The citizens and tribes of Chad and the Central African Republic have long reported sightings of a large cat with gigantic fangs. It is described as being a large tiger that lacks a tail. The fur is often sandy red or brown with white stripes and it has overly hairy legs and feet. What is the truth behind this mystery big cat?

i wish there were more cryptids that were "alleged surviving" mammalian mega-fauna, such as Andrewsarchus, Enteledontids, Sivatherium, Macrauchenia, Elasmotherium, Megaloceras, etc., buuutt, it seems people are more inclined to deem a poorly described animal in an account as "A Living dinosaur m8". I mean, why couldn't the Mokele-mbembe be a living derived Hyracodontid? One that could be more in line with size and geo-temporal range of the alleged beast?

I must play devils advocate on your completely rational and measured suggestion of a shared ancient memory; the tribal trackers and hunters that have apparently encountered this creature really would not either mistakenly identify a commonly known creature, nor would they blend the mythical into a live hunting scenario. To me that just doesn’t ring true. Another point to make is that our belief as individuals, cultures or as a global civilisation is not required for something hitherto conventionally unknown to actually exist. The giant panda being a perfect example. Peace

@@abhishekkulkarni9120 whilst I can certainly see numerous reasons why your original point is likely correct, I simply do not agree that one’s elders would present a mythical or a tribally recounted story from ancestral encounters as a naturally encountered creature. I would love for this creature to be real, sadly I think that even if it survived into the early 20th century, the likelihood now is that it would be on the brink of extinction, if not already gone. I think the weight of evidence is telling though. Usually when folklore describes mythic monsters, they are quite fantastic and obviously not real. This cat is so realistic. And it could easily hide up in the mountains where there must be very little exploration; it takes wildlife photographers weeks just to catch a glimpse of snow leopards, for example, and we know those are real - and more to the point, are actively going out to look for them. Maybe we should send David Attenborough out to Chad! I do think the comment about the restricted jaw opening is probably anecdotal however, maybe after seeing such long canines, the locals just can't believe such an animal would be able to bite. But I think there was a widespread Western myth surrounding sabre-tooths in the same vein.

There are actually some species where many humans didn't want to believe that those existed. The african unicorn living in jungles (Okapi) and the gorilla turned out to be real. Natives knew of those illusive animals but most european conqueror and explorers didn't want to believe them until they saw it for themselves. Some other illusive cryptic and mythical creatures turned out to be real too. Giant sea creatures in legends often turned out to be whales, giant squid or oarfish. But people rarely saw their full body except if they are washed up dead.

It was at about 300 yards, I was driving a van, it crossed the road and was only visible for about 10 seconds. It was definitely a cat and it was huge. I was not alone we both saw it and were both completely shocked. The biggest cat I have ever seen, but too far away to be that sure of the size. Note: it was very black, completely so. Mostly guessing but I would say at a minimum the size of a tiger, I think larger, but not as large as a liger. Too far to make out any saber teeth, but I don't think so.

He said, it kind of looked like a Mountain lion, but bigger, and gray fur. He always tried to buy the furs he seen, but everyone refused to sell. He got a few photos, which cost him, but they were useless. He said, "I was never so tempted to steal from the locals, but he wasn't one of those people. He said, by the end of the fifties, even the locals no longer talked about the gray cats. Yeah, I don't remember the guys name. That's whats wrong with books. They almost never occur outside captivity but the Ennedi Tiger sounds a bit like a leopon (a lion/leopard hybrid.) They’re very big (closer to the size of the lion), melanism IS a possibility & leopards have massively powerful necks & like to stash their kills in trees. And their ranges do overlap. The teeth don’t fit but if I was surprised by a huge shaggy cat I’d probably exaggerate the size of the teeth too. Also, unlike most big cat hybrids leopons are apparently fertile most of the time.

Bearing in mind eDNA shows the mammoth survived in Siberia until 4,000 years ago, the time of the great pyramid and Stonehenge, and earliest surviving texts. So whether a sabre toothed felid survived into modern times in Africa seems doubtful but in Asia, considering the mammoth was thought to have died out in the ice age though we now know it survived until much later, it’s plausible that a population of sabre tooth felids too survived there up to 2,000 BCE or so and the occasional sighting of such a dramatic and imposing animal entered into folklore, passed down in oral tradition to more recent times as a still extant creature.

depends on the fossils and the age. Most vertebrate fossils past a few million years are fossilized as river debris. Its exceedingly rare to find a complete skeleton or even a bone. Normally, you find the equivalent of a 1000 pc jigsaw puzzle. Some biomes are better than others. If you are looking for a cat living in a mountainous area, changes are almost zero for fossil preservation UNLESS it is found in a cave. Caves have a history of being used and reused by wildlife and people AND sometimes are subject to flash floods, meaning everything is washed to some part of the cave and settles in the same sedimentary layer. Australia has one cave in particular where the bones are bones and not fossils and very old; highly unusual. Anyways, if you are interested in more, let me know.

First off just to be pedantic, if this exists it's absolutely not a Smilodon. Smilodon was restricted to the Americas. However it may be a descendant of megantereon, which was widespread in Africa and Eurasia, and had a very heavy build and short tail. The only thing making be doubt it is the lack of specimens. Some pinhead in a pith helmet would have absolutely shot one during the colonial era if they were out there. Most likely it's a local legend of "What if ion, but bigger teeth?" that westerners then tacked onto sabertooth cats.

If it exists. It may not be a Smilodon but an animal related to African big cats that went through convergent evolution. As far as is known. The Smilodon's range was North and South America and did not extend to Africa

It seems to me, it would be worth someone's while, to go there, and try to obtain evidence of this cryptids existence. Trail cameras in North America take pictures of bears, cougars, wolves, and many other wildlife. I think they could be a way to gather evidence of these creatures, if they exist. Perhaps a resident of that area could be given some trail cameras with which to do the job?

Unlikely. Sabertooth tigers aren't stealthy animals at all they run down prey and slice them open with their fangs. They would be more clumsy than most big data thanks to their tails. From what I know I can't imagine one sneaking around since its fangs aren't suited for stealth attacks like a jaguar

Since this purported lion/tiger shares it’s habit and prey animals with other known living creatures that haven’t gone extinct there’s no logical reason this animal should have gone extinct either. Nature is notoriously fair.

@dondragmer2412

Bobcats are good at killing porcupines. But though most sabretooths were bobtailed they were not bobcats. At the zoo I worked in we had a lioness named Bobbie because she had been an illegal pet and her cruel owner had chopped most of her tail off when she was a cub. She was a character; loved to get up on a tree limb overhanging the road where tourists drove and I enjoyed pointing her out to the tourists, otherwise they would never have seen the lion hanging right over their cars. Enabled them to get great photos of her.

The partly retractable claws are a characteristics of the cheeta, a closely related feline to the sabertooth familly (it can't mix with other feline at all, unlike tigers, jaguars and lions) and Africa is considered to have the most preserved Megafauna of all continents, prefered prey to the saber-tooth predators; its main menace to its survival would have been humans, and only specimens smart enough to hide and avoid the hominids would have survived...
@gaz-atolla7519
@gaz-atolla7519 2 жыл бұрын
While partly retractable claws are a characteristic of cheetahs it's incorrect to say they are "very closely related" to the sabre-toothed cats While sabre-toothed cats are part of the true cats family (Felidae) they are their own distinct sub-family (Machairodontinae) while all living cat species belong to either the sub-families Felinae or Pantherinae The Machairodontinae branched off from a shared ancestor (fossil evidence puts the best current guess at Felidae Pseudaelurus) apx 20 million years ago meaning that the sabres are no more closely related to cheetahs than they are any other existing cat species What has always amazed me though is that cheetahs and cougars are more closely related to the common house cat than the vast majority of extant felines

The Ennedi plateu is a very undiscovered area, its not in the congo its in Chad. The fact that there are no evidence for its existence doesnt mean it cant exist. I dont think there was anyone looking for it, and if someone did and didn't found it that doesnt mean anything. There are a lot of foxes in europe but you dont see them very often either, given the remotness and size of the area it lives in, and its nocturnal behavior its not a surprise there is no evidence.

The natives have lived in the area for thousands of years. As usual, sad to say, Europeans have to tell the people what they have seen or not seen. In India leopards and tigers have become maneaters from time to time. Can the natives solve the problem? Of course not! European great white hunters have to be brought in to put down these beasts. No wonder why Rudyard Kipling wrote about "...the white man's burden."
