After watching this video like 20 times... I’m also 99% positive he brought the official to the initial contact point not its final resting spot.. when he sets his ball down after picking it up he sets it down about 1.5 club lengths away from where he picked it up... and when he measures with his driver his relief position, Where he placed his ball is placed is approximately one club length away from what he says was the final resting spot but what was actually the initial contact point..

I just think he knowingly brought the judge to the wrong spot... the initial point of impact and NOT where it finally landed(about a foot or so away). The initial point of impact could show a pitch mark so by bringing the judge to that spot it falsely justified his decision to pick the ball up to get relief.

To the original poster very much agree... did you guys go back and watch The Telecast and clearly see the ball bounce at least two feet off of the rough after its original impact? no way this ball was embedded from dropping to feet off a bounce- absolutely no way! so what embedded impression in the ground was he feeling? it had to either be the initial impact or where he pressed the ball into the soft ground to embed himself... what's not being mentioned is the fact he went on to par this hole and sinking an 8-foot putt tremendously helped him expand on his lead... unbelievable this guy

You are perfectly entitled the mark and lift your ball without asking another player or a Referee. Very clear in Rule 16.4. Rule no different on Tour than playing a casual game when there is no referee.

In Rory's situation, he saw it was embedded and made his playing partners aware before proceeding. Sabbatini acknowledged to Rory that he saw it was embedded in a muddy area. Also part of 16.4 To lift the ball, a player must have reasonable belief that his ball is embedded. If the player lifts the ball without having this reasonable belief (except on the putting green where the player may lift under Rule 13.1b), he or she gets one penalty stroke. You are right that he can do that but in the video looks like he is pushing the ball down to make an impression in what was probably a perfectly obvious unembedded lie. And then all his actions after is classic liar behavior.

If there is disagreement, then an official should check it and make the final ruling. He didn't struggle in the least when picking his ball up, and didn't clean anything off of the ball before placing it in the other spot. The ball was clean, because it never plugged. If your ball goes into a pitch hole, that is not the same thing as a plugged ball.

I've been playing golf for 25 years...I've never had a ball embed after it's bounced. When I have a ball that's plugged I've brought over a playing partner to confirm that he's happy it's plugged before I lift. It's not good enough on the PGA tour that you can pick up a ball just after asking you're playing partners and the spotter if they saw it bounce. If that's the rule it needs to be changed ASAP. The rule should be that at least one playing partner should be satisfied that a ball is plugged before it's lifted, by physically seeing it....if there isn't agreement a tee should be placed next to the ball and the ball left there. A rules official should then be called and first it should be established if TV footage exists, if not the lie should then be assessed and only AFTER should the ball be lifted if required! You cannot accurately assess the lie after the balls been lifted, because 1) you can't guarantee the balls been put back in the same spot, and 2) even if it was you can assess whether pressure was applied to the ball to make it look like it's embedded

However, the video evidence shows otherwise that ball bounced and was not imbedded. He just had a bad lie in the rough. So how do you call it? Well, you have to take account his track record. If you look at the sand incident, that was blatant and he did it TWICE!!! Inexcusable. Dustin Johnson lost the US Open for the same infraction. There is no way around that it’s the facts. Patrick Reed pushed his ball into the ground to cause the ball to break the ground and he further poked around with it with his fingers to cause a further lip. he should have never touch the area that the ball was removed from before the rules official came. Patrick Reed is definitely a cheater and this isn't the first time that he's cheated. he should be fine and suspended.

Out of curiosity, when I played tournament golf, once I take the ball out and place it on the turf, that ball would be in play. The official saw his ball on the ground when he walked up and he still got a free drop? When did that change? Used to be that ball was in play once he tossed it near the cart path.

It didn’t embed in the first impact.... because it bounced.... he pressed it into the ground to create an indentation, then had the rules official stick his finger in the hole he just made himself.

@@ammon128 no it didn't embed but the original impact could have created a ball Mark even though it bounced.. just watch any approach shot into any green. they don't plug, but they always create a ball mark before they bounce Skip and stop on the Green... that's why we should always fix our ball marks but I never find my ball plugged actually in the ball mark itself... it normally bounces and checks up a few feet Beyond.. that's also why we carry ball Mark repair tools in our pockets No doubt P Reed Is a cheater but his this could have been the original impact or he could have pressed it into the ground we'll never know because his butt was in front of the camera blocking view... Definitely wasn't embedded or plugged though... Here we go again

Golf lost its integrity when it moved the PGA championship for 2022 from Trump National. That's when I cancelled the Golf Channel, whose commentator supported the move. Cancel the cancel culture. And where were all these holier than thou rule sticklers during the recent election fiasco. Maybe if you cared as much about democracy as you do about a stupid embedded ball, we would not be living in a country that is a swamp of corruption. Interesting also, how cowards love to kick a man who is down, when they are in a mob of idiots. That says a lot about character, and nearly all of these comments have shown their lack of character, as well as hypocrisy no doubt.

When your ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of your previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground. Your ball does not necessarily have to touch soil to be embedded (for example, grass and loose impediments may be between your ball and the soil). He was with in the rules

Where there's smoke, there's fire. Even if Reed hadn't cheated here (and, technically, the PGA says he didn't) he's built up a solid reputation with shady ethics and morals. He's always going to be looked at like he's trying to take unfair advantage. He's his own worst enemy.

Why did he ask if the ball bounced before he could even see his lie ? He was 10 yards away. I would think you would ask that question after you see your ball has plugged. He only called for a rules official after he realized he had a camera on him.

I know right. This is a key detail that no one is catching. He needed her answer to know what the cameras might have picked up and if anyone around could call him out. No matter how many suspicious things he did, he knew there would not be enough evidence to prove that he messed with the integrity of the lie in that long grass. He was smart enough to cover it up by gathering witnesses and by doing everything "within the rules".

You’re telling us that a ball that drops from basically 1.5ft onto an area of thick grass (an area that was firm enough to bounce the ball in the first place) has enough force behind it to break through the grass cover and go below the ground?
