so glad to have found you through your love-letter video essay to the series. I definitely have to agree with your wrap up thoughts though, i love subnautica: BZ but it is definitely riddled with flaws from what we've seen here. Its a shame the story got tugged around so much plot wise because like you said, both Sam and AL-AN's plots are fun and interesting but they're different stories shoved into one and don't support each other. Anyways, thank you for this fun series, I think we're all excited to see the dark souls content when that comes out!

At least you weren't playing the Switch version. Because they only recently dropped a hotfix for the end glitch. Except, instead of just a few pieces and the portal not loading in... It just loads an empty cave. No AL-AN, no machinery, nothing.

I'm late to comment but here are my thoughts on the Sam/Kharaa storyline: It has so very many plot holes. It doesn't really make sense either. Like, the idea is great. They find a Leviathan by chance that happens to still be infected because it hasn't been able to swim around in the water that now has the cure floating around in it. Big evil cooperation does risky tests to exploit this extremely dangerous bacterium because money. One of the employees thinks it's concerning. Said employee dies in an "accident" after voicing her concerns to several people. Up until this point. Awesome set up. A lot of potential. But then. Turns out the Leviathan can be cured easily despite being frozen. I'm no biologist but... for this to work wouldn't the enzyme have to move through its blood stream? Which... it can't because there's no blood flowing through it and it's most likely dead anyway. But you inject it with the enzyme and it instantly cures it despite having no ways of moving the cure through its /massive/ body. Sam is described as very buttoned up and loyal to Alterra but this situation gets her so paranoid that she is willing to blow things up? Why didn't she just secretly inject the cure while no one was looking? Why was that plan B? That seems like it should be plan A. Yet plan A was blowing the place up. Which would have only slowed things down anyway. The bacteria is still there. And they have the machinery to just get in there again since they know exactly where the Leviathan is located. Evidently, this was way too dangerous since she ended up killing herself /and/ someone else. A very out of character thing for her to do. I also don't understand the point of her potential love storyline. Feels like a lot was removed there. Also... where is everyone? As far as I know only Sam and Parvan died. Lil seems to have returned to Earth but she was already shoved aside anyway so it makes sense for her to have left. But what about everyone else? Did they die too? How? How come no one came if they died to continue the research? They saw such great potential in this find yet they just let the Leviathan... be? Dug up, easily accessible for other lifeforms while it's covered in a deadly and highly infections disease? Uhhhh??

Well… that was an adventure and to be honest your game was so much more laggier! For my time playing I experienced no bugs and the ice worm was encounter was terrifying beyond reckoning! Anyways, great series and holy f*ck! Why are you so good at being entertaining?!

Fun fact, the swimming in your seatruck glitch happened many times to me in subnautica below zero, and I got the seatruck depth module the first few hours I was playing the game, quite hard tho, also btw, I think you have to go to the red crystal cavern place for the fabrication facility, and there's two of them there

to be fair seth, they are likely using lithium or whatever batteries in the future so the pod still burning wouldnt surprise me in the slightest even after several days or weeks depending on the size of the batteries

Pro tip if you don’t know if you are wanting to go and swim for more than 75 secs with a standard tank grab two and have both filled with air and when one runs out switch to the other one. Trust me it works in below zero and probably in Subnautica

I loved the original, with Robyn hiding Al-An from alive, semi-ally, semi-hostile company and sister. The sub story of Robyn balancing her career progression with her sister who doesn’t care - and could wreck it for her - was interesting to me. A real shame.

.....Seth, Outpost Zero was I think the second place I found. There's a map of the facility you can scan somewhere, I think Outpost Delta, and it shows the locations of the various bases on it. One of the starter transmissions, the one from Lillian, says that Sam was stationed at Outpost Zero, so I went and checked it out.

Idk why he keeps saying the ice worm is buggy. I had no problem getting away from it on the snow fox. Just either keep boosting so it never catches up or see if you can time the boost when you hear the crumbling sound. Even if it knocks you off just get back on and get away, I don't see what's so wrong with that

The original early access story had more potential. In the original the Altera corruption began unfolding as you progressed putting you and your sister in danger as you were left behind and separated from your sister. There was an outbreak on the space station where your sister was posted and you had to stop Altera from discovering Al-An while trying to save your sister in orbit from the ground. There was more character dynamic between major characters because you didn't know who to trust but also didn't want to keep secrets.

i cant believe how they mishandled this, theres many points where i just laughed out loud at the hilariously bad storytelling. it seems like they fired all the good devs from the first game, and only kept the designers, because the game looked great

I could have sworn I commented sooner, I myself had the same thing happen with the prawnsuit and getting back. I almost died to 3 shadow leviathans, but my seatruck was actually on the surface above the cave which allows you to get down to the entrance to the crystal caves. So how did I get back? Well I am a weirdo who carries an extra O2 tank, so I had a ton of oxygen. But with almost dying three times.. it almost wasnt enough. And I thought I was going to die, without dying once prior. But I didn't, it turns out I took a wrong turn. And ended up at Marguerites base! And I survived. I refilled my tanks, and made it back to the surface. Also with very low HP because I ran out of medkits from the last shadow leviathan. But against every other thing that could kill me with the rest of the way back to the truck, I had actually completely gotten back. And beaten the game, and I am forever proud of that.
