A full unabridged audiobook of the classic short story, "The Engine Driver", by Andrew Halliday - complete with sounds and visuals.
"The Engine Driver" takes the form of an interview. The silent narrator is standing with a mysterious-looking train driver as he explains the trials and tribulations that come with running an engine of the line in Victorian England. There is no doubt that Halliday must have interviewed real-life drivers for this piece as it most resembles an article in a paper or magazine, rather than that of a narrative piece of prose.
"Mugby Junction" is a set of short stories written in 1866 by Charles Dickens and collaborators Charles Collins, Amelia B. Edwards, Andrew Halliday, and Hesba Stretton. It was first published in a Christmas edition of the magazine All the Year Round.
Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.

Delightfully British, and seems chronologically accurate...the english spoken by the English of this period is easily my favorite, and might be considered by linguists to be the zenith over the centuries. I had the distinct privilege of playing E.Scrooge where the script was taken directly from the novel. I cannot imagine it being better, and getting to emote through words, trying hard to sound like it was your normal speech was priceless... " and you'd think yourself Ill-used if I were to withhold a half-crown for it, I'll be bound..."

Thank you for your kind words! It’s always a pleasure to read things like this as you get a sense of the wonder and intrigue that comes with the enterprise of the time. I played Fred in a version of ACC in London a few times and completely agree with you. So glad I discovered your channel. An old neighbour of mine was a train driver. I remember a young bloke took his life by stepping in front of his train. It devastated him and he couldn't go back to driving. He stayed working the platform afterwards. I don't think he ever really recovered, very tragic.

These are really a fun collective. Especially for train enthusiasts! Prefect elocution, tenor, tone. 🎉

Thanks Evelan! I stumbled upon this obscure collection, “Mugby Junction”, by Dickens and other contributors. More to come soon, and then hopefully I’ll release it as a full collection!

Delightful. ! Interesting subject matter and language. Perfectly performed. I'll be sure to listen often to learn and master the idiom , vocabulary and cadence. Then drive everyone around me crazy since I live and work in the heart of New York City where people speak with the worst accent in the English speaking world.. Well done,my good man !

Thank you, that was very interesting. The Victorian equivalent of the modern documentary, perhaps! I see that this was published in the 1860s and I am trying to guess at what the wages - 8/- a day - would be worth. Bob Crachit famously earned 15/- a week (albeit 30 years earlier) so 8/- a day was perhaps relatively good money?

That’s great to hear! It seems to be a rather sought after position, although I’m not sure they were quite as heavily unionised as today 🤔

Wrong accent for where the engine driver was supposed to grow up. Definitely not a southern accent as the geography focused on Yorkshire?

As the driver left home at a young age and spent time working on the Brighton line as well as the east counties line I felt like neutralising his accent somewhat.
