I like the idea of developers getting more cash, but with so much functionality steam offers I can understand the big cut they take. Didn't help that EGS was sniffing around your steam data trying to do some weird shit back then making me completely anti-epic. YongYea shed a good light on it. Props to Epic to making an insane engine but maybe they should just stick to that instead of a butchered client.

I personally like to support indie devs on the epic launcher, as someone learning to make games and specifically working with unreal engine I sympathize with them, but when I bought ashen there my controller didn't work and I had to add the game on steam so I can use their controller support, which is fantastic and works almost with anything with an absurd level of customization, as a store it's ok-ish, some good deals and fantastic titles like sifu, but as a platform the difference is like night and day, if they put some effort into features instead of deals maybe we could get a decent rival in several years, because each day egs doesn't gets better steam does

Steam Input is the #1 reason I make sure all my games go into my Steam library. I like gaming with controllers and with any controller I want instead of just being expected to use an Xbox controller. I like my DualSense and customizing the trackpad and gyro controls. I like being able to easily access my entire library from Big Picture Mode and downloading games with a few button presses instead of needing a keyboard and mouse on my couch. Steam is just the best. It's unmatched.

if i recall correctly steam has scaling sales revenue cut, i dont remember the exact numbers but it's something like first 10000 copies, 15% cut 500000 copies and above, 20% cut 1 mil copies sold, is the usual 30% not exact numbers, just something i recall from ages ago so the numbers are not at all accurate there's also the problem in EGS (not epic's fault, just how it is) that epic exclusives generally don't do well on player count, and if the game is also a multiplayer game with matchmaking... well let's just say that suddenly you spend way more time in the lobby than any given decent game on steam not too much of a big problem for singleplayer tho, and a "hack" with the exclusivity deals is that it only lasts 1 year so.... early access for 1 year, then full version 1.0 release on both EGS and steam capitalizing on hype around initially releasing early access and epic's money then a year later hype for the full release and (hopefully) a healthy pre-existing community this "hack" has been done by Hades by supergiant games, and everybody loves Hades or "loves Hades characters too much" edit: sorry, i mentioned Hades even though it's mentioned on the video. i had this video as "background noise" just coming back to continue this initial comment every few min that is until i rewatched the video properly this time

One of the things I hate the most about Epic is that it doesn't let you move your games to diferent hardrives like you can do with Steam and other game lauchers on PC were they let you discover your existing games. On Epic you have to literaly trick the program to do this and sometimes it doesn't work.
@GDRobbye
@GDRobbye Жыл бұрын
You actually can. First you have to start the game download to the new storage location. Epic recommends letting it download about 1-2%, but you can stop the download as soon as the game folder is created. After the folder is made, you copy the original game files to the new location and then resume the download; it should then start discovering the new files. I know this isn't as good as Steam or Uplay, but it's a start I guess.

Another thing that isn't mentionned is the linux compatibility, it's a massive pain in the ass to use the EGS on linux. The solution always ends being Lutris but even then you have to manually configure wine/proton or whatever compatibility tool you are using. On top of that it's heavy af, while steam's resources usage come from the web pages, the EGS is very hungry and slow because of the poor optimization.

Yeah the core problem is like you said they do things that are good for developers, and those things are legitimately good. You'd be crazy to turn down a million dollar + deal as an indie dev whose entire career could rely on the game you're making to bring in money to buy food. And letting devs keep a higher percentage of the profits, I mean it's not like an explicit problem like you said 30% is industry standard, but it's still nice. But none of that is good for consumers. And buying games to force them to be exclusive on your platform is also not good for consumers. When you keep doing things that are bad for the people that have to give you money, it's no wonder that people don't like using your store. I mean they kept making bs arguments about things like how it was totally better to not have a review system in place. And then they turned around and announced that they would have a review system, but that it wouldn't have any actual text comments on it just a rating. And on top of that the way it was designed was clearly made to select for people bias to give games higher ratings which again is good for developers and bad for consumers. And it's just hypocritical to complain about Steams Monopoly when they're the ones buying exclusivity contracts that force people to only use their platform. Oh yeah really standing up for the little guy there epic by throwing around your money to halt competition. And the grandest irony is that despite all of this, if they had simply not gone so wild on the exclusivity deals. (I'm not even saying none at all just none of the super BS ones like how they would take kickstarter games that promised a steam release and have them release on epic instead and things like that) And if they had just focused on the free games thing, I would probably much more willingly use their store. Like even with it being trash if it was a place where I got tons of free games then fuck it I'd at least pay more attention to it and maybe I'd actually buy something. Meanwhile I've collected dozens of free games from them but I've played almost none of them because I'd rather not think about their storefront at all. Also as a sidenote, I got into game development in the last few years and for a while I was learning the Unreal Engine. The grandest irony is that the program for managing your Unreal projects is the same launcher as their Epic store. Except when you go to the Unreal Engine side of things, things are way way more featured than the Games store. They've had basic things like a shopping cart and user reviews up for that side of the same program for years! Hell the reviews are even a straightforwards star rating system with actual text reviews! And yet it took them literal years to even consider adding anything remotely resembling these features to the consumer facing side of the literal same program.
@BlazeMakesGames
@BlazeMakesGames Жыл бұрын
Also if you're curious about how Epic's review system is incredibly biased and don't know about this, here's how I understand it works: Essentially instead of just letting anyone who owns the game leave a review, they instead make it so that you have to play the game for at least 2 hours first. (on a totally unrelated note the refund limit is 2 hours as well...) Then instead of simply giving the option to review after that point, you are selected randomly as to whether or not you get the honor of leaving a review. Then on top of that you can't just leave a text review, you have to give it a rating and then answer various polls for things like "How would you describe the visuals?" with the only responses being "Beautiful, Realistic, Playful, or Unique" So to break it down, people that play the game and are immediately turned off of it before the refund limit can't leave a review explaining why. On top of that even if you do play long enough to be eligible, you have to be chosen to leave a review, which is a random chance at the end of every play session. This means that if you do more play sessions, you effectively get more chances to be picked to review it. So the review system naturally selects for people who have played the game for the longest and thus are more likely to have enjoyed the game. Then on top of that you can't even describe what you like and dislike specifically, you have to answer generic polls that have pretty much only positive answers. So using that example I listed, if you like a game but wanna criticize the visuals, the best you can do is say that the visuals are "unique" and have no ability to provide an explanation beyond that. It is a truly awful review system that is obviously designed to just help people get positive reviews.

From the very day I heard about EGS, I knew they were a bad egg. Steam is gathering gamers, EGS is dividing them, and the best solution for us all is if they just go "poof" very silently and disappear. I have never bought or supported them, EA or Ubisoft, and I refuse using their app or having anything remotely connected to that trash, I rather wait for their exclusive time to run out so I can get it on Steam. Returnal was something I'd want to try, but as long as it forces you to install EGS on my device with or without my consent, I won't buy it. I just don't support scum. EA lost me after they started going mobile street and just remaking the last COD, or sport game, since each game is literally just a remake of the prior game. Just new year in the title. ITs why Blitz 2000 was so good. and even its successor was good since it improved on the last game. Now adays the different games that are remakes of last year's game end up falling flat since they cut out things that should be a part of the game from last time. Not to mention it is just constant rebuying... and I am sure if EA could they would make a season pass version of the game if they could. Ubisoft... have they died? Or just joined the same Mobile bandwaggon? Just seems to me the gamming market for some of these places are going to start crashing soon

1:18 But, it didnt. A monopoly is where the competition is at an unfair disadvantage. Or there is no competition. The reason there was no competition, is because steam offers a genuinely great service which noone wants to put in the effort to match or outdo. The reason the current 'competition' is trash, because they arent doing anything to actually give people a reason to buy from them. Their services are trash. Those stores only exist to make money, without providing anything to the customer.

Epic have been absolute scumbags trying to "dethrone" Steam with the most underhanded garbage methods imaginable so most sane potential users of it went "screw you" and never used it. If Epic just focused on making a good store they might have gotten somewhere, instead they dumped all their money into buying exclusivity for games, which pisses everyone off, instead of actually making the store usable and its still a pile of garbage to this day. All the early defenders of EGS going "HURR DURR VALVE SO GREEDY TAKING 30%" have been humiliated a thousand times over at this point. EGS has no features, Steam has so many features you don't even need to go to the internet for most things... Want to play co-op in a game that doesn't have online co-op but has local? Sure just stream it through Steam. Wanna make a small PC to use at your TV as a console? Sure Steam has big picture mode or even the Steam OS. Wanna mod your game? Steam Workshop. Wanna go to the forums for troubleshooting? Steam forums. Wanna check out a livestream briefly to see gameplay? Steam has livestreaming built in... What does EGS have? A shopping cart that took them years to add, amazing... EDIT: forgot to add that while Valve is working hard to make windows games playable on Linux to chip away at the Microsoft monopoly, our good friends at Epic killed Easy Anti Cheat for Linux thereby making countless MP games unplayable. Yet another reason to not give those scum any money EVER.

My main issue with EGS is that it's very feature incomplete, especially considering the ludicrous money they have. It's crazy how they didn't at least try to copy even the most basic of Steam features at launch and then try new ideas. Exclusivity wise it does suck when it's a big studio that doesn't depend on that money infusion to keep going, unlike indies. I see nothing wrong with games developed or published by EGS like Alan Wake II and Fall Guys since they might've not been released without Epic backing.

Horizon Forbidden West has just come out for the PC. I have a choice Steam, a company that screws my games forcing updates on me. Or a shop I only heard of because of the software they have developed for writing games. And nothing else. I've stopped playing Skyrim SE not that I liked it as much as LE. Because after modding it to my liking, I had to re mod it to my likening again. When they overwrote it with anniversary then the updates to anniversary. I get a bit snotty when I cannot play a game I bought because the Steam store I bought it off and the developers say I MUST have these updates. When I know I will have time waiting to get the changed software, so the mods run on the update then hours of work ahead re-installing the mods. Instead of allowing me to choose, DO I WANT TO UPGRADE THE GAMES. Taking the risk of having the flavor of the game totally stuffed like Hogwarts legacy was when they changed Bombarda to a single shot weapon from an area effect IF you hit a target. Bombarda made playing it on the PC better. Evened out the lack of steering and dodge when you had to lift your hand up to hit the number keys to fire the spells. And made you a standing target. They should have been honest and called it what it was, a console game. Not made for PC. Then we have Skyrim, how many updates and they still haven't got it right. And Steam still complicit in forcing the updates or you don't play the game. It is locked until you agree to update it on my system. I can't say what your system does I can't see it. I do see mine. So, my question is, does Epic force you to do upgrades on games purchased through them?

I played X Com back in the 1990's on my Amiga 500. Loved the game so much, and still do. When I heard Julian Gollop, the creator of the original X Com game, was making a spiritual successor called Phoenix Point, I immediatelty rushed out and paid into the crowdfunding effort. I was pretty hyped. Shortly before release, Gollop dropped a bombshell stating the new game was to be an Epic exclusive. My rage burned with the heat of a thousand suns. I demanded a refund, then parked my ass on the developer forum quoting extracts from other backers that were as infiriated as I was. Then I started posting reviews pointing out how Phoenix Point was a buggy pile of garbage. I was then banned for 1000 years, but my work was done, and Gollop most likely figured out that he had made a terrible mistake by screwing over fans that had been loyal to him for years, if not decades. While I have an Epic account, I only paid for one game, Mechwarrior 5, an exclusive of course, which was so bad I had to refund it. The only time I load up Epic is when there is a free game to snag. Other than that I have no intrention of giving that greasy little troll Sweeny a fucking penny.

How could you not care as a consumer about the 30% price cut ?? It makes games more expensive or cost quality and cuts down more diverse/ experimental games because 30% is in so many cases an extremely tight margin. Any yes epic games store is not great UX wise but steam sill lock as shitty as 2012 with the html embedded shit! I can't use it, I literally can't be bothered to even take the free games they are giving away because it's just that slow. On another PC of mine that has an old i3 2120, Steam still runs normally and takes 30-50 seconds to load up and never lags, but the retarded epic games store refuses to load even after 20 minutes and like 5 tries. I just can't take that thing seriously, it's just this thing where I look up what games are free and if they're worth anything (to me), I "MIGHT" take them, FOR FREE, AND I STILL DEBATE IF IT'S WORTH IT... Now, you know you've got a problem. And ngl, both steam and epic are most likely Chromium based and steam looks nicer and loads way faster, SO HOW DID THEY EVEN MAKE IT SO SLOW? They've gotta have some very unoptimised code for no reason, just because...
