yeah! due to limitations with the NES the PPU could only scroll H or V. The Super Mario Bros. cartridge doesn't have any mapper IC, so this is impossible!

@@derpyVfoxoX6 No. The first one to support this kind of thing is Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario USA on Japan. Due to NES limitations without expansion chips inside the cartridge (which the original Super Mario Bros. didn't have), the screen could only scroll one way or another and the only way to change this is if you soldered two contacts together or not inside the cartridge. The thing the video shows is blatantly false. If you load up an emulator and try it yourself, you will see it doesn't work. To prove you wrong on the Vertical Scrolling you mentioned, on world 1-2, you can get all the way on top of the ceiling if you find the way. If you do this, you will get behind the text at the top of the screen and see that, no matter how much you jump there, the screen won't scroll vertically.

For the record, I got this to work on the original version for NES system back in the 90s. Finally nice to see someone else found this. Gotta hit the 041. **This DID NOT WORK in SNES All Stars!** I had read an early edition of Nintendo Power but it did not make the published version because the developers did not intend this to happen and didn't want to advertise an "error" in the game!

Apparently Super Mario Bros only has vertical and horizontal scrolling, and not diagonal scrolling (in Sonic the Hedgehog when the screen scrolls when you jump, that's diagonol scrolling.)

The NES can handle 2 screens long for scrolling purpose that can either be only horizontal (SMB) or only vertical (some part of Metroid). The thing the NES struggle with is when you go diagonal : trickeries has to be used that end up with glitches on the sides of the screen (go check SMB3).

I ran into it quite by accident. All the elements were aligned perfectly without me even knowing it. I missed the jump, expecting to lose the game and was amazed to keep going and the prize when I finally arrived at the bottom. did you know that you can play as gwimbly in smb? yeah, the 90s 3d platformer character everyone loves. myamoto liked him so much that he updated smb to add gwimbly as a playable character. all you have to do is defeat bowser, the real one, and when the princess peach cutscene is playing press b three times. this will unlock gwimbly with his iconic moves such as his gwimbly gun and every time you collect a power-up, a coin or beat a level, he does his iconic victory dance: "ooh ooh ooh!". isn't that neat?

This is a fun glitch. If you hold down A and then press start on title screen you'd return to last world you died in. So you only had to replay to whole game after losing last life if you didn't know this trick.
