It’s so lovely that you called out Victor Davis Hanson and Tom Holland, dear Spencer. I would have liked to go on to grad school this year and was not able to, so I’ve been learning so much from both of those great historians to quench my thirst for learning, and connecting them in my thoughts with what I’m learning from you. I’m going to be an author some day and it came to me that it’s a solemn responsibility to be as educated as I can be to prepare for that day.

If I remember my history correctly, Hannibal Barca embarked on his trans-alpine expedition without the backing of the Carthaginian state. He was the only man in Carthage who knew what needed to be done.
