This place was really incredible when it was thriving. I lived in Salton City a pebbles throw from the sea. I was a young girl at the time. My parents decided to move away when I was about 10 years old. I have so many memories, especially of summer time. Campers, camp fires on the beach, boaters, water skiers and fishing.

My name is John,I grew up at the Salton Sea ,from the time I was 11 or twelve til I was in my 20's. My cousins,friends and I have a lot of great and fond memories of growing up there. We fished ,waterskied,I even sailed across it twice ,once in a 10 foot Sailboat,and once in a 14 foot Sailboat. It's very peaceful out there in a nice breeze,quiet by yourself. I hope to do it again one day. We used to swim in it a lot also,never saw one snake in the water.(referring to one of the comments made here). I wouldn't recommend swimming in it now tho,it's not the same as it used to be. We used to wear tennis shoes,so we wouldn't cut our feet on the barnacles,or whatever else was in there. I wish they would do something about the sea. I think the canal to the gulf would be fantastic. The sea is 2-1/2 hour drive from Orange County,and 2 hours from San Diego. It would be a weekend paradise,and create a lot of financial opportunity, and property values would go up. It could generate revenue for California and the locals,instead of generating negative impact ,and opinions. Anyway,thank-you Bea for your video,it brings back good memories, I wish I could take you to lunch.

A lost childhood and a beautiful sea gone to waste. John, this place stinks to high heaven. Sad, sad, sad, it didn't have to be that way. But, uncontrolled waste, pesticides and sewage has ruined it. This place is so huge. Who would flip the bill for fixing it, go fund me? Those barnacles bottom side, do you think they were created "naturally? I seriously doubt it. Studies show that a higher level of decay as a result of man's added toxins are the result. I hypothesize that our government is using this sea as a test site for a future money making project.

over & over we mess with the ecosystem when we don't know what we are doing. This video failed to mention that this sea formed this time not just because the Colorado river flooded, but because agriculture had created channels for irrigation. We could try to fix it, but what damage will we do elsewhere as a result? We are so stupid. But we think we are so smart.

The Colorado river use to flow to the Gulf of California. Than the sediment would block the flow it filled up the area where the Sultan sea is now. It over flowed than formed a channel back to the Gulf of Mexico. Now with man taking so much water from the Colorado river it would never take a natural course again.

What needs to be done to the Salton Sea is a partition dam with a spill way. One side would become a salt lake, growing fresher over time, fed by ag runoff as always. The other side would become a Salt sump, perhaps the salt could be put to use by industry

Almost 5 years later I see it is doing what I believe this lake should return to is natural dry lake bed and it is evaporating at an alarming rate. Warning this lake is not the lake it was in 1969 through 1972 while I was a child visiting here over 100 times and later living in Palm Springs for another later 18 years. About 6:00 minutes in the fear factor begins the children the Asthma the toxic dust and so on. If see evaporates at a slow geological rate over decades this will be fine if you are sensitive about breathing then a desert is never the place for you to be to start with. Yes leaving it alone is the right thing to do. History about me. I am 81 husband is 83 we have 3 children male mid fifties to early 60's, we have eaten the fish ever sense, only place to get them that we know and we are all alive healthy and well, so what is the health issue even now as the evaporation is accelerating at a rate that no regulations to pass in California (tough rules state) are going to catch up with, so in my opinion sit back and enjoy the lake bed while nature reclaims (no money in that thought) this great and vat dry lake bed just like the one in Twentynine Palms and the main death Valley have today.

Yes, this is true, and nobody is denying this. The problem is that after all these years, a whole infrastructure of birds has moved in and take their sustenance from the sea. And, perhaps more than that, if the sea dries, it will release toxins into the air and become a biohazard to potentially millions of people. So, whether or to it started as a man-made fiasco, the onus is now on us to make sure there is no destruction in its wake.

When you think about it, it's amazing it's that deep when it's 35 miles long, with water from a flood that happened in 1905!

This is sure a positive spin. I find the place to be disgusting, dead fish and birds everywhere, abandoned houses. 🤔

@@travelvideotv Yes I'm not doubting that it needs attention. I'm trying to say that your video is deceptive and makes it seem nicer than it is in reality.

@@joez3706 I don't think my video is deceptive. I enjoy the beautiful aspects of the Salton Sea, but also point out the problems. I love kayaking there. I agree the housing in the area is not very elegant, but not everyone has a lot of money.

@@travelvideotv You are certainly entitled to your opinion. Mine is that the place is a dump.
@Juneisthebestmonth5 жыл бұрын
@@joez3706 It is a dump, and if you go kayaking in there, you had better shower quickly thereafter. There is a lot of uncharacterized military waste, heavy metals and their salts and pesticides along with toxic strains of algae. If you brought the water anywhere else, it would have to be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Why can’t they drill for seawater to add to it
@travelvideotv3 жыл бұрын
I believe that is one of the proposed multi-billion dollar solutions.
@Juneisthebestmonth3 жыл бұрын
That is an engineering impossibility as it is in an active earthquake zone and below sea level. Makes that a hard stop. There is no sea water under the Imperial Valley - it is a magma zone with geothermal activity. And none can come from the ocean due to salt water cannot travel over a fresh water aquifer. And a pipeline of ocean water is impossible. Does not exist anywhere.

I've always proposed a canal system from the gulf of Mexico that helps keep the Salton Sea at the appropriate level. The Mexicans should have no problem with allowing this because of the migratory birds that both countries depend on. It should be a money maker also. The water would be flowing downhill about 140 feet which could generate electricity. It could also possibly be a money maker in that the gulf of Mexico would provide better water that might increase the quality of the Salton Sea, making it a tourist attraction again where people want to play and live.
@travelvideotv4 жыл бұрын
I have heard that idea proposed before. I have also driven along the northern parts of the Sea of Cortes and note that its levels are going down also. What would this idea do to the Sea of Cortes?
@BrianD1464 жыл бұрын
@@travelvideotv good question. I'm not a ocean ographer, but the Sea of Cortez there is kind of stagnant as well. siphoning water from there to the Salton Sea would bring in in essence more fresh ocean water making that area of the Sea of Cortez Less stagnant
@Juneisthebestmonth4 жыл бұрын
That is impossible for a number of engineering reasons. You cannot have a saltwater canal that runs below sea level through an earthquake zone. That completely vetoes that issue. Even if allowed, the water would silt out and clog up the canal. And you cannot have a saltwater canal over a freshwater aquifer unless it is perfectly lined and kept perfectly clean and never leak (in an earthquake zone????). Even if free, it would be impossible. Certainly not to add salty water to a Mistake Lake that most people want to be emptied out.
@BrianD1464 жыл бұрын
It would actually be good for the Sea of Cortez bringing in more fresh water from the open ocean. Earthquakes are a non-issue. obviously if there's a gigantic quake you have to deal with construction but you have gate valves to shut off the water if needed. Plus the water needs to be pumped up hill about 135 ft before it goes downhill to about 250 ft below sea level. So it's not like we're going to all of a sudden have to Sea of Cortez just pouring into the Central Valley if there's a gigantic earthquake. Saltwater from the ocean is a non-issue because this isn't finally tuned machinery like a circuit board. There's always maintenance on a canal, and that cost is minimal
@Juneisthebestmonth4 жыл бұрын
@@BrianD146 I can tell that you have limited or zero experience in civil engineering and geology and costing of projects. I am not sure when the last time you applied for even a permit for something like a storages tank in this area. There is no sense having a discussion with someone who makes bizarre comments as you have. You have tossed aside 200 years of engineering knowledge and the entire permitting process used in California and the USA.

When was this video taken. The many videos on this You Tube show nothing but extremely horrible areas of decay and leftover human waste. The water shown on these videos doesn't look as vast as this video shows. The sea seems to be in danger of evaporating in a very short time. The loss of this sea seems imminent and so very sad.

I've live in the Coachella Valley my entire life, everytime I pass through the Lake, it amazes me how great it looks. The smell has only reach the valley a very few times. I've met people that hate the smell but that's because that was there first time smelling it. After a while you can't really tell unless it is really hot (110 degrees +). I have never done any research on the lake until now (I'm 22). It is very interesting to hear the story of the lake. I have only a question about it, if the cause of the water being contaminated was from agriculture, why doesn't the government or whoever is in charge of the lake go after the farm companies that cause the contamination and ask them to pay for the cleaning? They were the ones responsible. If I remember correctly, I've heard in the past two years that they are planning on cleaning it some time soon. Need to do more research to be accurate.

We went there on vacation once, because we had heard there was good fishing there. When we got there all these dead fish were floating on the water and the air was so full of sulfur that we had to leave within 15 minutes of even being there after a loonnggg drive, because it was bothering our lungs. It's not a good place to take your family to, it's very dirty and run down. Not a healthy environment you want to hang out in.

You are right - there are times when things are so bad there. It's an unfortunate mess, and dangerous to leave in its current state. Visiting it brings attention to it. Much of the time, it's perfectly safe, but when there is a "red bloom," it's a good time to stay away.
