In today's watch review we take our first in a series of videos for 2017 looking at the legendary Swiss brand Patek Philippe. I thought the best place to start would be with their best selling flagship model, the Calatrava. This thin, minimalist iconic manual wind dress watch (ref. 3919) personifies many aspects of the haute horology watchmaker and has an equally interesting story of how it came to be. This understated luxury watch could very well be one of the most perfect dress watches for the modern gentlemen.

I have been a watch collector for a number of years, I have bought (and sold) a number of more expensive pieces, however over recent years my enthusiasm dropped as the costs involved didn't make sense. After watching your videos my enthusiasm has totally been reignited!, whilst I still have a few more expensive pieces I have recently bought a SKX and a Junkers based on your comments. The be frank the quality and design of just these two watches really put the more expensive prices into question in some areas. You Sir, have opened my eyes and rekindled my love for collecting !. Thank you indeed !!!

Pure class that managed to resist the larger watch trends of the 1990's. Your review was spot on across the board. Couldn't agree more and if anything is going to maintain value it's a Patek.

I first saw Calatrava 3919 at Beyer's, Zurich, Bahnhofstrasse, in July, 1985. I lost my heart and my mind there and then ! Calatrava 3919 and it's successor 5119 are THE ultimate dress watches. Sheer beauty and understatement. No wonder that particlar watch is a synonym for Patek Philippe. Nice review !

is there any chance you could take the glove off when doing wrist shots? It kind of obscures the way the watch would normally look on wrist. not sure if others feel the same way. thanks for the great videos!!

TGV, try searching amazon for 'carbon digital caliper' (should give the right thing on both UK and US amazon) and you'll find calipers made from carbon fibre (so they won't scratch anything) for under £10. They are probably slightly less precise than the steel ones, only reading to 0.1mm rather than 0.01, but that is more than accurate enough for measuring watches! Super lightweight too! Keep up the great work, John

TGV my caliper is has Carbon Fiber tips and the fancy display, as John suggested, so they don't scratch the watch and the display reading is way easier, specially in a video!

Nice review as always TGV. I personally like the ref 5196r when it comes to Calatravas. I think it embodies the essence of this line. Hello TGV. Great view and indeed a significant watch. I believe this is the first Patek ever reviewed on this channel right? What a mile stone! Congrats. Also, after serval research I've done. I learnt that Patek actually making their movement "unhackable" intentionally. The reason behind it is they want the second hand keep "tell the passing of the time" even when you are adjusting the minutes and hours.

I admire PP's history and successes and this model is very lovely. However, I'd probably go with a VC or AP or perhaps an independent such as FP Journe or even a simpler model from the Breguet line over this. I can see the appeal though - very elegant and discreet. Ciao, John

Hey TGV, thanks for the review. The close-ups of the Calatrava didn't show the 'micro-scratches' that I often see on gold pieces. Does Patek use some special formula for their gold? I noticed that the bezel and the back of the watch both avoid a mirror finish that would make scratches more noticeable. Thanks again for giving us a look at such an awesome watch.

hi TGV! I have a Patek Calatrava Ref No. 3425/5 from the early 1970s that I inherited from my grandfather, along with a 1957 Rolex Day Date, an Omega Constellation C, Omega Seamaster from the 50s and 1982 Rolex Oysterdate. but looking at your channel, I now lust after the Seiko's. A PP is the Mount Everest of aspirations for many horological folk but I must say that it is remarkable in how unremarkable it looks. Very understated. Unless I could wear it regularly I just couldn't justify it. Even if I was stonkingly wealthy.

It seems to me that most of the comments on this particular watch, come from Ford Focus car owners. Dream on, but don’t knock the price of quality. I’m personally lucky enough to own a Patek Calatrava Amagnetic 1960, bought some years ago. It’s pure class, with its simple classic design and I would not swap it for anything else. I also own two other watches. The first being a 36mm steel/white gold Datejust, worn almost daily since 1980 (a classic now) and a recent purchase of an Omega 300 diver, new addition. A beautiful, dive watch, blue dial, with a blue rubber strap. I think Omega has produced a strong contender to challenge Rolex.

besides very few of us in the world being able to afford such luxuries, myself definitely included, money aside, this is one of those piece to admire and can appreciate as a watch aficionado, but not anything I believe most of us would actually want to own... would definitely not have enough occasions to justify wearing this enough. plenty of nice other things to spend $10K-20K on.. a select number of fine watches and still have change to get a nice camera and lenses to make some photographic art with instead. but, maybe that's just me.. That being said, although maybe not on the same level as this Patek, I have an opportunity to experience a fine dress watch, none the less. I have essentially inherited what I believe to be a very nice vintage Vacheron Constantin dress watch.. Probably doesn't cost nearly as much as this piece here, but I feel just as elegant, understated and classic. Definitely small and thin in design to house a nice mechanical movement. I can't seem to match the model # to anything I've searched for online, but it's some earlier model of the Patrimony design.. from the 60-70's. It's in great condition and been in a bank vault for a long time.. at least 20 years, maybe 30+? IDK, great condition, I'd love to wind and see it work, but I've been warned that since it's been untouched for so long, I should probably have it looked over and serviced first before trying to wind and start up the mechanical movement.. there's a chance that solidified oil, grease or whatever lubricant(s) that is inside the watch may have dried and hardened and I might actually cause more damage. I'm sure to get this thing serviced will not be a small bill, but I suppose it could be potentially far less expensive that repairing the watch if I do something to break it because it's not been used for so long.

The Calatrava is very conservative rather than boring, it is the preferred choice of the wealthy who are always discrete about their wealth. Quite a watch you got there. I love it how subtle the grandeur is. That movement would be a pleasure to service, with the split bridge and all. Of course it takes some balls to touch that :-) Patek makes great watches, but they are clearly meant for people who have more money than they can spend. I once browsed a watch dealer page and noticed a great looking complicated watch and the price was just 590.something. Then I realized that the dot was not a decimal point but a thousand separator and the watch was a Patek :-) I think you got the age right. I'm 22 years older than you and I think that watch is aimed for men of my age. Not me, being a weird hippie, but the suit type.

Hi TGV, I have to say this Calatrava might be an icon but I would clearly prefer the more modern iteration like the 5227. The Urban Gentry haha indeed it was. I wore my alpinist and my sarb033 while i was travelling from dubai back to Australia. I only pull a Schwarzkopf when i travel between airports haha. Truth be told the alpinist is my favorite watch in my collection and it fits well with my tattoo hehehe

Wow... why are there so much hate towards this watch? I'm just baffled the amount of people are comparing this watch to Orient, Seikos, et cetera. It's a completely different league, materials used, and history.

It's nice to finally see a Patek on here! Only Patek can get away with just hour numerals and no minute markers on such a plain dial.

Next dress watch for me will be Lange 1. It is also rather simple but has that unique design.

Call it my taste, but that's as close to perfection as it gets in a dress watch. And trust me: my entire collection save my Seiko 5 snk 809 and my brand new (new to me) Tag Heuer 1500 is made up of dress watches. If only I had the money...I seem to be saying that a lot these days!

Would be good if you could give an estimation about how much of the price that we pay for this watch goes for the gold. For example, do you know how many grams of gold is used in it?

Did you know that in clocks with roman numerals they pretty much always write '4' as 'IIII' while officially it's supposed to be 'IV'. This goes for almost very clock or watch!

TGV, you keep saying you have small wrists but how big are they? The watch is nice but I thought it too small until it was on your wrist and didn't look under-sized.

Have you ever owned / reviewed a vintage Rado Manhattan? I'm toying with the idea of buying one. I like the one with the blue face especially.

I think this will be my next watch, at least a variant of it. Might be a year before I can realize it because I don't want to part with my 1948 18k yellow gold cal 89 IWC. Or my other watches I'm not good at selling I get too attached. One thing is I need to do research. Because if you do a search of Patek Caletrava you find many variants of this watch that look exactly like it with the hobnail case. The one I get will look exactly like this maybe without display back but small seconds is a must. But u can find this exact look in a Patek starting from about $9k up to over $20k. Not sure if I can explain why I know I've seen it in different sizes down to 33mm up to 39mm but WTF? Definitely need to research before I buy. My wrist can pull off 33mm or even 40mm. (I used to wear a 47mm Panerai now it gets dust I like gold dress watches now.) But the look your watch depicts is exactly what I want to the T. I actually can't get this watch out of my head. I'll be trying to keep it under $13k, as I did see one on EBay for that price that looks great with a small seconds. I have a 14k gruen with a white dial and small seconds the dial resembles the Patek but 3,6,9,12 in Arabic numerals.

Dear TGV Thank you, very well planned and informative video. I know this is Haute Horology, It could just be me but I find this a little boring compared to the ruggedness and adventure of the dive watches you have reviewed, haha.

One time I was hanging out with a guy who was wearing this watch, and someone asked if it was a daniel wellington watch. Needless to say, we were both LIVID. I've never been so close to punching someone for their knowledge(or lack of).

You've nailed it well Tristano, while a beautiful watch, I can't help but think it's got a bit too much of that "old man's watch" feel for my taste. You can get an FP Journe Chronometre Bleu in a Tantalum case for the same price as today's Calatrava (about 20k). The Journe is just an overall better watch with a much more fascinating movement, made entirely in solid gold!
