Hey, a european here. Maybe I do not understand the scale of the issue in USA, but I believe that a cashier is a profession that should be replaced by a robot. Cashier's job is terrible: it is exhausting, it does not require any skills, and it does not provide any job satisfaction to the worker. It would be better for the society to have humans working on other positions, such as promoters, cooks, marketers, or mechanics to service the robot cashiers. I don't see any social difference between silently standing in front of a person who scans my items and scanning my items myself, while being watched by a security guard from my back. I usually manage to do it at the same speed. If they organize self-checkout stations that are more convenient for larger purchases, then I will be simply happy.
@HaggisMuncher-69-4208 ай бұрын
Maybe for your super duper high IQ with so many qualifications and fantastic career options but for a 16 year old kid or an elderly person, cashier work definitely isn't terrible. The issue is that YOU'RE socially inept and can't strike up a conversation with your fellow human, how does that discredit the need for people to have jobs? Also, are you getting a discount for replacing the employees? Just say you're an unearned elitist, it takes far fewer words.

I tend to verify that the normal checkout aisles are manned and functioning when I enter a store. When I'm done shopping if the only option is the self checkout I just leave my full cart and exit the store and go to a fully functional store instead. If my choices change and all the stores switch to only self checkout I'll have to figure it out at that time but so long as I have the option stores with people will get my business. Around here the local Walmart locations tried doing the self checkout only thing last year but pretty quickly went back to having human clerks manning the checkout aisles again. I don't know if that's permanent but if not I'll stop going there again. So far the majority of stores in my city have maintained human clerks along with some self checkout.

Man, gotta love capitalism. Never thought about self checkout as unpaid labor before, but you're absolutely right. Great video! And grocery stores locking away toothpaste, baby formula and deodorant because these items get stolen so much? That's so sad. Because items like these are often being stolen out of necessity, by people who can't afford to purchase them. In our capitalist society apparently it makes more sense to lock away the items and protect the store from theft rather than building actualy social security nets and helping out people in need. This is dystopian.
@thenerdnetwork8 ай бұрын
Ok judging by your 2nd sentence you have no idea why things are the way they are. Those items get locked away because they are usually rather expensive, are sealed, and very easy to resell on the black market as they are non perishable or have an extremely long shelf life. People who are starving want food. People don't steal canned goods because they are large and bulky, and aren't worth anything. If they steal 1 tube of toothpaste, and sell it, they can then go buy 20 cans of food. There are social programs to help people, just many people don't seek them out. And in the minds of many MANY people, why should only some people have access to unlimited amounts of free products, and not "me"? As for stores locking items away to prevent theft, you are so far gone its insane. Stores need to make money for the store to stay open. Its not on the company to implement some sort of "security net" to help people in need, they are there to make money, what company wants to be in business to not make money? How will that company stay in business?
