The standard and professional series both have identical electronics, hardware, and frets. I went with the RSS20 (black)and RSS02 (sunset burst) which seem to me the biggest bang for the buck as they say. Both guitars are rock solid and stable. I love the way they feel and sound. Lefties have a choice of either RSE20L Element or RSS20L Standard in Swift Blue or Black - both with humbuckers. I have a lefty RSS20L (Standard with humbuckers) in Swift Blue. The gig bag that comes with the Standard is of a high quality, and the factory fitted Elixir strings are also premium. Only upgrade I am planning is fitting a set of Gotoh locking tuners. For info, the new Revstars have 10mm post holes so a set of Gotoh SG301 Magnum Locking Tuners MGT4 in Chrome should fit nicely. Hi Jay, thanks a lot for this nice review of the Revstars! At the moment I only play a Strat and think about buying a second type of guitar, probably a Humbucker one as it differs more from normal single coils. My question: did you make (or think about to make 😉) a comparison between a Humbucker Revstar with a Gibson LP standard- in terms of characteristics, playability etc. Should one first purchase a classical (Gibson) LP to have that typical LP sound in his/her line up before complementing the selection of guitars? Cheers Jürgen
@JayLeonardJ Жыл бұрын
I find the older Revstar to be a bit closer to the Gibson LP than the newer style. The newer Revstars trade in some of the bark of the LP for more clarity and tightness. That being said, your personal selection of guitars should be based on the gear that works with you and speaks to you: I have a wonderful collection but mine is also missing a Les Paul.

Yamaha are FINALLY realising: 1. They don’t have to copy American guitars. 2. They need to stop using the hideous headstock design and YAMAHA logo. Hopefully they’ll also realise that their own traditional Japanese art and design is the coolest on the planet and they should incorporate that into their future guitars. From their historical samurai culture to their modern Manga design they could revolutionise guitar desirability for a younger market. Imagine how many young female guitarists would be saving up to buy a re-worked Fender ‘paisley’ style, but using their pattern silks or jet black lacquered inlay? Really hoping this new direction from Yamaha continues. BTW just bought a Standard with buckers in sunburst!😎

Good thought. Maybe the electronics needed for their different switch functions and pickup voicings may also contribute to that difference as well.

I don't think so, at least not in terms of the type of wood making any difference, but would be interested in reading any outline of the manner in which it would be affecting the induced current in the coil of the pickup which we hear after being amplified and sent through the loudspeaker. At the same time, it could possibly be simply that the pickups sit higher with the maple top and that makes them brighter. Lots of things could create the tone difference, but I doubt it is the type of wood.

I had the same dilema but ended up ordering the RSS20. The Pro model was more than twice the price of the standard in Canada (999.99$ vs 2199.99$) and I couldn't justify that difference with made in japan, carbon rods in body, IRA treatment and hard shell case. Personally I couldn't care less where it's made as long as it's well made. I have some great Indonesian guitars that compare favorably to U.S or Japan made instruments. The other extra features just don't seem to be worth it. To me they seem a bit gimmicky or things that won't make much of a difference.

Feels almost impossible to justify the pro model considering the steep jump in cost. Seems like you’re paying almost 3 times the price for some carbon rods and slightly better QC…..why is it still tempting though!?
