For the price and function, I'd go Lange Saxonia. I much prefer their mix of printed markers and super thin indices to the Calatrava's printed markers or thicker indices. Plus, the exact saxonia match for the calatrava is ~€5.000 cheaper! For the 20.000, I'd get the saxonia thin in copper blue, one of the most gorgeous watches ever.
@TeddyBaldassarre5 жыл бұрын
As much as I love the Calatrava, I agree with you here based on my personal preference. And I TOTALLY agree on the blue copper dial. Perhaps the most stunning dial on a dress watch. That is actually my true grail.

Most of us who are lucky enough to wear them every day don’t care about giant, more dramatic looking “get your attention” watches. As far as most people can tell, we might as well be wearing a Timex. I have a 1960 Calatrava Automatic that I’ve worn for 20 years. It keeps impeccable time and the look says all I want it to. Understated Elegance!

I bought this Patek model from Tiffany and was branded Tiffany on the face. Anyway I just had the watch serviced after 20years which took about six months. It kept time unbelievable as I checked the accuracy over a weeks time and it was perfect.

The simple elegance of the 5227J makes it my favourite.
@StorKejsaren5 жыл бұрын
If I ever get a Patek this is most likely it, not only because the price, but I think this is the most attractive dress watch you can find bellow $15k. I would for sure take this over a Lange Saxonia or a VC Patrimony, you are paying mostly for the brand regardless of which of the three you chose and then Patek Philippe is just the most valuable brand of them. I think I prefer the 5119R however, the rose gold makes it look even more elegant, might be wrong about that though..?

I don't think I understand why AP is in the top three watch makers when Vacheron and Patek have at least 5 historic beautiful watches they are known for each, while I would bet that 99% of AP sales are the royal oak (or offshore which doesn't feel that different)

Coming from someone who’s in the market for a watch at this level - I’m just wondering how much of that 20,000 is brand value. When we put this up against the JLC ultra thin line, I feel like we’re getting a more modern movement, added complications and automatic winding with the JLC. In gold, we’re looking at similar prices. I think I’d go for the JLC.
@Snappy650 Жыл бұрын
If I were cross shopping JLC and Calatrava I’d look at Piaget. I have a Calatrava for the rare times I need a dress watch, but for a more daily affair that understated Piaget is solid.
@andreahighsmith636 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Bradley. When someone buys a watch of this level, I would say he/she not only looks at the watch itself but also at the brand and its heritage. In my point of view this is a very nice classic watch. Ok, I'm biased since I have one of this 😉 But, in my opinion, Patek is the "gold standard" for all watch brands. Everyone compares themselves to Patek: "...as good as PP...", "better than PP...", but always PP is the comparison pattern but others brands. Additionally, the PP cases are more elaborate than those from other brands as, for example, Lange&Sohne and others, which are always the same and sometimes boring. And last not least, in the used market, nobody beats Patek. This must make some sense... All the best.

How in any way is it not perfect, I think it’s about as close as you can get for what it is. I’ve owned Patek, Journe, AP, Vacheron, Lange, RM in multiple varieties yet this piece has that “it” factor. Wind & wear with a polo or a suit. The contrast of the lacquered white dial, blued hands and black Roman numerals coupled with the warm yellow gold and hobnail accents makes it unlike anything else☝🏻😉

Non-hacking movement for that price? Sheesh. I guess the price tag covers the finishing and the brand name, less the movement. Still, what a great looking watch. Bezel is very striking, and the thin nature of the case is great for formal events. Not for my personal style, but I can appreciate the watch, no doubt.

About the bezel...my sister gifted me a fossil watch years ago, and it has that same-ish bezel, sure the PP finishing is most likely way better than the fossil one but just saying that it's not unique to PP.
@GenWivern25 жыл бұрын
The movement, fancy as it is, will look familiar to anyone who has had a look inside practically any Swiss Incabloc watch from the 1950s or 60s. This is a very conservative watch indeed, the main surprise being the 9-¾ ligne movement in a 36mm case. Which explains the position of the subdial, no doubt. (For comparison I have a 28mm watch with an 11 ligne mechanism I've been putting off fiddling with because it's a bit dauntingly small). I assumed that Patek would be using the 215PS in some dainty ladies' watches, but apparently not: 33mm diameter is the smallest they do. This strikes me as exceedingly odd. Anyway, unless seen as an investment there's nothing here to justify the price tag except the brand and the exclusivity. I'd far rather take a vintage piece from a good name and pocket the change, which would be a tidy sum.
