I always thought that White was the leader of Providence, and he stayed in the armor so he wouldn't get infected with the E.V.O spores floating around, but now everything makes more sense, he doesn't come out because he's trapped and the armor is to help contain him (even though I don't think he's that dangerous). )

That is the case. When Six first found Rex and brought him in, White Knight and Dr Fell decided to try to experiment on him, trying to dissasemble him with a weapon they used to destroy other Evos (to learn more about his curing powers.) This failed as Six stopped it (or Rex did, I don't remember), this had the side effect of removing ALL the nanites in White Knight's body (because he was also in the dissasembly chamber for some reason), making him the only nanite free creature on earth. The suit (and the room he is always in) is meant to keep nanites out. I don't remember why they wanna keep White Knight nanite free, maybe it was explained and I forgot, who knows.

Somehow everyone who opposes Rex is the villain, as they always are, But if they support him, they become the good guys, while actually not, as they are planning to backstab and use Rex for themselves, While side characters, they are under mood swings, you never know what they are gonna do next, Eg - the scientists conducting namite project, just decided one day that it needs to have a main human controller, so decides to make Rex 'a kid' it's host, and giving the ultimate power in one hand, instead of spreading it.. But they died so they are good guys..
