St. John Chrysostom is also a saint of the Catholic Church with his own feast day and included in the Litany of the Saints. He had his cross on and they said take it off or we will rip it off. He said the only way that cross would be removed was over his dead body and he firmly clutched it in his hand and said want to try? Needless to say he was allowed to keep it on and was later discharged as last of kin since his dad had died in the Pacific theater years before. True story.

The purpose of praying for government officials and the military is not political. It has been that way since like 316ad. It means we pray that God guides them with His wisdom. It also means we pray for their safety and peace. As for victory over adversaries, it does not mean destroying physical enemies. Rather it refers to victory of evil, such as Lucifer. Since we believe that all evil comes from Hell and darkness, we pray for the victory of the light (God). A lot of what is said in the back and forth is not literal but spiritual for lack of better words. We are all equal in God's eyes. We should not judge one another. We should pray that a person makes good choices and is guided by the light rather than belittle them for something we see as wrong.
