Please do a video on Robert Curthose! There is little about him despite his role in the first crusade and his role in Normandy and his rebellions against his father and younger brother, respectively.
These are great documentaries! I love this narrator, and I enjoy the great information in them. I am yet to listen to one that I don’t learn things I was unaware of. ❤

I never cared for William the Conqueror, however, he introduced a high tax on slavery which effectively ended the practice in Britain, perhaps making England the first country in the history of the world to eliminate slavery. Maybe it was the only one good thing he did.

Meanwhile, the English created slavery in the USA and savaged the peoples of Africa and Ireland to do it. Modern slavery flourishes in England now as human trafficking of all types, so hardly eliminated. Merely controlled on one patch of land temporarily.

If Henry had plotted to murder Rufus he would’ve had everything he needed to install him as king set to go and not have rushed off leaving his brother’s body where he fell. He probably wouldn’t have even been there either. This is a great series! I’ve watched many documentaries about English monarchy and this one is more in-depth. I especially enjoyed learning more about William Rufus. Most documentaries gloss over Rufus; usually, they go from him being crowned king to killed in the forest within a few minutes.

If you use math and divide it out, William the conqueror lived 47 generations ago... Which would make him your 45th or 46th great-grandfather. (2024-1066=958. Divide that by 20, (the approximate length of a generation) and you get 47.9 (that's how many generations in the past he lived)

Maybe it depends on if "They" set up shop on our "ancient landfill."

The problem is Edward couldn't make William his heir. And there would be no reason to invite a foreign heir when there were plenty viable closer heirs. England had an elected throne. The king could RECCOMEND his heir. But not decide it. So Harold was rightfully elected king.

I first learned of the anarchy through the book "Pillars of the Earth". I always struggled with who i felt was at fault, but after watching this, i feel like the majority of blame can be laid at the feet of Henry I. he should have either gone with stephen full bore once the white ship incident happened, or gone with matilda in the same way. i think if he had made matilda somewhat of a coregent, the nobles would have accepted her by default since it was just a continuation.

William (Guillaume) wasn't entirely Viking. Rollo married a French noblewoman, and his son did the same. Moreover, William's wife was also of Norman origin. So, in the end, he likely had more French blood than Viking.

The Anarchy also known by monks of that era as "When Christ and His Saints Slept." Also the title of a fantastic historical fiction novel about this turbulent time by Sharon Kay Penman. If you're a fan of the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters, it was set in this time too. To think nobles went to war and caused so much destruction and disruption for the common people because they couldn't handle a woman on the throne. Turns out, Stephen wasn't that great of a king after all.
