English ghost stories are the best. But these were real people and whatever was going on these were hard times for them. Good people. Extraordinary times, and difficult events. The most wonderful thing that seems very English to me as an American is where the ghost says a nasty obscene insult and everybody freezes for a second and raises their eyebrows, but then Juliet Stevenson says, would anybody like another slice of cake? Stiff upper lip indeed!
