Gianni Schicchi is probably the best first opera a beginner could listen to.

I'm playing Rinuccio in this in a few months, so looking forward to this duet, it's amazing!

🎹 A glorious testament to Puccini and to Franco Alfano, the genius who completed the final fifteen minutes of this masterpiece. And to Lorin Maazel whose richly drawn out tempi revealed further treasures in this divine work.

I agree that gianni schichhi is well translatable to other piriods but it´s not the case with many of the operas you see staged in different times. All barroque operas are pretty well transposable but Donizetti´s, for example, tend to lose a lot when they try to make them say things that are not there byt transposing lucia into a contemporary setting, to cite one i´ve seen.

about staging, there is always the same problem: this is not the Florence of 13° century, costumes are pretty horrible, even Gianni Schicchi didn't follow Donatis to take back what thet stole... Less and less people go to see Opera also thanks to these geniuses that make everything differrent from what authors wrote...!!!!
