I learned how to use a sewing machine 8 years ago (I was about 11). If you watch carefully, you can see all of this happening as you thread your bobbin. This video just put what I had already figured out into words.

I got my love of sewing from my grandmother, and I've been hand sewing professionally for over 12 years. I believe that sewing is a very useful skill to know, regardless of gender. And sewing can be a lot of fun!

I agree. I learned how to sew professionally before I learned how to repair the machines. Knowing how to operate them has made me a better mechanic. And yes, learning to sew by any gender is a useful skill.

My Brother learned to make lace inside of a handkerchief from our Grandmother from Norway, knitting and crocheting from our Great Aunt, and he learned to spin wool to yarn and thread then weave it into tapestries from a Native American neighbor when he was 10. He makes all kinds of cool stuff.

My mom taught me how to hand sew, and it's definitely come in handy (pun intended). Last year, I found an old Singer machine from the 60s somebody was throwing away, and I learned how to use it. I made my own COVID masks with it and have altered a few garments to fit better. Sewing gets a rap as a hobby for housewives and old ladies, but it's a super useful skill for anyone to have.

The only part that can still be confusing is how the top thread creates to loop, and bobbin gets woven-in through the loops. A CAD video example would be very helpful.

Watch it again. That housing around the bobbin grabs the needle thread, pulls it out and around the entire bobbin. Pretty neat idea.

That's really the only part that's never been explained to me before. Even having my own machine and watching it start to work, this part wasn't clear. The top thread looping around the entire bobbin is how this isn't all done with slip knots. The speed at which these machines can perform this trick, many times per second, without destroying the thread every time, is further amazing.

Thank you so much for this! In middle school, all they taught us was how to thread it and I would always forget steps and be punished for it. All I wanted was to understand the machine I was using but the teacher felt like I was just slowing down the class. I'm 26 now but I've always been afraid of sewing for this reason but thanks to you guys I think I might try it again now that the machine actually makes sense to me!

Oh man that’s a bad teacher. 🙁 I let my kid start using my machine when he was 7 or 8. He’s mechanically inclined and it’s a very cheap machine. See if you can pick one up second hand, one with no electronics (screen), and just muck around with it!

I know extender, it is basically a repeater, it can take signal and make it strong, because a router itself cant send a signal for example 15 meters, it can go for 14 max (again this is just example) and the repeater takes the signal and makes it stringer from its specific spot, you can think about it like the repeater in minecraft, it is the same idea

One more random fact: originally a scroll saws/jigsaws were just modified sewing machines. Bottom part with the bobine was removed and the needle was replaced with a small saw blade. As for actual sewing machines, i had the pleasure to work with a 1929 Singer machine that was retrofitted with a motor instead of that one big pedal. It sounded like a train and honestly felt like one, but would sew anything from fine silk to thick warm blankets with no problems. Really awesome machine! Thank you for the explanation of the mechanism. It made sense and was actually interesting to learn about.

Partner had to hand stitch a repair in a machine stitched item and because he's never used a sewing machine he thought the two separate threads were not supposed to hook into each other. It was adorable and I wish I could have shown him this video at the time.

So Barthelemy Thimonnier created one of the first successful sewing machines. He had a factory that mainly sewed uniforms for the French army... at a very quick pace. Other tailors in the area got scared because he was taking their jobs, so they all came together and burned down his factory... with him in it. Thimonnier survived, rebuilt, and they did it again. He survived the second murder attempt as well.

One of the greatest mysteries that plagued my mind as a 5 years old. But by the age 6 I had pretty much figured out how it might be working. That was the day when I tried to load the thread and i failed to load the secondry thread and when I pulled on the stitching it came out and I had figured out why they have to load secondry thread.

Nate, it's almost like weaving. The rotary shuttle moves in a circle and grabs the loop from the needle side and makes a full revolution with it. Then stich and repeat!

I've been sewing off and on since I was in my early teens. I can take apart just about every piece of a basic machine for basic repairs, service and, of course, oil it. I have known how to do this since I was a teenager. Seriously, my mother taught me about sewing machines before I even learned how to drive. It honestly never occurred to me to even think about exactly how it sews though. It was always just something I took as an unknowable given. Your model though explained it perfectly. Crazy, I bought a sewing machine a week or two ago. Have no idea how to sew, but have some projects I want to sew. I learned how to use the machine, but still have no idea how the machine creates a stitch. All I know is "Unstiched fabric goes in one end, stitched fabric comes out the other".
