I'll copy and paste my below comment from his previous video. I've said this before over the years. What makes this chess channel great is each game is told as a story, without giving away the ending. Great clear concise pace, with dry humor added in from time to time. The explanations of the game and possible variations, again well done. I'm sure he can even make the snoozefest games exciting if he chooses. I've watched this channel grow over time and after watching his first monotone drab chess video. I wonder if he imagined he would become the number one chess story teller in the world. I have a question for anyone that sees this, does bishop g5 or knight g5 work at 4:26? The threat is Qh7, Kf8 and Qh8 with forced checkmate if black takes the knight or bishop on g5 with the pawn.

That accessibility can be more valuable than a deep analysis. In other words, he's the sort of person you'd like to chat with about chess in the bar and the library. ;)

If you want deep analysis go somewhere else! I also enjoy deep analyses on other channels. Ben Finegold for example. I have gained an amazing amount of new insights there (in spite of his continuously flying of the tangent... ) but for just to sit back and relax as a connoisseur this channel is just perfect. It always hurt when someone new breaks existing world champions' winning streak. Same thing holds for Garry kasparov in 2000, Vishwanath Anand in 2013 and Now Magnus Carlsen. Current world campions are always favourites of the tournament and so was Magnus. Today Poland will be happy.

I think Poles and Russians were preparing very good for this tournament. It wasn't easy for Magnus to beat Wojtaszek and especially Esipenko and he finally faded against strong pressure applied by Duda. The second half of the tournament was simply dominated by Russians.

This is the type of game that I'll play every so often, where I don't make any big mistakes throughout the game, but I just get slowly outplayed and squeezed by my opponent. Those can be some of the most painful games, just knowing you're worse for the entire game because your opponent has just steadily outplayed you.

Even worse is what I experienced once: getting squeezed into a lost position and then for the next 30 moves my opponent failed to find many game ending moves, but never quite giving up the won position. Carlson set many traps for Duda but he did not fall for them.

Yep. I’m an 1100, and I’ve played games with 80 accuracy so ik I played a solid game, but my opponent just doesn’t make a mistake all game and slowly wins.

Well he is human after all! We are very surprised indeed but it is not right as he played spectacularly and is holding form always. Just for comparison look at any other sport/game whatever, the world champion is not held as much of a god figure as we do in chess. Kudos to Duda still for this incredible feat.

@5:40 after Qe2 Bh6 Rc2 Rxc2 there is also a possibility to play Be3 since Qxe3 is not possible. there is no need to give up N and B in this spot for white. the problem is that Nb5 is coming and a3 will drop shortly after which white's position collapses.

Thought Carlson was brilliant in this tournament , so many times he went off course away from the main lines and still managed to push and in most cases beat all these top players … it’s not that he didn’t take it seriously but pretty sure he’s keeping his powder dry for the big title , this is where you’ll see everything he’s got

12:34 is winning for white. f7 pawn moves two fields, white pawn can take en passant and you can't stop it from becoming a queen because bishop covers e7

I think it was a strategic mistake for Carlsen to exchange light squared bishops and then allow a transposition to the French.
