I thought it was an homage to 2001. Black monolith that stands straight up with the chimps.

The best interpretation I've seen of the shoe standing up is that the flashback sequence is actually a memory from the perspective of Ricky. The shoe was not actually standing up in the actual event, but Ricky's memory of the event is incorporating the image of the shoe on display from his collection. In short, the shoe is standing up in his memory of the event because of position he's displaying it in his collection, not the other way around.
@matthewsinger36282 жыл бұрын
Additionally, I'm sure there's deeper symbolism here in the imagery of the shoe, such as the reoccurring theme of exploitation for profit (in this case, specifically the exploitation of tragedy), but I don't believe the shoe standing on edge is supposed to be literal (i.e. some sort of supernatural force), but instead an image incorporated into a memory.
@aaronadams46572 жыл бұрын
I believe the shoe was a freak accident, a “bad miracle” like they say in the film. Similar to flipping a coin and how low the possibility is of it landing on the outside edge and standing up. Seeing the show like that distract jupe and doesn’t look Gordy in the eye triggering his aggression. The problem with that is he now possibly thinks he has a connection or ability to work with animals. He raises the stakes with the alien and working with his actual family, this time actually fucking around and finding out. There’s also the phrase “waiting for the other shoe to drop”. He’s been waiting for the other shoe to drop his whole life after surviving the Gordy incident. He literally still had the shoe and has it standing up the same way. The shoe finally drops as he gets wrecked by the monster, in search of trying to create spectacle

I think it’s important that OJ is nervous about making eye contact with the film crew at the beginning. He also views these directors/producers/writers as predators, the film industry as full of people that want to exploit their crew, exploit tragedy, and exploit animals.

"Don't feed the animals" These signs are at zoos and national parks because it can change the animals' behavior. Ricky was feeding Jean Jacket and that is why it was staying in the area. OJ and Emerald used a fake horse to try and get a picture. Jean Jacket was hurt by this so when Ricky tried to draw Jean Jacket out it attacks not the horse, but the people. Sharks have been known to do this. In the Red Sea people were hand feeding sharks for entertainment. When people showed up without food they attacked the people because they got used to being fed when they were around. We shouldn't mess with nature. We change its behavior. They all assume it was an alien space craft (so did we) but it was a natural creature and that was the mistake. I don't think it was alien. These creatures could be around but they stay hidden in the clouds. Jean Jacket changed its behavior because it was being fed. Don't feed the animals.

To me, I feel the shoe represented a presence of something supernatural right there in that moment. Jup felt that he had been saved by something in that moment considering most people were either killed or terribly injured. He thought that he had a special relationship with Gordy and in turn figured he’d test his luck with the UFO, fully expecting to be saved because he was in the past.

I like this interpretation because it explains why Jup was smiling once Jean Jacket began taking people. It threw me off when I watched it. He’s aware that it’s not going for Lucky but him and the audience and yet all he does is smile.

I think the shoe was floating because Jupe is recalling the incident and he has the shoe framed just like that in his room. He can’t even remember the position the shoe was in when he took it because he’s just become so accustomed to profiting off of it by showing it as if it’s an item in a museum. I think it's much deeper than profit, but you're on to something about him not remembering the position and it's like that due to the frame. "Waiting for the other shoe to drop". @curlyfried31172 жыл бұрын
@@jase276 Jupe is definitely traumatized but at the end of the day, it’s definitely about the profit for him. what Peele was trying to say is the fact that we as a society seem to be so desensitized to violence because those types of incidents fascinate us. Yes . There's a quote about a philosopher about how people choose to look at the spectacle instead of reality. There's a shot in the gordy scene where we the audience get to choose what to look at. The shoe upright center frame. Or the bloody chimpanzee looking and approaching us.
@einowski2 жыл бұрын
My interpretation is the shoe was a amazing lucky coincidence that Jupe interpreted as a sign he was "chosen" and special; when he's talking to himself at the beginning of the "family live show" he's says to himself he was chosen. Jupe didn't realize failing to make eye contact with gordie was the reason he survived, and this misunderstanding is why he believed he could tame Jean Jacket.
@josuepena2692 жыл бұрын
That picture in the well wasn't the only thing they got, though I can see how the movie left that impression. If you track the film cameras and their film canisters, the footage survives. They had two hand crank cameras. An imax one and the smaller one. When the cinematographer goes to get the impossible shot he takes the smaller one. And continues to film for as long as he physically can, knowing that the footage will survive. We later see the film canister of this smaller camera rolling down the hill. I imagine they'll eventually collect all the footage they got and release a documentary of sorts like the one the cinematographer was in the middle of cutting. The only thing I wish the movie would have done was have their footage playing during the credits or something. It would end with stop motion frame that the sister got from the well, reminiscent of the frames made to film her greatX 3 grandpa
@josuepena2692 жыл бұрын
"we don't deserve the impossible" doesn't mean he's going to destroy the footage ( he doesn't he leaves the imax camera which already captured oj wrangling jean jacket.) My take on the shoe after seeing Nope a 3rd time: Jupe has that shoe on display in his office, standing upright in a glass frame. I believe he is so used to staring at that shoe that his memory has been slightly altered. He probably remembers seeing the bloody shoe but its been 30 years, so his recollection is biased. After all, we see Jupes point of view from under the table, and the “actual” event shown through the TV camera lens.

Everyone seems to have missed the conversation on set being had about space travel, the Apollo astronaut portrait on set, and the fact that 40 chimps were trained (and 27 killed?) by NASA for space flight. There is certainly symbolism behind the standing shoe as a "bad miracle" and a "statistical anomaly", but the chimp species got their revenge in this case. These "sub-human" apes were abused, just like human slaves. It really was "one small step for man", but was it really "one giant leap for man kind"? It gets you thinking...an upright blood stained white and blue shoe.....red....white...and blue. Upright just like a docked Apollo rocket. Peele had great fun with this.

Keke Palmer says something along the lines of “I’m a singer, dancer and I make a really good grilled cheese, so if you need crafty, holla at me!” “Crafty” is like a department in the industry that’s there during the shooting and sometimes the rigging. My initial thought was that the shoe had something to do with ruby/golden slippers. There seem to be a number of references to Wizard of Oz throughout the film, from the broadcast interview where the woman talks about tapping her feet together, to the abduction shots resembling the twister, to Emerald’s name recalling the city. If that’s true, I’m not sure exactly what it means, although the ruby slippers in Oz did appear after a freak accident / miracle where something fell out of the sky and killed someone, and those shoes ended up saving the protagonist (both themes echoed in the events of Nope.) Wizard of Oz is also an interesting thematic reference since Nope deals a lot with film history (and its history of exploitation), and WoO apparently exploited its actors (teen Judy Garland apparently received adrenaline shots and barbiturates to help with the ridiculous hours, and the dog playing Toto was stepped on on set.)
@jamesparker80662 жыл бұрын
Bear with me here: I think the shoe is the entire driver of the plot post-Gordy. When Gordy spared Jupe's life, he wasn't able to explain it, but had to think he was special on some level, perhaps even more important than his co-stars. This is of course juxtaposed to the shoe, which is seemingly being "pulled into the sky" for no rational reason while all this is happening. Jupe creates a correlation between Gordy's outburst and this seemingly supernatural occurance, even if he can't explain it. Fast forward to when Jean Jacket takes his first horse and Jupe sees it. He's suddenly experiencing a similar phenomenon to what happened to the shoe. It's not a stretch of the imagination for Jupe to assume that this alien was the same force that acted on the shoe, perhaps compelled Gordy to become violent (consider the effect Jean Jacket has on the horses), and most importantly, spare his life because he is "special". We as the audience know that whatever acted on the shoe had nothing to do with Jean Jacket, but in Jupe's mind he has suddenly confronted his destiny of being the first person to build a relationship with an alien species. In his narrative, his entire life, and the reason he was spared, was all culminating with this encounter.

The industry changed to where its disrespect of animals meant they'd prefer to use CGI than live animals with trainers. Trainers are a dying breed, an archaic technology, just like OJ's phone. The way they made characters always come back to the alien was just stretched and didn't feel enjoyable to watch at all. I just think this could of been a "great" movie but ended up being "good". I'm just disappointed really, so much potential just to have a gimmicky plot about wanting to film it yet never actually trying to fucking film it. Like the electric cameras where literally useless by the end of the movie even if that was half of the movies initial plot. The tech guy confirmed even if something fried the camera's they where far enough apart for one of the 2 to be on that way one would alway be on. That rule was followed and one of the 2 cameras was always on even during alien appearances. Half way threw the movie when they ran out of stupid reasons for the camera not having picked up the alien apperance they said "fuck it" and decided that now when the alien came both cameras stopped working and they needed a mechanical camera. Like the rule of 1 of the 2 cameras was literally thrown out the window just to get an extra 30 min of screen time. 😑

The other meaning behind Gordy not attacking Ricky is that he sees him as an equal. It's clear that Ricky as an Asian American kid in a white family on a sitcom is going to be played for laughs, more than taken seriously, which is exactly the same thing as Gordy. Gordy recognizes Ricky as another victim of the system - of Hollywood otherizing him. It's another example of the overall theme of exploitation. But Ricky survives and tries to get even further in Hollywood. He has another successful show, but it's clear that it didn't go beyond that, once he grew up. He then uses the alien as a means of exploitation, to try to further his career in a way. But the alien winds up killing him because he doesn't know his place. He didn't just keep his head down and try to survive. He wanted more. This clearly connects with the Haywoods storyline as well. But - also him not knowing his place (or Hollywood/alien not letting him thrive as a celebrity) is juxtaposed with Gordy's legacy. Although what happened to Gordy is a tragedy, it winds up being played for laughs, used as means of entertainment / exploitation. Because that's all he was - a source of entertainment, a joke. The other characters in this movie want to go beyond being sidelined, but we never see them succeed at that endeavor. Maybe that happens in the end, but we don't get to see it.

That both storylines star ostracized minorities in a white dominated Hollywood, I think it's an extra-textual connection between their struggles in the industry, at best. It might just be a coincidence, too.

I thought the shoe was related to the saying “waiting for the other shoe to drop”… I had an old relative that used to say it, she lived in New York. Evidently a long time ago, imagine living under someone’s apartment. Linearly speaking… when they go to bed they take their shoes off, you hear the first shoe, and it’s like you’re sitting their knowing the next shoe is going to happen. I felt like it was symbolic for Jupe knowing the outcome of what was about to happen. Nonetheless I could be wrong but hey, definitely interesting. Hell of a movie.

I thought it interesting that the plots with the chimp and alien revolve around not making eye contact when eye contact is exactly how OJ and Emerald share their love for each other in the tender moments between them. Keeping in mind the shoe is in the same exact position as it is being displayed in Jupes collection, imo we're looking at this memory through Jupes eyes and when we cut to Jupe staring off reminiscing, hes standing in the same spot as Keke Palmer when she was staring at the shoe earlier. Obv the theme of the movie is exploitation, i think this scene ties into that very well. Great review!

I think there are a lot of cool nods to classic horror and alien movies. The shots of the UFO going over and behind the mountains references Escape to Witch Mountain, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind- two classic movies that highly influenced Hollywood’s portrayal of aliens. Also, the shot of blood running down the house’s stairs is a clear parallel to the Shinging.

I believe there is more to the Gordy attack that was cut in editing. There are a couple of scenes in the trailer that didn't make it into the movie that are clearly tied to the Gordy attack. I actually don't think the shoe was floating at all when the event happened. We are just seeing Jupe's memories and he doesn't remember everything exactly because of the massive trauma. The shoe is displayed as standing up in it's case in the room of all the Gordy memorabilia, so that is how he is remembering it in his memories. I also think there shouldn't be a "why" answer to why did Gordy not attack Jupe on the set. One of the themes of the movie, I think, is answering "why" is impossible. Why did Gordy go crazy? Why did he leave Jupe alone? Why did OJ/Emerald's dad have to die? Why did the animal come to that area in the first place? The point is that there is no rational "why" and part of the issue with our spectacle-loving culture is asking that question in the first place.

You could even take it a step further, in what this movie is saying about how African American-culture/music/talents/even tragedy & trauma- is continuosly exploited, and yet African Americans continue to be marginalized and mistreated until they are pushed too far resulting aggressive and sometimes violent reactions, resulting in the arrest, murder, etc.. of individuals whose reaction is understandable and justifiable. Then even that is used to further exploit African Americans.

Something that I don't really see people talking about, is how this movie can also be interpreted as a critique of standom/fandom culture. Jupe refers to Jean Jacket as the viewers and his depiction of the alien(s) looks like the cameras that were on set during the Gordy fiasco. The way people dehumanize the celebrities that they are fans of, turning them and their lives into an absolute spectacle. People complain about paparazzi, but they exist because fans who are obsessed with wanting to know every single aspect of a celebrity's life keep consuming what they produce.

I don’t think the shoe is actually standing up in the attack. I think that since Jupe has the shoe in his memorabilia room displayed like that, that’s how he sees it in the memory. It represents a safe place for him in the memory. And to me this ties into OJ being dead at the end. When Em looks and sees OJ on the horse, i think that’s a memory of him that she has in her head to represent a safe place after she saw him get eaten. But I’d like for him to live at the end and get revenge for his pops and live up to the family name.

I thought the same thing. I definitely felt like OJ and Lucky had died and Emerald was just seeing a vision of them. One thing that I've noticed that nobody spoke about is the scene where OJ's father got killed by those coins. I believe that the guy ( i forgot his name in the movie) the Gordy actor that played in the show with the monkey. I believe he has been doing these shows, it wasn't his first.. 1. He bought multiple horses from OJ. 2. There were coins everywhere at the guy's theme park. So I believe the coin that killed OJs dad was from the victims from his show prior. Thealien pretty much poops out the things it cant digest like the time it hoovered over their house and just realest the blood and garbage it sucked up. Before he got eaten by the alien he said" wow, he's a little early than usual" . Meaning he was doing shows on set schedule and he used the horses to lore the alien but this time the alien was on his own schedule
@vandal2802 жыл бұрын
The coins in Jupiter's Claim were special park tokens that operated the picture-taking well. The coin that killed the dad was a nickel, and likely came from the missing hikers that were mentioned on the radio in the beginning of the movie.

I think Jupe was trying to make the same connection he had with Gordy with the alien. Before Gordy was killed he attempted to fist bump Jupe, which I feel Jupe may have felt he had Gordy’s trust and might’ve even felt like he “tamed” him. I think in that moment the shoe sitting upright was an omen for Jupe as I feel it represents “wait for the other shoe to drop.” That situation should’ve been a lesson learned, but in hindsight it haunted Jupe into his adult years and eventually became his demise, hence “the other shoe dropped.” It was inevitable! I feel in that 6 months time Jupe was able to watch and build what he may felt was a trusting relationship with the alien, the same as he had with Gordy. I also feel he may have thought he had it “tamed” because he fed it horses. I think OJ & Em’s discovery of the alien made things worse as they began to “poke the bear.” I believe their provoking of it along with Jupe bringing in an audience/creating a “spectacle” as well as the fact that “lucky” didn’t leave the glass cell was what made it snap and ultimately losing its respect for its surroundings! Everything eventually came back full circle for Jupe, but at a higher cost!!! Great movie & review!!!

The names OJ and Emerald seem to have meaning. I haven't seen it yet but watching spoilers When I heard the names, OJ(I thought of OJ Simpson who was a fast athlete but under investigation for the murder of his ex wife of whatever). Emerald made me think of green/gem. There are alot of green themes from what I've seen. Like Emerald is always on go or wanting money. & OJ seems to be on the run & under investigation for the murders going in around him as the creature is prosecuting OJ..testing to see of he will "fess up"/look up at the creature. Jupe being dressed in red, standing next to a green curtain covering a horse named Lucky is also loud symbolism. The red could represent his blood sacrifice in order to gain some green from feeding that horse to the alien as ppl witnessed it. The red could also represent how Jupe didn't want to be ate(signal STOP) but wants the horse to be the food, having the green curtain on it(eat this GO) Ima watch it when it comes out on Redbox lol

Because I am old enough to remember OJ Simpson when everyone loved him and he was a football hero, I thought about his nickname back then. The Juice. Like ORANGE juice. So I thought about OJ and Emerald as orange and green. OJ played for the USC Trojans in college. There was a Trojan horse in the film because Jupe was trying to lure the beast with horses. Also the OJ trial was a huge spectacle. Now that I think about it, it was the first big media spectacle over a trial. On that kind of international scale.

Jupe played his role well and the point was made before he died, which was that some people just can't read between the lines even after a traumatic experience. They become the opressor instead of the liberator. The monkey fucked up all the perfect people but left the kid actor that messed up a line alone. "You dont deserve the impossible" The alien was a percieved threat but as it evolved and changed form it was only trying to adapt to a world it didnt belong in, in order to survive. Even though Ricky hid under the table he actually didnt avert his gaze from the scary monkey and guess what...he survived. The irony is that Ricky was an alternate persona of Jupe, it was an illusion. The monkey broke out of the illusion even though he didnt know exactly what was going on. He knew he had enough but ironically broke free of that before the audience and cast memebers did. Helloooo!! You also get to see how filmmaking has evolved also when you see an old style cast acting in a movie.

The reason we did not see more of Ricky was because the whole movie is just acts of animals (as it displays their name before each act). The animals being Ghost, Clover, Gordy, Lucky, and Jean Jacket. Each of the acts showing the death of each animal. Ghost got eaten by Jean Jacket, Clover was also eaten by Jean Jacket, Gordy got shot by the police, Lucky was the only survivor but OJ’s dad died and he was riding Lucky, Jean Jacket also died from the inflatable balloon from tourist park. I think there is two ways to view the shoe standing like that: Ether the shoe is the the bad miracle, in the sense on how statistically improbable it could land like that. Which lead to Jupe not to look at Gordy which saves him. Making the shoe a miracle but a bad one cuz it was caused by a tragedy. Gordy going violent is the spectacle that cause the shoe to fall like that . That a bad miracle is when something statistically improbable happens ethir caused by tragedy or its the thing that causes the tragedy. Or the spectacle is the shoe cus how it stands . And if u define a bad miracle as a tragedy than Gordy going violent is the bad miracle.

Jupiter is a God. Anyway, I really thought there was no other timing that would work. The Gordy scene was Jupiter’s mind. The scene was eerily quiet…like fate waiting for the other shoe to drop. That’s where Jup lived mentally. It’s why he believed he was indestructible. But he knew he was not well. Instead of acknowledging his trauma he ignored it/challenged it/rawhide riding against his trauma and the lessons from it.
