Rails are indeed absolutely busted in Career. In the PvP gamemodes of Cosmoteer much less so, because the enemies you're going up against actually have *brains* and know how to counter your cheesy tricks, such as stalling you out, spreading your rail fire with armor and tilting and of course, investing into enough speed to catch you up. However against AI rails are impeccable.
@HenrikEbert Жыл бұрын
As someone who "finished" the game I got bored of rails at some point and purposely switched to other weapons because they stopped being fun. I never touched PVP but seeing his minmaxed ship it is relatively easy to counter, his sides are unprotected and I cant see any weapons that cover them. A small speedy boi could yeet itself into his side and proceed to chew him up. And to be honest watching the battles got boring once he got the rails going. The highest point of tension was when he got sandwiched and even then he got out easily.
@IsilionNELE Жыл бұрын
@@HenrikEbert How's the run going? I wanted to do a run using weapons I don't often use, so I challenged myself to only use missiles, high energy ones and EMP. It got a bit boring, the accuracy is so damn low fights take way too long, and after the fight there's not a bit of enemy ship left because you hit everything EXCEPT the spot you were aiming for
@HenrikEbert Жыл бұрын
@@IsilionNELE My run was about a year ago I believe, dont if anything major changed in that time. In the end my ship was just a facetanking capital gun/pd/lasergun with as much speed as I could give it (including strafing). So I would get nice and close and then circle my enemies and dakka them down. Huge repair bill but with the resources my factory/mining ship got per zone... not a problem.
@salemprompthous3820 Жыл бұрын
@@HenrikEbert a multifaceted fleet is a lot more fun end-game, mostly cause it takes a bit more brain to manage, rather than what the 30-length railboats do. Completely agree with you about rails quickly becoming boring.
@HenrikEbert Жыл бұрын
@@salemprompthous3820 I lack brain so I went for the sledgehammer approach after the sniperrifle got boring. Might also motivate Noita fans to check out your Cosmoteer videos...
@MarcCastellsBallesta Жыл бұрын
The entire series has been awesome, Francis. At the beginning I thought you would going to do a symmetry ship with railguns at 90° or 45° and make it spin like a machine gun. As a future challenge for you, I'd go with a repeat but with a couple of restrictions: no big ships, no railguns. Or any variation. Maybe no big railguns, or force yourself into a specific ship shape. Diagonal only, triangle only, etc. Like rolling 2 dies when building a ship: size & weapon type. The quests may be repetitive, but there's a lot options for the player.

It seems like the game knew when to end. I do not think the gameplay loop would of stayed interesting much beyond this point. Even if their was higher level equipment and more advance enemies, the size of the ships would just be to unwieldy.
@daanstrik42936 ай бұрын
Already the gameplay loop is stretched thin. The game is still being developed thankfully. More mission types being one of the things currently in the development. That being said, the true game here (for me at least) is in creative mode. There is a suprising amount of depth from simple mechanics. And making a ship that is equally cost effective to the built in ships is a major challenge that still entertains me after hundreds of hours. Let alone if I also want it to be aestetically pleasing. There’s new parts being added as well, which all significantly add to the available options

I will note that Outer wilds is on my list of games to play, and since it has a knowledge-based progression system any gameplay at all would spoil it (the ending is already spoiled for me, but the journey there isn't) I won't be watching if you play it. Same would have been true with Tunic, but I've already beaten that game. Just fair warning to anyone interested in those particular titles.

Amazing series Francis! I've been playing this game since its early alpha stages and loved seeing your uniquely utilitarian approach to ship design! I've been mulling around a "Borg cube" challenge for a while now, where you take the modularity of ship design to its natural conclusion. The challenge would be to have a small number (1-5) of perfectly square modules that each feed off of a single reactor, aiming to create a ship that can take out a maximum level sector. Since I haven't seen any Borg freighters around, you'd also have to keep all of your cargo inside, and I'd also recommend limiting your reactor size for the first few sectors. It goes without saying that tractor beams should be a part of the offensive modules eventually! Also, I really like the wheel spinning system! I think it's a good compromise between popularity and viewer-driven suggestions.

Railguns aren't OP, they are extremely limiting.
@daanstrik42936 ай бұрын
@@toddboward4771Against the AI? They’re defenitely OP. They outrange everything, and their main balancing factor is their weight (which makes speed a major challenge to achieve). But in Career your own ships can be so much more expensive that you can outspeed + outrange everything (as was shown here). So long as you have enough damage to penetrate shields + enough ammo you will *always* win with these parameters.

Yeah, Cosmoteer is one hell of a game, as you said, a little repetitive right now, but it is still early access and it's a super strong base for whatever they plug in to it next. Rails are very powerful, but you could try the other weapons, set on multiple ships. You don't really have to micro other weapons as much as you do with the rails, as most of them have a wider firing arc that they can shoot from, so you wouldn't have to do the rail-shimmying, just point at your target and maneover your ships to keep them on target and safe. Flying a pack of smaller non-railgun ships is a very different feel to flying the one monster around! 😉 Looking forwards to watching you play Noita next Francis, it's a VERY different game that can be over in a blink or last for a while. And your strength depends on luck as well as skill. Another amazing indie game with a truly phenomenal world built by the engine, I was incredibly impressed when I first started playing Noita. You should feel quite at home in Noita's world, it's probably as hostile as the Dark Souls or Salt games 🙂

Noita is an awesome game. Just watch out for polymorphine. That stuff can kill you if just a single drop touches you. The easiest way to get your run going is to learn how to increase your attack speed by using chainsaws, luminous drills and drill bolts while also having enough "add mana" to not deplete the mana bank of your wand while firing att maximum speed.

@danielduncan6806 Жыл бұрын
The problem many indie games face is, they never go all the way. You could handle so much more than what this game is currently offering. They could halt your progress here, and take the level of enemies up to 40. And that may still be too easy for you. I like to feel like a god in games, after some work of course. I like it when I am sitting there facing a half dozen enemies at once, it makes me feel powerful. I like to sit here and say "I can take you all on, hundreds of you, a sea of you, all at once!" And then I maniacally laugh. It is fun. But no game ever created has been able to deliver. Everyone is always worried about letting me get too powerful. Like somehow me being really powerful is a bad thing. Like, what the fuck is "overpowered"? I do not understand this concept. As long as I have to work my way to it, as long as I have to earn it, let me be "overpowered". And the overwhelming vast majority of indie games just don't do it. They just don't, but they should. They should let gamers live out their power fantasies.
@FrancisJohnYT Жыл бұрын
Older games tend towards allowing players to get massively overpowered. Not because it was part of the plan but because game balance was less relevant back then. I still go back and play Master of Orion 2 sometimes just to make a super high tech ship that can take on the entire universe. The down side is older games have terrible graphics and tend to be very grindy.
@daanstrik42936 ай бұрын
Because being overpowered is usually the end of the game. Its fun for a while but being OP bores a lot quicker than working towards becoming OP. And a lot of games nowadays are either multiplayer, “live service” or plan DLC. which means they don’t want the game to end. I too enjoy being OP, but I want to feel OP through mastery of the game, not because the game has no more challenges left to provide. If i’m cutting down a sea of enemies I want to come out victorious yes, but also bloodied and bruised.
