The man who suffered a concussion I feel so sorry for, I have been around people who had concussions and have seen the ways it can change ones life, what's worse is how often there's still lucidity and someone is completely aware to mostly aware of who they were, their prior levels of cognition, they suddenly have to rework parts of themselves from the ground up and possibly learn masking techniques. I wish the best for him, the worker that is, and hope he can get good care and therapy in his life.

It honestly sounds like the man might have suffered more than a concussion. I know concussions can be mild to serious, but it might be a different name for what this man suffered. He specifically used brain injury and perhaps his skull was fractured or partly smashed, which can cause extreme damage to someone's cognition as well as motor functions. I just think he probably suffered and injury beyond a concussion. Not to nit pick or down play concussions, just that from the sound of it, and knowing a bowling ball was dropped onto his head, it makes me think he was nearly killed by the incident.

As someone who has had a few concussions I can say it does change you. How much and for how long varies. Never the less they are no joke. First one I hit my head in a tunnel at McDonald's as a kid. Second was a disc golf disc at terminal velocity. They weigh over 150 grams and it came straight down on my head. I had been drinking and this was the worst headache I've ever had except for catching the modern plague this year. The third was when I got robbed, pistol whipped and had my head thrown through a wall. I still have a picture of that hole somewhere. My adrenaline was racing so hard it didn't hurt for about 8 hours.

In Nottingham they deal with so much insane crap that I don't imagine this would have pinged on the judge's radar until it was too late. Literally last year, I was walking home and a man came screaming out a car park with an axe. I walked past, got home and locked the door. Found out later he'd run into the town centre and struck an elderly man with it. Since the old man didn't die from the injuries, axe guy was let off; it apparently wasn't his first time doing it either. Nottingham has some of highest unemployment and homelessness rates in the UK, and a massive problem with crime and drugs (literally used to be known as "Shottingham"). The bar for arrest, especially around the City, is _very_ high.

There used to be a guy with mental health issues (I never really knew what exactly since he lived REALLY far away from my block) who would always walk around my neighborhood, he would tell people stuff like he was being hunted by the C.I.A. accusing them of being agents, or trying to pick fights saying it was because they were gay, etc; the guy could be very intimidating at times since he was 1 meter 80 cm. One day i was coming back from work and he engaged me saying i was a C.I.A spy and got really violent, i'm a big guy myself but didn't wanna get in a fight with him, so i decided to go along with him and started telling him that yes, i was a spy but i was leaving the agency because i knew he'd find me out; his behavior did a 180 almost instantly, he went from wanting to kick my ass to being very friendly with me. Interesting video most of it I was aware of. I ran forbidden planet in Nottingham for a number of years in which we had countless threats and thefts from him. I’ve had further interactions with him on public transport where he’s tried to show my children drugs and been aggressive. Having had countless interactions and heard from other retailers and people working in the city centre everyday, I have always felt that the police failed to protect the public consistently. They would often pick him up like he was a bumbling old drunk the town new sort of thing when in reality so many of the issues involved violent threats etc. fundamentally though the parents failed clearly and whilst sympathetic to that side, any act that alters another persons life the way he did the council worker, looses any compassion I have for the individual.

I don't necessarily feel bad for him - realistically, there is only so much the state can do for severely mentally ill folks; they can lock them up institutionally, but if not then you can't exactly force someone to take their meds or go to their therapy if they don't want to. @@SioxerNikita sorry in advance for the long reply. but TL-DR is basically you're right, we cant expect everyone to learn everything and no noone should put themselves in a situation they don't feel safe or comfortable, but speaking from experience, a gesture as simple as showing you're not scared of them like everyone else or just not treating them like a freak like everyone else can go along way towards helping them. what you say is true but common decency and actual equality instead of the counterproductively gendered equality radfems keep pushing, goes along way. am i saying everyone should go out of their way to try and be a therapist to the local mentally ill? hell no. if you're not a professional its likely to end badly. but like those couple people said. he was ok behind closed doors and if you showed him you weren't scared of him he was less of a freak. if we just treated people like equals instead of making everyone different from the societal norm feel like they need to be scared of us even if they haven't done anything directed directly towards us people would be alot more likely to get help. like seriously, ask yourself why most people who find themselves in a somewhat similar situation to damion have always been men? cause society has always made it blatantly obvious they dont care about us or what we need in the slightest unless we do something drastic. i know that sounds extreme but from what ive seen and experienced in my life its true. thankfully thats starting to change in many places,and people are starting to be given equal treatment and concern for their mental illness no matter thier gender identity. but ive seen so many stories like this where people have gone insane and ended up killing or almost killing people and its been blatantly obvious they're crying for help for months if not years but it took them doing something ridiculously drastic for anyone to give a shit. but in the end they still get treated like a common criminal instead of being given that help they need. like i know the argument is always "if they needed help why didnt they just get it" when alot of the time like you said it comes down to many factors, maybe they were conditioned not to ask for help, maybe they feel they cant trust going alone, maybe they dont know where to start, maybe they cant afford it, maybe they dont have the confidence to. cause i can speak from personal experience, as someone that at one point in their life desperately wanted to go on a rampage and shed the blood of others, society often thinks life and making decisions or taking action especially on mental health is so much easier than it is. but its hard as hell especially when alot of these people seem to grow up in situations where they're made to feel like they should hate themselves for even being born. for example, i was an outcast to everyone. constantly told i was worthless by almost everyone including my parents, told to KMS multiple times a day by just about everyone in school cause of shit i couldn't control, return home to be degraded and blamed for literally everything cause i was born with ADHD (like legit thats it. thats why society including my own parents felt i should be dead). always used to think i had that aggressive nightmare kinda version you always see on the fear mongering news headlines about ADHD. but have come to terms twith the realisation it more a case of all the bottled up emotions constantly spilling over and me instinctively taking it out on everyone else (i physically couldn't control myself during my outbursts) instead of taking it out in the form of self harm. at some point you give up caring, turn cold and distant, stop trying to control or stop outbursts from the constantly overflowing bottle and realise you cant trust anyone or feel safe anywhere. you dont seek help cause in the back of your mind youre assuming theyll treat you like everyone else, or just throw you on seemingly random drugs to artificially make things better instead of actually helping your mental state. you start acting much like damien did at the start, just acting weirder in the hopes people will at the very least leave you the hell alone for once. there was multiple times i was at my snapping point where i grabbed knifes and questioned weather to do everyone a favor and use them on myself, or whether to give them what they deserve and use them on others. it was ridiculously obvious both at school and at home i wasnt mentally well... i purposely made it clear... cause i was hoping someone had the balls or cared enough to offer the help i didnt have the confidence or trust to get myself. legit, it took me writing extremely concerning fb posts threatening to do some of the things that had been running through my mind for 2-3 years at that point and someone from my school seeing that and reporting it to one of my teachers for anyone to give half a shit. granted the councillor couldn't do much when they forced me to go a couple of times cause there was still that thought of "i cant open up itll probs be used against me" and "how do i know i can trust them, how do i know they arent like everyone else" so i couldn't open up and just gave purposely vague answers so i wouldn't have to deal with potential arguments at hope or anything else. but even just sitting there in the quiet one on one still helped more than i could realise at the time. being next to someone who doesnt treat you like you're a burden on society that never should've been born. and the fact they didn't just immediately give up when i wouldnt communicate and let me sit there for a bit and get a break for the hell scape that was school... i didnt realise it at the time but they became one of the few people i felt i could trust at that shithole, even tho i never opened up she was one of the very very few people i was always happy to see on the school grounds. sooo yea, while youre right we cant expect everyone to learn everything and we cant expect everyone to feel safe in every situation, just showing someone you aint scared of them or arent gonna treat them like everyone else does goes a long way to helping people like damion. and could give them that confidence or trust boost they need to ask for help. of course dont put yourself in an unsafe situation or anything but like yea, showing that kinda bit of kindness or equality or whatever, could be that one little gesture that makes them rethink doing something drastic and taking everyone around them along for the shitshow.

I can't think of a solution that doesn't involve open ended institutionalisation, and I'm guessing that people who are mad about him being in prison wouldn't like that much better. One of the problems with our attitude towards mental health is that people often fail to see the person through the illness. Thx for this video. Your work is going a long way into helping raise awareness for this issue, because, as good as Joker 2020 was, people move on and forget, especially if it doesn't concern them personally. Mental health still has ways to go, not just in the medical domain. 70 years ago we lobotomised patients in need of help, we've improved since then as a society, but not nearly enough if you look at the timeframe. For instance: higher ups at many corporations still don't deem mental healthcare to be something they should encourage/provide to their workers, because according to them, it doesn't boost productiveness. It's truly a saddening thing, and I hope us new generations will be more sensible as a whole to this issue, so we can force change.

On the other side you have the people happy to go along with it because they believe in working as a team and trade freedoms for community and comfort. It’s individualism vs community. @@FTZPLTC I suspect if you were in his situation you would do the same. It's been proven beyond and rational standard that most crimes, especially the type he was convicted of, folk do because of a poor quality of life be it due to being homeless, going through a health crisis and needing money if in somewhere like the USA, being in poverty and facing raising rent/bills and addiction (which is a health issue and should be treated as such) that isn't to say that makes it right or even OK but that doesn't make you a bad person. I know many folk with records who are really nice folk and wouldn't hurt anyone without feeling threatened themselves but life has been hard and they made some mistakes. It's also the fact most folk didn't have to put up with him if you actually read my comment I'm clear most folk just avoided him and let him be. He was also very much treated as a criminal reguardless of how acted, which when that happens and you don't have any support it's very easy to just think that's what you are supposed to do and all you are good at. @Lenariet
@Lenariet 2 жыл бұрын
The persona one embraces can but needn't be an indication of something. People cosplay weird or outright evil characters all the time, but only a tiny fraction actually acts erratically or like that persona. Even this guy sometimes seemed to have done relatively "normal" things too that random weirdos in the public tend to do like... well... asking for money. But being somewhat loud and such... or giving people unpleasant stares and stuff... even that isn't totally uncommon, not around where I live anyway. So essentially it's hard to tell where "random, weird homeless guy" starts and "random, genuinely dangerous guy" ends. Knowing the previous offenses of someone can help, but I don't have such information readily available on the weirdos that I run into in public. Also, in the case of The Joker, that character is so well-known and popular that if I ran into someone looking like that I'd take him - at first glance anyway - simply for an eccentric fan. So really, in many cases you need way more information on somebody to judge them fairly as far as their personality and potential danger to society goes, the portrayed persona alone tells you little to nothing in a society where some believe it to be cool and edgy to mimick evil characters.

I'm not saying he didn't actively refuse to take them simply for not wanting to, but something many people don't take into consideration with severe mental illness is the fact that your reality is likely nothing like what most people see. That medication could've been poison to him as far as he knows, as he did seem to deal with some intense paranoia. Paranoia is very common in many mental illnesses (I suffer from bipolar, PTSD, and so on and many of them lead to paranoid thoughts and some delusions in stressful times). I feel like you and many others are taking in this information under the assumption that he has the same level of wherewithal that most typically healthy people do. That's just not the case at all, sadly.

> What is "society" supposed to do? Here's a hint: how about *not* letting a dangerous and unstable individual run free for over a decade? After a couple of incidents and convictions it should've been clear that this man was a threat to himself and others. Just ignoring that and applying the typical "out of sight, out of mind"-mentality (i.e. banning him from the city centre) is part of the reason things got this bad. > Why doesn't he have personal responsibility? For the same reason small children and drug addicts don't have (full) personal responsibility - their minds don't work well enough to allow them to. With children the reason is undeveloped brains, with mentally ill people and drug addicts it's broken minds - be that due to chemical damage from substance abuse, neurological issues, or a combination of both. I've had a friend of mine (brilliant guy) go down the path of mental issues and believe me, it's *very* hard to deal with (especially since friends and distant family have basically no legal power to do something) and *incredibly* easy to just abandon them and let them end up in a horrible situation and a downward-spiral. These people are simply incapable of getting control over their lives back and without outside help they are doomed to end up like the guy in the video. Luckily my mate had good friends who didn't give up on him and finally agreed to get temporarily institutionalised and get the help and medication he needed. Took almost two years, but he got better and made a full recovery. You simply *cannot* make any rational decisions if your mind is messed up (be that from drug abuse or due to medical issues).

"Society failed to help". Well, I'm of an opinion that you can only help someone who wants to be helped. We don't know the details of this man's interactions with healthcare workers. It's quite possible that he was given many opportunities to take a path towards a better life and just flat out rejected them.

Judging by the fact he was prescribed medicine it's all his fault it went the way it did. Society merely paid the price for not forcing him to take it.
@ElysetheEevee
@ElysetheEevee 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know. It's true we don't know how the interactions went. Saying it's "all his fault" and that "you can only help someone who wants to be helped" is partially true. However, people need to remember that personal reality for a lot of mentally-Ill people is severely different, and usually darker, than what others see. If you don't have the capacity to see the information as a source of help and care, and instead your delusions cause your perception to be that the authorities are trying to kill you, and that was literally your entire life, would you take them like you'd pop supplements in the morning? Perception is such a weird but all-encompassing thing. If your reality is so absolutely twisted that you can't see the things put in front of you as "help" and not "harm", then how would you effectively help yourself? You wouldn't. I'm not making excuses if he did just flat out refuse to take them while truly knowing what they were for. I'm simply giving an insight into how reality can be for those with severe paranoia and delusions. I've suffered paranoid episodes due to some of my stuff. Nothing that was quite as severe as some with schizophrenia suffer from, but enough to morph what I saw into something I wouldn't have normally accepted as reality. It's really difficult to imagine the full brunt of how this life would be for those who haven't experienced it in these specific cases. So you can make judgements and say you'd do things a certain way, but you just really don't know what you'd do. It doesn't take much at all to complete change how a person's brain interprets their reality. It really doesn't and that's the scariest part.

@@ElysetheEevee Good comment. But what to do then? Clearly we can't have such individuals just roaming the streets freely, can we? Not if they are headed the direction this one was. Not sure if you caught what you quoted or not... but "failed to help" usually means something bad happened, nobody did anything, and now it's too late for them. Any help offered to them would have been after the "failed to help" part, making it pretty moot to this guy, since... well, whatever happened, happened.
