I am back in Nottingham!
After my last visit, it was clear that I missed the centre of the city. So I returned, this time with a local who said he would show me round.
It was great to return with someone who knew details about the place, who wasn't afraid to shy away from the problems that there are. There are a lot of boarded up shops and empty units. You cannot deny that. But it was also great to see the busy parts of the city.
Huge thanks to Rob for inviting me back.
Until Next Time,
W.T

Thanks so much for accepting my invite and coming back for a second look! I hope I didn't get any of my history wrong. Sorry to people who know better, if I did. It's been a long time (clearly) since GCSE History for me. Seeing you recognised on more than one occasion was a real buzz, this series clearly means a lot to people. And the best thing about KZbin is that it's interactive and a comment like the one I left can inspire a second visit. I expect you will be getting a lot of invites in future! If you want to come back some day and do a 'cheapest houses in Nottingham' that might also be a good one and I'd be happy to help. Cheers, Rob @ForestFanTV

I absolutely love Nottingham! I never lived there but, since the 90's, I've visited Rock City countless times as I regard it as the best place to see a band in the whole of the UK. They also used to do a fantastic rock / indie club night in the 90's that I'd drive well over 100 miles to attend. Not to mention that Nottingham has SO many cracking good pubs. I'm afraid I don't get there as often as I'd like to nowadays but I always look forward to my next visit. 🙂

As teenagers we used to drive from London to Nottingham at the weekends just to party. I know Rock City well. Had great pubs too as you say. But it ain't the best place to see a band. I think I only like it really cos I saw my fave gig ever while being able to drink a beer. That and the history I guess? Even though this place weren't the original it was still a great place. After that it moved a few doors down from Springfellows. Can't even remember where that is but I did pop my head in briefly and take a walk around when it was closed. It looked OK. Grew up in Derbyshire, and Derby was 'the city' we went to. As an adult, I always think Derby squandered every opportunity to be another Nottingham/York. A flat, historic city, surrounded by gods country on all sides. It has the bones for it. It's already a transport hub, basically every train ever goes through Derby station - but all for naught, because its all charity shops, barbers and shitty chain bars. Living in Nottingham, I can go to 10 bars and not have been in a single chain pub/green king etc. In derby, that might be impossible. I don't know what the Derby city council are smoking but it's some bad shit for the last 30 years. Then the racists.... My god. Went there with some friends, never before seen the abuse they got for being 'foreigners'.

I knew the local you were meeting was legit when you said you were meeting at the left lion ;) Really happy to see you did come back to give Nottingham a second chance. I did find myself shouting at the screen last time, urging you to get to market square and viccy center. Nottingham is a beautiful bohemian city that reeks of history and culture, and whilst so much of it has fallen into decline, I've always been surprised by the resiliance of high street small businesses. Viccy centers market is the only living remnant of the 1000 year old market that gave the market square its name, and the nut salesman you met is one of the only remaining traders of that tradition left. A living legend! I spent my childhood eating mushy peas in that market with my mum, that you filmed being so completely desolate, which gave me a lump in my throat. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your efforts to explore the decline of this countries city centers. Nottingham often gets forgotten, so thanks for including us in your journey! He is right that Nottingham only includes the inner cities and not the surrounding Boroughs which is part of Greater Nottingham - 2 of the boroughs Gedling and Rushcliffe are some of the best places to live in the UK. Nottingham city centre in the 80s and 90s was thriving and booming. Seeing Broadmarsh and Lister Gate these days really saddened me but still have the Old Market Square, Hockley, Lace Market and Victoria Centre around. The city definitely has a thriving student population as well.

Thank you so much for revisiting my city and restoring my faith! I left 20 years ago and have never been back, and when I saw your last video, well, you broke my heart! But I am so grateful you went back, and your guide could not have been better. I hope everyone who watches this can get the idea of how lovely Nottingham can be.

I'm so happy you came back because other than your jaunt into Hockley which is a genuinely incredible area which is basically only independent shops and cafes/restaurants you did paint a bad picture. Thanks for the do over, shows you are committed to being genuine

Great video. Ex Nottm lad here. I'm retired and living in Lincs now, left in 1979 to join the UK forces. I still like to go back occasionally. Was gutted when I found that Broad Marsh Centre was all closed down, but still love the Vicky Centre and the Market Square part. I drive to the park and ride, then catch the tram in when I spend the day there, I love to ride those trams and chat to all the local people on them, always find them friendly.

I loved Nottingham I have been back a few times since being a student and I do recall Saint Mary’s church was black I do have some pictures. I loved the old industrial part of nottm, great to see a young chap explore the old and new of Nottingham. You got me hooked now! Lol😊 Isn't Rob such a mindful of the history of Nottingham? Thank you and I look forward to your next city. Ps. I recall the Victoria market in my day was packed it was the go-to place for your fruit and veg and material for the summer ball gown. Thanks again! 😊

Thanks for both videos. They’re a great illustration of the tale of two halves playing out in Nottingham. I live on the outskirts and rarely venture into the city, so I guess I’m a contributing factor in the retail decline we’ve seen there. Bringing life back to such spaces in a way that will last, given how we all work, shop and live these days, is one hell of a conundrum.
