The International Union for Conservation of Nature has placed the Monarch Butterfly on its endangered species list. In this video I review the biology and life cycle of "Danaus plexippus" it the worlds most amazing insect migratrion. I explain the life cycle from, egg, to larva, (including 5 instars) chrysalis, and adult. I explain how to distinguish male and female adult butterflies. I encourage planting milkweed and butterfly gardens, and learning more about the butterfly as a beginning to what you can do to help save this species.

Hi and thanks Frank! If anyone reading this, do watch "Flight of the Monarch Butterfly" if you haven't seen. I read and to no surprise unfortunately, Monarchs have plummeted by 80% in the past 20 yrs. Now fortunately, I have seen more Monarchs this yr in my yard in IL, as my Mothers has hers in hers in NE! 🙌

Frank, I do hope this new designation will help our efforts to provide more habitats. We released 276 in June but have only seen a few Monarchs since that time and hope it’s not too late in the season to see their return. We have 40 common Milkweed at full maturity ready for eggs. Our tags arrived last week so, we’re ready for them.

Thanks, as always, for sharing this with us. Their life cycle process is really fascinating. Very sad to hear that they are endangered, but thanks for providing resources on how we can help. I get nostalgic seeing these guys. I remember when I was a kid my sister called milkweed “butterfly bushes”.

Yesterday we were glad to see a monarch at the Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure, NC. Back in Greenville, SC one of my neighbors has started planting milkweed in a eroded area. 🦋

This was very interesting Mr. Taylor. In my opinion, you have one of the best channels on KZbin. I live in Canada, just across the North Dakota border. We used to see more Monarchs in past years. Have only seen a couple this year. I would love to plant some Milkweed to aid the ones coming thru our area.

Thank you for such an informative video. I'm in southern Ontario Canada and built a rain garden last year. I planted nothing but native plants including Swamp Milkweed, Joe Pye Weed, Blue Lobelia, Cardinal Flowers, Monkey Flowers and Black Eyed Susans. My plants are huge this year LOL. I'm hoping my garden will be seen by Monarchs and pollinators as a safe place to visit. Apparently Cardinal Flowers are favourites of humming birds, I'd be on cloud 9 to see a humming bird in my garden. Thanks again, new sub here,
