That one mistake cost us dearly. We need to be more careful and more defended in future. Our latest upgrade is going to make us more robust and I may even add some armour behind our defences to make us a little tougher.

"I'd like to see inside that ship" - You can spawn that ship in creative mode and take a look at not just the insides but crew assignments and everything. Some designs have crazy good optimization, even though most are a balance between looking pretty and optimized.

25:50 You can take over a defeated ship if its hulk still has a hatch. To do that, go near it, use your ship's hamburger menu and transfer a crewman. After that you can see inside AND rebuild the while thing and even save a blueprint.

to see the blueprint you can check all designs in creative. I'd advise against capturing hostile ships for the sole purpose of checking their blueprint. If you want to use it/scrap it for ressources though, then go for it!

@@tyraelpl you can see all blueprints in the game from the blueprint search menu, just click build new ship, load in a bluprint in the build menu and on the side you can see all the ships in the game

@@tyraelpl well it is tedious and can even be dangerous to do. Its much more complicated to disable a ship than to just destroy it. Of course you are totally free to do so and there are ways to achieve it. For example using mining beams to destroy reactors without them exploding. You gotta be pretty aware of your surroundings and be in a more expensive (well crewed and defended) ship. So if you are doing all this to check the blueprint its much better to remember the name and look the ship up in creative instead

*1:01:21* The ship you just met is Clockwork. It's supposed to be a missile kite, so it has barely any forward thrust however *a lot* of backthrust. But since rails outrange missiles, your ship kinda breaks it... Which is unfortunate because that ship is a beastly encounter, not to mention very beautiful. Anyways great episode, I loved the complications that higher level ships got you in and the countermeasure design decisions you had to take to avoid them from happening again. Good luck with the final areas, but with an OP railkite that most of the game's AI can't fight against and is defenceless against, I'm pretty sure you won't be needing any of it.

What if you built a bunch of smaller versions of this ship. Just one or two rails each. They would be able to go similar speeds with less engines and crew, plus with multiple ships you could aim all the rails at the weak point of a ship simultaneously without having to rotate back and forth. You'd have to setup a flight formation and everything but it would be cool. I started playing this game since you started the series and I'm enjoying it a lot. It's clear they put a lot of thought into things and allow you to play basically any way you want to without having difficulty getting most any ship designs to work.

I was thinking similar, just have a personal Militia of ships to fight against the pirates. you could probably bring along flak ships and missile ships too.

​@@zito88a lot more to think about, yeah. Done the 16-18 zones a couple times, and by far my easiest runs were with one oversized rail-boat flagship, and a couple nuke-interceptors. Flagship to keep them occupied, interceptors to flank from behind and drop a nuke in their weakest points before hightailing (Hyperjump, once at a safe distance) back to my Hauler for an ammo restock. FJ has definately given me a reason to come back to the game, and maybe try out some Chaingun-interceptors for early game

I was thinking same, modular single railgunships, a missileboat or maybe just a ball bearing to take damage and interest of enemy vesel. But probably fastest per-click is still glass cannon and reverse a solar system when firing railguns :)

45:30-46:00 This is the direct result of improper crew management. When one reactor got taken down, the crew in that sector decided to retrieve energy from another sector, exiting the ship to do so. As an aside, mining lasers also return more resources from scrapping than crew do, so it's still worth using them to scrap ships.

One potential way to reduce the amount of 'make work' around the flying warehouse would be to set resource limits so that it automatically stops collecting (say) steel when you have more than X quantity of it. This would also allow you to happen to pick up low quantity items that you don't expect to need and then end up needing.

Trading with the small ships that also visit stations is a great way to trade for Tri Steel and uranium. But there is joy in mining the sun as well.

36:07 when in need of repair, and the ship doesn't have the resources in storage, it'll automatically target, collect and assign resources floating nearby, aka nomnomnivore snacks from recent kills. No need to go back to the Hauler every time (assuming the enemy ships have dropped the resources required, ofc)

Also, (unless it's been changed and I haven't noticed) Rails' range only goes up to a set point, long before the 30(or so) rail extenders reach maximum efficiency. After range is maxed, it only affects damage and penetration, assuming nothing has changed since I last took out the 16-18 zones (which was before the QOL of having crew do any of the repairs or construction), also using an oversized Rail-Boat as the flagship. Looking forward to FJ getting there 😁

*@Francis John* 1:03:12 Put that exit-airlock near an edge or corner of the ship, NOT in the middle (& adjust crew-quarter locations accordingly). 1:03:20 Ah, exactly. Then you can park the ship & rotate it such that the airlock is as close as possible to the scrap-target, *that allows your crew to work longer on the ship before running out of oxygen,* by cutting down the travel time in space to reach the target. You could even build an "arm" with the airlock at the end, so the ship can reach even further towards the target.

46:56 Can you imagine if crew rescue/capture mechanics existed? Where would you put that many crew/hostages? You would have to include so many brigs and additional crew quarters; adding weight and slowing down your ship. Who would do that???

@FrancisJohn You can load a blueprint and seen inside all the ships if you want to. It has stats along with it like crew needed and credits value. It's in the drop-down on left when you are loading in your own ship designs. You can also load in the space stations if you want to.

The best way to farm uranium is to do small ship to lower lvl zones armed exclusively with mining lasers. Mining lasers make reactors not explode at hit.

I suggest longer rails. 300% seems like a good sweet spot. Make 4 or 6, slices through everything when you fan them.

Needs at least one 26 segment rail to more or less ignore shields, but I haven't figured out how to build a viable ship with that for less than 1.5M credits.

@@thefreeaccount0 oh, if cost is a factor, my suggestion is not possible. The 1/2 minimalistic 8 rail, 300%, ship I built was 7mil ish, with only reverse thrust. Traveled in reverse and rotated to face enemies in combat. If you want speed forward and back, and good shielding, 10mil minimum.

If mining resources yourself, cost shouldn't be an issue. Just go back to previous zones, and/or other low-lvl zones, and stripmine everything. It'll be tedious work, but filling in the entire ship size is definately possible without spending a single credit, just need a good Hauler (or three) to store it all

1. Yes there is thrust to weight ratio where additional engines start providing little benefit. 2. Capacitors are pretty awful unless you need to split double or triple batteries amongst smaller things or share power.

The mirror view in the top right can be resized and you can use it to target, you do not have to zoom in and out for every single ship you fight. In the options you can tell it to always show enemy ship in combat.

1:04:55 earlier on I thought you could make one ship of each weapon kind as a challenge. You've taken the best weapon and you have built a really good ship. Next challenge would be to build another ship but without railguns.

Railguns are easily the best weapons in the game at least when it comes to career, for sure, but missiles are a not that far second. Any type of missile in fact is good. HEs are the best all rounder weapon and they have second best range out of all the damage dealers, excluding railguns (And in extremely niche circumstances, nukes), with their 450 range, so you can still make a solid kite out of it. EMPs are great at destroying shielded enemies from afar. Nukes are exceptional at dealing unholy amounts of brute force damage at a relatively closer range, and Mines are easily the best complement weapon for kiting ships, with their tendency to... Kind of delete any ship bold enough to chase you in an instant.

You got to a point where crew is no longer a main concern, but resources are. Particularly Uranium, to scale your power needs. That is where capacitors come to play, fitting the bill very well for your larger rail on thrusters vessel. The larger cores produce more batteries than you can consume in your thrust area, so you can exchange one or two of your cores with capacitors, quarters and walkways. Otherwise you will need to scavenge the entire universe to find the necessary materials for the amount of energy from cores you’ll need. As you noticed, a lot of the ships you’ve encountered were very optimized. Time for you to do the same before you hop into the end levels.

You Can look into the designs you fight,/kill you can usually transfer crew(not using the hail though, and 1 crew is enough) to the downed ship and the largest remaining bit of ship will have the full blueprint you can repair them and run them or save the blueprint, I've noticed that the doors are not always correct but it does teach you a bit. And on a side note that mesh "structure" does not block shields, you can then make some armour in front of your shields which does stop the EMP's from taking down your shields most of the time for a minor amount of repairs (which seems more crew efficient because you need less shielding you do need to run some smaller shields so you have more contact points at the front though) that only cost steel anyway(weighs a tenth of armour has a fourth of the hit-points but displaces the EMP blast away from sensitive stuff) since you're not getting in range of anything except EMP and rail gus when you are a rail platform ...

A mining outpost can be either simple storage for relay back to the main base, but usually you would do one level of processing as you will always need to do that anyway and it reduces the size of the material so it takes less trips to transport.

This game has drag and a theoretical top speed of 120m/s. So as your thrust to weight ratio gets diminishing returns as you try for more than 80m/s

@@arkansasorigami83 good point. The 120 isnt a hard cap its where the thrust vs drag becomes very hard to improve. Thrust vs weight is linear but drag is exponential

Consider building a relatively small brawler ship whose all purpose is to flank the enemy and either shot their engines down or bait them to turn around leaving back open for your railgun Also add a bit of armour in front of your generators so they won't get destroyed by a random lucky shot. Just a little bit will help a lot

Capacitors in general feel like they need a change. 1 battery is not good enough, especially when it comes to larger ships. Plus having a capacitor is supposed to store energy and release it all at once. Batteries are supposed to store energy and release it incrementally.

I love the design of some of the higher level ships. involves another refit but a couple emp missiles up front instead of 2 of the flak cannons and you can take out the shields for your rails

Look at the ship library, those ships should be there in some folder, if that ship comes from a mod then the folder for workshop items should show in the ship library, great examples there on how to build different type of ships. Maybe the ship does not run full speed for long, who knows, also most of the weapons with ammo use no energy, or little of it.

Franky, move your reactors back a couple squares between the rails and you can bring them closer to ship centre by putting shields up front. Move the control and all that crap in the middle to the back. #1 priority is to have rails as close to the centre of ship as possible. Also longer rail = longer range & more damage (up to a maximum). got the game, went to a lvl 4-6 zone, there is a ship called the Backup, it has a cannon in front with a nuke launcher behind it and shields, so when you destroy the cannon it launches nukes... I was nuked 3 times..

Emp missiles only do 300 physical dmg and 18m emp you could set up some forward side armor attached by structure blocks that tanks emp missiles. And keep shields safe from emp. One large shield can easily take two rail shots

Although it is possible, having forward armor just for EMP will cost more steel in repairs. Armor, once it's taken 1 damage, costs 1 steel to repair, up to full consteuction costs, depending on how much damage it soaks up before actually getting the repairs done. Have tried similar, and personally just found it more annoying than helpful. Against early-game emp ships, it's very useful, though. A lot more steel per damage done/taken

@@salemprompthous3820 I think the bigger issue of adding that armor would be weight slowing the ship down. This ships survivability relies mainly on being fast enough to keep out of weapons range

@@JuanSoloPlays but only if using actual armor tiles. Structure tiles stop missiles aswell, and has about 0.2 of the mass of armor. With more engines (which I do believe FJ mentioned was the plan), adding those forward armor-structures doesn't slow down the ship anyway, unless you do double/triple layer. As I said, built this myself, so speakin' from personal experience, not just theorycrafting.

@@salemprompthous3820 alright. You were discussing armour though. Aniway, at the end of the day its a balance act. You could shed some weight reducing reactor amount, trying to shrink the ship. Also if you can get away with not having identical forward and backward thrust or removing rear defences altogether would help to have some free weight to put on some armour. In most engagements this designs faring really well. What concerns me more than emps is the high explosivenes of so many reactors

@@JuanSoloPlays my previous was about both armor and structure. Either works in stopping EMP missiles, which the main topic. I have over 400 hours in the game, and built a lot of different ships. OP's suggestion in stopping EMPs from taking down the shields has been one of my issues late-game, and have tested different solutions. And yes, you're absolutely right about ship design being a balancing act. If you have a definitive goal about what you want your ship to do, you have to make sure you can balance out all different aspects (main aspects being the big 3; damage, defense, speed). Increase one, and you'll end up decreasing the others. FJ said plainly what he wanted: a ship that can surgically take out other ships before they even get within range of shooting back, having a top-speed of minimum 100m/s. Plan was to add more engines, so adding some forward armor should not intrude on the speed. Adding a structural missile-catcher definately does not intrude on the speed. So balancing it all does come imto play

I put the the flak beside each other so the same ammo factory can feed them. If we put them either side of the shield it would complicate logistics.

The worst two ships I found in the game were both rammer ships that I'm curious if you'll be able to avoid. The one was the Negotiator, which I made a similar ship of and mass chain guns are just an absolute blast. But the level 18 was the Shostopyor. Absolute nightmare. Hope whenever you find it you totally wreck it

How about adding some side firing EMP missiles or something else to compliment the railguns? Considering you're always reversing, the enemy would be flying straight at your missiles.

I thought about missiles but decided against them. The ship is a balancing act between Damage, Speed and defence. Our two biggest obstacles are shields and Flak/PD. Missiles are countered by Flak/PD so adding in EMP missiles only helps with heavily shielded targets that don't have flak/PD. I decided I would prefer to have more rails and better defence/speed against enemy. Adding in EMP with only help against a specific type of target, more rails helps against just about everything.

you need to add more air locks to support ship. if you can get the pawns out and in the ship faster it should speed up collecting of your booty. I'm wondering if you put air locks near the room and air locks near the respectable storage area would the pawns use the one closest to that storage

I have seen a Cosmoteer brawler channel and they have several designs like that shown. They call them fidgit spinners. They work really well assuming you don't have to move, they need to stop and spin up before the enemy gets in range. They tend to be very slow.

Most of the enemy ships seem to be extremely vulnerable from one particular direction. Could go a two ships approach. One heavily armored tank that grabs attention and one offensive ship that sneaks around a hits the weak side.

in the pvp community we call that "trapping" and it's the most effective strategy in the game. Its only downside is that it requires more micromanagement. I'm sure that's enough of a downside for FJ.

Multiple ships sounds like far more effort, I figure we get enough gun on the ship we can pound down the front door. Though when I do another run I'll have to do a close combat cannon ship for fun.

The reason the enemy is outranging you is because the railgun range is set at the first module of your gun. so a shorter gun will outrange a longer gun.

I would want to see how one sided, quick turning killer stick would do. if you halve the engines you can double the rails (again) ? edit: it could be also much better at strafing due to having side engines

Can you make a large no weapons ship (maybe some EMPs), with a huge scoop at the front, and tons of engines, to push enemies in to the sun dmg zone ?

I think the Lag/CPU drain just scales with level due to the increased complexity of the ships, etc. Going back to a lower level are I have a lot less of it.

I rebuilt an enemy ship and it had 500 crew space, their were several of those ships floating around the level so I think you have hit the nail on the head about lag.

u should make a run without rails, its too easy, btw u can deactivate that resource mode, and j ust get credits (to save time) (but i dont know how good ship upgrades then work)

I didn't get the reference Francis mentions at 44:50. P-90's? I know Ba'al is like a surname for the devil or Satan, but what's P-90's?

Only thing I can think of is a refference to the series Stargate. One of the major big bads was Ba'al and the hero team was usualy using FN P-90s as main armament.

Stargate SG1 was a cheesy bit of fun si-fi. The most fun Villain was Ba'al. The troops were from the air force so carried P90s, which looks cool but were totally not how they would have been used. P90 was a gun you cram in a cockpit as an emergency weapon if you get shot down. Still it was a fun show and seeing Ba'al as a ship name got me thinking it had to be a stargate reference. Though yes it is originally a Egyptian god, I'm still thinking it's a si-fi game so I figure Sg1 was an influence.

Damage drops off the longer you go, so multiple smaller rails do more total damage.

I ended up going this way in the end. A bit slower going forward while maintaining our reversing speed advantage. Used the extra weight this allowed us to put on some more armour.
