He went into really deep and time consuming thinks to bend a small disadvantage into a winning position while Fedoseef tried to move fast to keep time advantage. When they had reached move 40, Magnus had nearly used all of his time. But then they gained addititional time and after considering the situation, it was at that point Fedoseef resigned. It's interesting how in the post-analysis it seems so clear that black was dominant, but watching the coverage live it was not clear at all for quite a few moves after the rook sac. Carlsen was behind on the clock and the eval bar was showing white as favourite. In commentary Naroditsky and Hou Yifan said the eval was probably wrong and Carlsen had compensation for the sac, but they weren't very confident in their assessment and struggled to find how Carlsen would convert his activity advantage. Watching the post-analysis is great but watching in real-time gave me a lot of appreciation for Carlsen's ability to find the win over the board as the GMs in commentary struggled to find it even with engine assistance.

Zugzwang is a German word which basically means, "It is your turn to move, and all of your moves are bad!" There is no "pass" or "skip a move" in chess, so sometimes having to move can lose the game! Zugzwang is a German word which translates to "compulsion to move."

Agad, you missed an opportunity to name this video The Zig Zag Zugzwang!
@kellamyoshikage2863 жыл бұрын
I disagree with this use of "zugzwang" as a word. In my eyes, zugzwang specifically refers to when one player is worse specifically because they cannot pass the move, and being able to pass would make the position equal, such as in winning king and pawn endgames where opposition is critical. In all of these positions, white wouldn't have been saved by passing a move, because black could always make progress no matter what white did, without relying on white hurting itself. 9:04 Nd3 is beautiful, but even if white could pass Qc1+ Ne1 would have won a piece anyways. One line I rather like at 9:04 is 1. ... Nd3 2. Nxf4 Qe1+ 3. Kg2 Nxf4+; if 4. Kg3 to attack the knight, Nxe2+ wins the queen, so after 4. Kh2 Qxe2 and white is just as moveless as before with one less piece.
