Also it was really cool that the end goal wasn't to kill it for being evil (though that could be an interpertation of why they wanted proof of it's existence) but just for the ambiguous end of needing footage for no explicit reason. It wasn't a battle to the death but more like a rodio wrangler which also adds to the whole ranch setting, quality writing. It was actually more or less coincidence that the explosion happened. Though a thought just came in to my head as to why they would need photographic evidence if all they needed to do was just take some rangers and survive an encounter with the alien for prolonged enough time to capture evidence in a way, which is feesable with enough understanding of it's behavioral patterns to survive an encounter, which could lead to a big news spreading from officer in rank to official and higher ups leading sending a special task to the ranch getting proper evidence. The edible hit hard while making this dude.

The horse OJ has at the beginning that he takes to sell to Jupe is Lucky. Spoilers to follow- Lucky doesn’t get sacrificed because Ghost is untamable and gets out of his pen on his own. So the night Lucky is supposed to be sacrificed, he got “lucky” because Ghost escaped and got snatched up. Same thing happens next time around, Emerald stole the horse statue from Jupe and his kids got revenge by letting Clover out, making Clover the next victim instead of Lucky. By this time, OJ has realized what Jupe is up to and goes back to get Lucky when the alien kills all the people at the show, leaving Lucky because he stayed in the cage. Lucky survives the entire movie and is the horse that OJ rides to capture evidence of the alien. I thought that was pretty neat and my favorite part of the whole movie.

The reason for the low attendance at the Star Lasso Experience was because it was the first time he invited an audience to the show, combined with the bad storm coming (reducing overall park attendance). I think the use of the name OJ was significant. In terms of how the media made such a spectacle of the OJ Simpson trial. The big connection that struck me as I left the theater was the use of balloons or inflatables. The balloons popping are what set off Gordie. They used an army of inflatable tube people to track Jean Jacket. The flags attached to the decoy horse are made of similar material. A giant balloon is what did Jean Jacket in and JJ itself was very reminiscent of a balloon (its digestive tract seemingly looking like similar material too). @jasonco22 жыл бұрын
Honestly, one of the most interesting thoughts I’ve had that I haven’t seen anyone else talk about, is that Jean Jacket may not be an alien. I mean, obviously we have no idea what it is and I understand that NOPE can mean Not Of Planet Earth; but there is nothing in the movie that tells us it is extraterrestrial. That particular fact is just an assumption that we, the audience, and the characters make. There is no actual evidence that JJ isn’t just some unknown thing that has hunted the skies of earth for 1000s of years, like an arial shark, prehistoric. Maybe JJ is one of many, an “angel”, an ancient creature that some ancient people might have confused for the divine and maybe even worshiped it or gave it sacrifices. Missing colonies? Could just have been a JJ. We know it needs to eat, and pretty regularly, which would be hard in space. So if anything, all evidence points to it being OF earth and not from space. Obviously the movie is framed as though JJ is an alien, but I just think it’s interesting that we never actually learn that. The movie lets us make that assumption ourselves, let’s us make up our own backstory and reasons for the strange spectacle before us.

@nightmarilyn2 жыл бұрын
I imagine the shrine itself was an elaborate coping mechanism. And after the incident, Hollywood probably made it the only thing Jupe would ever be known for. Every interviewer just wanting to bring up the incident, to the point where Jupe's only access to it is to reflect on it as someone who viewed the incident-not EXPERIENCED it. I think that's also why when Emerald asks for details, he can only bring up the SNL skit, because confronting the experience would be terrifying and traumatic-but accessing it as something that is a spectacle was 'digestible' for him. Maybe this is also what made Jupe so desperate for claiming the limelight again-in a way that would TRULY overpower his fame for the gordy's home incident. His ownership of the park is a nod to his first claim to fame, but it wasn't enough to stop people from remembering the Gordy incident. Perhaps he sees the UAP as his chance back to fame, without having to address his traumatic experience yet again.

Jup was a victim of the entertainment industry by virtue of being a child star and due to the "accident." The reality is the accident was the consequence of an industry indifferent to it's individual participants. The animal was trained but it had no ego compelling it to want fame and fortune while Jup did. Jup denies the tragedy of the event as he recounts it because he still wants to be where he was - living that dream. One of the differences between Haywood ranch and the Jupe's show was the attention and work that went into taking care of and paying attention to the needs of the animals. However, Otis Sr.'s fate remained the same despite his care and work ethic because he was just as caught up in the industry.

It's not just the film industry - it's the entertainment industry a whole. Music is incorporated, papparazzi, news, tabloids, talk shows, etc... you could even make a case for Jupe's carnival ground. The point is all of these are vehicles for the ego to reach american dream of a path to fame and fortune. THIS is JEAN JACKET. This is what we cannot look away from unless we make a conscious effort to do so. Even OJ wanted it if only to continue for the legacy of his father. The ensemble that decides to get the photo makes the decision that the reason they MUST get a photo of Jean Jacket is to expose it for the problem it is rather then a spectacle (which is also why the picture is left by the protagonist at the end - it's left to expose the problem and not used as an opportunity to take part in the cycle). Of course the film makers fatal flaw is getting the impossible shot - so his ego gives way to his greed to confront Jean Jacket gets him swallowed... the other characters remain steadfast in the mission. It even eats those that are mere spectators to the cycle. Another interesting symbol throughout the movie is the cowboy hat. The cowboy hat is a symbol of America... and fairly well associated with the coming of age of american cinema in particular. One particular scene filled with frightful tension strangely plays western music rather than stereotypical horror flick music. The business owners in the move wore cowboy hats including Otis and Jupe's wife (who passed the hat on to Jupe when he mistakenly believed he could tame the nature of the beast... A scene with Emerald in a decisive moment shows a cowboy hat hanging near her... The metaphor runs so deep and rich and to my mind can almost be interpreted as the "American Dream" in general with lots of examples evident but there is no doubt that entertainment is the primary analogue.
@noneoftheosrt2 жыл бұрын
I'd take it even a step further from the entertainment industry and say that it's the spectacle of our culture of overdocumentation; how many times have we heard stories of people sacrificing their lives for the sake of "that perfect shot"? Atop tall buildings, waterfalls, in front of dangerous animals etc. We're consumed by the need to document, because if not, did our experiences really exist? Someone else in these comments mentioned that they liked the fact that JJ felt very "local", and I think this is intentional. There is no survival instinct behind staying in town; OJ and Em could have easily Noped out and we wouldn't have a story. The entire plot hinges on their need to stay and document what they're seeing. We see this as well in the priorities of the dying TMZ man, obsessed with his canera till his dying breath, and Holst, who already had great footage of JJ, but needlessly sacrificed himself in order to climb a hill to get to the perfect vantage point. The climax/most suspenseful moment of the film all built up towards whether or not Em would be able to snap a shot of JJ using the only means of recording left. Oddly enough, this feels a lot like a harsh critique on Instagram culture/ the FOMO epidemic!
@papazero2 жыл бұрын
@@noneoftheosrt I wouldn't discount your assertion (it's all subjective fun) but I don't think it's the "need to document" so much as the compulsion for fame or to matter/feel important. JJ fed off those that compulsively wanted more than just documenting it's existence. This is established by virtue of the fact that the three main characters realize they must let the world know JJ exists as a problem and in the process - they have no interest in personally benefitting from that exchange for their own ego's sake. I used the entertainment industry because the movie uses it as the central conduit of motivation for all the the main characters. They're all hustlers in entertainment in some form or fashion but the survivors saw past their compulsion.

Sooo I gained a lot of insight from this review, but there is one thing that you never talked about that I have been wondering ever since seeing the movie. Why was Gordy such an important detail to the movie? Was he simply to show “animal” behavior in a sense? And I understand the balloons were setting off the monkey, but why did the ballooons keep popping all on their own when they were just floating there on set? Plus, isn’t it coincidental that balloons were setting off Gordy and a giant balloon is ultimately what “defeated” Jean Jacket? Lastly, why or how was the girl’s shoe standing perfectly upright during the monkey attack? It seemed like an obvious detail, but it was never extrapolated on further. Is it maybe just the director’s simple yet subtle way of saying the impossible is possible? Just some thoughts of mine I’d love to hear your thoughts on.

I’m pretty sure the shoe is reminiscent of a “bad miracle”, similar to what OJ briefly talks about in the film when talking about Jean Jacket. It’s amazing that the shoe is standing upright, but horrible that it’s happening amidst a chimpanzee going on a rampage. Similarly, it’s amazing that Aliens (Jean Jacket) are proven to exist, but at the same time it’s killing a huge amount of people. I guess it essentially boils down to the message of spectacles coming with a sacrifice.

Here's my reasoning for why the balloons were popping on the tv set: Stage lights get extremely hot. Balloons hung at various heights would pop when the gas inside them heats and expands or when the balloon material melts/burns. I think that's why the balloons were fine up until a point, then started to pop spontaneously around the same time.

This is a very great comment!! I asked the same thing over & over!! From the beginning of the film…to the middle…what is the significance of this damn-shoe standing perfectly upright in a vertical position with a seemingly interesting ZOOM-FOCUS from the camera!? And unless I missed something, if I recall right, the blood-drop stain the shoe when the scene proffered more detail with ‘Jupe’ under the table, was NOT there in the show at the very beginning of the movie
@jasonco22 жыл бұрын
My personal take for why all the Gordy stuff was included was to stress that this isn’t just some one off event, this cycle of abuse is a cycle that keeps on consuming more and more. Jupe suffered because people thought they could train a wild animal to create a spectacle. He carries that trauma his whole life, thinking himself above it, but only perpetuates it. His mistakes kill other people and create new traumatized survivors: our main characters. Let’s hope OJ and Em learn their lesson and don’t think themselves better than nature later in life. After all, they got their picture, their spectacle. Just like Jupe, they’ll profit off it no doubt. The cycle continues…

Yes!!! A follow up !! When I watch the movie based on the constant watching and the families role in the film industry I had a feeling it was some sort of commentary on that but this was great!! Helped me figure out what it could mean
@neon_shadow5572 жыл бұрын
I think you overlooked some things in your analysis. For one, the animal behavior. The shoe standing straight up during the chimpanzee attack to me signifies there was something supernatural going on. Then there’s the pray mantis that just so happens to cover the camera for the entire time the creature is in the sky, and only leaves after the ufo does. And then the film director who sacrificed himself - why would anyone do that? He wanted the shot, maybe, but the camera was destroyed along with him, so it was pointless. I think the creature could somehow control some animals’ behaviors. Otherwise the pray mantis scene is too coincidental. Just my take

Thing with the shoe was just dumb luck. If Jean Jacket could control animals the movie would’ve shown more of that. It was pretty obvious the balloons popping made the monkey react the way it did. Thematically it illustrates you can’t predict what a wild animal would do at any given moment we even see this when the mirror makes lucky lose its temper during the commercial shoot. The bit with praying mantis was just awful timing and bad luck.
@neon_shadow5572 жыл бұрын
@@quexllo there are a lot of examples of animals acting strangely around the UFO. You’re telling me the shoe was a coincidence? The pray mantis was a coincidence? The horses’ behavior was a coincidence? Check out Think Story’s video on Nope. He covers that aspect as well. This isn’t a crazy idea by any means, we’re literally talking about a science fiction movie where the alien can unfurl into a giant ribbon monster

The moral of the story that I got after the movie was, never try to tame a wild animal. They'll almost always turn against you!

There’s so many things in play I believe jean are jupe and everyone because jupe was abusing his so called relationship jupe was unknowingly feeding jean jacket thinking aliens were viewing us and jean jacket was because why else didn’t he eat jupe maby jupe didn’t make eye contact but I’m sure his curiosity he looked so it’s possible jean jacket was or had mutual respect But once jupe wanted to bring an audience and make a spectacle jean jacket was watching and came and ate em

Just came from watching the movie and I have to say that was an excellent analysis. I think there is something to be said about the form of Jean jacket at the end, almost angelic but not sure what it was … and what about that shoe standing upright?

I've seen the movie three times now and I'm 100% sure that OJ and Lucky died. There's a few clues that I didn't even pick up on until the third viewing that sealed it for me. With that said, I think Peele intentionally wrote and shot that ending so that it was ambiguous and it could be left up to the viewer to decide OJ's fate. Well, I've made my decision.

Ok. Here’s my thoughts 1.I don’t think jube did the show weekly I think he fed the alien weekly. But when he finally put on a show the alien attacked 2. The fake horse was at jubes park and Jj didn’t eat it, but ate it when it was at house. That was confusing to me. 3. I think nope is about GREED will eff you up every time….all the selfish money shot hungry killing innocent horses people died. I believed the alien was there for years and probably ate already dead things and was content. It only came out the recent 6 months and I think it’s because jube discovered it and fed it something better the live horse. And the alien kept coming back for it. So that’s why jube thought they was friends. Then when Jj got the fake horse he probably assume there was no more real ones and he was so Entitled and greedy he threw a tantrum and chewed up the people and spit them out! At the end he died from trying to do to the same tantrum. I also think the reason oj survived is because he was on the horse and the alien no longer wanted to eat horse due to the last one he ate being fake which is why when he chewed up the people he left the horse. 4. I think the balloons scared Gordy cause it sound like gun shots maybe hunters took him from his life in the wild and it snapped him back 5. I have no idea wassup with the shoe 6 what time period was they in?? The clothes and flip phone look early 2000 but I saw people using vapes and apple products 7. Also let animals be in their natural habitat.
