I was almost an adult when the net started to get universal. I remember the time before it and the contrast is huge. So many little things have changed. Its eerie when you really think about it. We see the same rate of social and cultural change in a year that ALL prior recorded generations would see over multiple decades, even centuries as you go further back. Thats gotta be having some effect right?

This is exactly why I don’t have social media at all other then to post certain stuff that I choose, I refuse to be a slave to any website anything that always feels the need to be used 24/7 that’s why the world is out of wack now, everybody can say and do what they want. People are so infatuated with how other people view them. Once you step away from it watch how much your world opens up, your mind will breathe again and you won’t be sucked into the void that everyone else seems to enjoy.

Not nice, he was a psycho who snapped. He kidnapped him, held him against his will, threatened to kill him - showing empathy after that isn't worth much and it's like exhibit A of how a Stockholm syndrome works or forms in a victim - dude was kidnapped and his life put in danger, in a way also because the kidnapper couldn't handle his guilt over playing with his phone instead of focusing on the road, which could've helped him avoid an accident.

I really felt for the poor mother trying to get into her daughter’s social. @@DonovanAenslaed how could you not? These poor parents were being inundated with messages or content directed at their lost child. I remember a lady crying and saying she couldn’t bear to tell another person her 20 year old son was gone. As a mother I couldn’t bear their loss and it was so easy to press ‘delete’. There needs to be an option to designate a next of kin when signing up for services like this. We don’t like to think about it, but it’s realistic to consider our digital footprint when we pass. This episode reminded me a lot of a my favorite one, Fifteen Million Merits. Both Bing and Chris had incredibly important messages to get out but neither of them succeeded in making any impact. Bing became another product to consume and Chris became another notification on a cell phone. Both characters were also concerned with our society's lack of authenticity and our habit of cheapening anything that can be considered real. This episode was also eye-opening in how desensitized we really are. I can't count how many times I've read about a tragedy that's trending on Twitter, registered how sad it is, and then just moved on. Death, pain, and suffering are all muted for us through our screens, just like the boys who watched a devastating hostage situation unfold and focused only on their social media feeds. I know that season five let people down because it didn't feel very "Black Mirror" like, but I disagree. The core of Black Mirror is still there and it continues to be ironic because the show presents us with all this insight and spectacular commentary on the world we live in, all wrapped up in an entertaining box of about an hour.

Another really interesting detail I'd like to mention is when Chris is waiting "in line" while listening to their playlist, the song "daydreaming" by radiohead plays In the background (the intro of the song to be specific). Thom Yorke, the frontman of the band allegedly wrote the song about his wife's death through cancer in 2015, being a metaphor how Chris' wife died as well. This time it's just not cancer, but social media. This episode was truly touching the first time because I realised the message immediately and had to stop myself from just skipping to the next episde. I was also tempted to check my phone as soon as the credits roll, but also noticed this toxic behaviour I was so addicted to already. This is a great video and I hope you but also black mirror will keep coming out with content, that's challenging and questioning the way we live in our modern day society. Have a great day!

Those were the days. Besides, this season had “happy endings”

i think is in part cause now were get used to black mirror "twists", the first seasons are not perfect but bring a feeling that any series had at that moment, now everyone has the general idea what black mirror vibe is, i really liked this season cause they laid back about the dark and depressing feel in previous seasons but mantaining the weird and tension it has, just in a minimalistic way and more "natural", i feel its hard for a series like black mirror stay with the hype cause nearly everyone wants more weird and dark twists (i kinda wanted too) and that could go wrong too or turning too cheesy

@@livcaitbff I totally agree, deep down if you really think about it they weren't happy endings at all. People are saying that Black Mirror only has happy endings now as if they never made any episodes with a happy ending. Those people either didn't watch every episode or they didn't really get the message behind them.

Modern society is entirely based on addiction. Whether it's, media, social media, exercise, money, or actual drugs. We are kept in a constant state of seeking out the next little hit of dopamine to provide meaning to our lives, because modern society fails miserably to give our lives meaning. Modern society is based on production and consumption. Not enlightenment, not the pursuit of knowledge, not the betterment of people and the world. We are nothing more than consumers. Slaves to a system doesn't care about life, only profits.

Moriarty really got a thing for holding a main character hostage then- That being said, when mum and I saw this episode, we felt so much for the Intern - him even having compassion on Scott’s character even before the end made me cry.

To be honest, I thought not revealing who was shot in the car was to share the message that it didn't matter. That when we look at the headlines for horrible tragedies in the world, they're just that. Headlines and stories than hardly seem real on your phone screen. But we as the viewers thought otherwise, wanting to know and caring about how it ended because we experienced the hostage situation and got to know the characters in the car. But, I definitely missed a whole lot more of the point of the show.

Even if everyone checked their phone for only a second, from the sad look on their faces I think it was Jayden who got shot and not the man they only know as the hostage taker. Maybe we'll find out in a later episode... The dialog between Bauer and forgot his name already as well as the final struggle between Jayden and him in the car is also an example of real communication vs. what it looks like from the outside/on social media. Noone looking at them from afar or following the "story" would have guessed his supposed victims were trying to save the hostage taker's life. The news feed in the end would read "Man X killed in hostage situation involving Smithereen, company spokesperson: "We are devastated"

Wow amazing point. I do think if the sniper accidentally killed Jayden and Chris survived that, Chris would have quickly retrieved his own gun and shot himself. So I think either way in the end he wouldn't have been "robbed" of exiting the world. In a situation like his after watching this story, maybe it's weird to say- but I actually felt BAD for Chris that both the cops and his hostage weren't LETTING him kill himself. He wasn't even trying to make a huge statement to get the CEO to do something, or to create big social change. He literally just wanted to "say his piece" then leave. He seems so relieved and at peace after their talk. Putting him in prison feels like a cruel punishment when he never truly endangered his hostage, the cops with help of people posting about the "replica" gun did that. Social media IS manufactured to be like gambling, cocaine, etc- all addictions that hijack our brains' dopamine pathways. Just as we treat addictions as illnesses and blame drug manufacterers and traffickers, casino owners etc...the same should be true of social media users vs creators.

18:00 I interpreted Billy's eyes closing as him being almost the only person whose eyes aren't stuck to their phone. The song is playing "can't keep my eyes off of you" right as they show him close his eyes. But it's also a position of privilege, he's in charge, he knows exactly how things work (many others are simply manipulated by it)... he could be closing his eyes to the addiction everyone else is in- through perhaps a combo of privilege and character- and/or closing his eyes to the consequences of his actions, whether through willfulness or lack of power even though he has "all" the power. Chris also had his eyes OFF of social media unlike everyone around him (emphasized in the episode before he picks up his hostage)- but only as a result of huge loss, grief and most of all- shame. Only after that does he have his eyes opened to the fault that should be placed on the companies for the state he was in before the tragedy.

Worth mentioning the part about suicide by Jayden, how it ruined his whole families life and his mum became a meth addict. There’s no escape, in the real world and out of the real world. And the suicide references of the mums daughter how it destroyed her life. To show that even as a maniac who took a man hostage, suicide still just was not an option for him as his own hostage intervened.

Fajita Worm Probably an episode with a different society from ours. Every season had one or two episodes that show a society that’s already accustomed to their futuristic tech, but in this season there was one episode in the present and two episodes with technology that is new to the characters. Season 1 had Fifteen Million Merits and The Entire History of You, Season 2 had White Bear and White Christmas, Season 3 had Nosedive, San Junipero, Men Against Fire and Hated in the Nation, Season 4 had USS Callister, Hang the DJ and Metalhead... but Season 5 had nothing like that. A great thing about black Mirror was showing how the technology we already think nothing of subtly effects our lives, but Season 5 seems to some more pandering because it actively fears the future of technology because it presents the technology as experimental in the new episodes. Black Mirror sets itself apart from “what if phones but too much” because it doesn’t fear the future, it fears the present

In the episode, Chris tells Jaden that his gun is a replica, while Smithereens' higher ups were listening in and forwarded the info to police, who then found out that was a lie when Chris fired a warning shot.
