Something to note, thematically, about Bleach: In every single one of Ichigo's "big" fights, its 'black' (Ichigo's black shinigami robes, his black bankai sword) versus 'white' (the captain's robes of Kenpachi and Byakuya, the white clothes all the arrancars wear) with 'black' being 'good' and 'white' being 'evil'. This is all throughout the story of Bleach. For his fight against Ulquiorra, when he goes berserk in his hollow form, it is the only instance where Ichigo is 'white' (the white skin and mask) and his opponent is 'black' (the fur covering Ulquiorra).

The lesson being that hearts are created and exist between people, and not inside lone individuals. Obviously, Ulquiorra never witnessed that conversation, but with this final line Kubo is basically establishing this sentiment as a universal truth understood by those with enlightenment

If I recall, Ichigo in his full hollowfied state kept saying something like "Protect her", so I'm guessing that the only part of the real Ichigo that was conscious was his desire to keep Orihime safe, but his actions seem to suggest that his Hollow side was in complete control of the body itself, since he was pretty much putting her in danger in that state.

Ulquiorra didn’t fall in love with Orihime, I don’t know why people feel the need to turn anything and everything into a romance XD Ulquiorra started as a character with no emotions or any real purpose besides serving Aizen. He became interested in Orihime because she showed so much emotions and had great faith in her friends. But also he becamde interested in Ichigo after seeing how he reacts to his friends getting hurt. He started becoming more human, as Ichigo stated in the previous episode after observing Orihime & her friends ((to some extent)) He died as a character who finally understood humans and emotions, and gained the concept of the “heart” The “heart” was introduced by Kaien with his conversation with Rukia about people being connected and having bonds So it’s really poetic to see how everything gets connected at the end!! Edit: I like to think of Ulquiorra as a child trying to figure things out. He knew nothing but died knowing “everything”

There is an extra bit of backstory for Ulquiorra in the manga that they didn't put into the anime, witch still baffles me to this day. It puts Ulquiorras world view into perspective and how he came to be so nihilistic. It's really well written and drawn, i highly suggest you check it out.

For me when I think about it Ulquiorra definitely looks scarier or more "demonic". All that changed with ichigo was really the mask design (and well the hair) while with ulquiorra he became like some corrupted fallen angel/demon with those eyes (also the tear stain thingys which btw is one of the things I like about his design the most) his limbs became covered in fur and those bat wings and tail. Now everyone, including SMF, can see the twisted and sad character that is Ulquiorra, the one emotion he felt constantly and he represents in the espada, was despair. Since I was 15, wow 10 years ago, when i read this in the manga, I decided to keep Ulquiorra alive in all my usernames XD but it was too long and hard to pronounce in chats, so I shortened it to Ulq. this fight was one of the highlights of the arrancar arc for me next to grimmjow fight. just the atmosphere of when ichigo transforms and uliquiorra kind of being the one hunted and his demeanor towards the end right before he fades away. and just the animation and lighting...everything was beautiful to look at. even though i did feel sadness in how it ended.

Some very interesting non-spoiler Manga informations about Ulquiorra ( that will not be shown in the anime ) : Before he was recruited by Aizen, he was a hollow that was unable to feel ANYTHING. Becuase of his mask back then(a "suit" that was covering his entire body ), he could't talk, eat, smell, hear or even feel something he touched. He was also very isolated because of his white appearance by other Hollow's, so he was always alone too. The only thing he had was his eyes... That is actually why he is shown to be so nihilistic and empty and that is also why he showed so much interest in Orihime because she is a person that is filled up with emotions that he lacked.

You should read Ulquiorra's past (some panels Kubo made but didn't have time to include in the manga) and react to it. You would understand better Ulquiorra's character and why he is a nihilist and believes only to what he can see with his own eyes. It's very short with just a few panels and it's very interesting. The speech about his eyes and the word heart so used by human to describe their emotion is fully understood once you read it.

Fun fact. Uliquiorra is a representation of a philosophy called nihilism. Basically the belief of nothing. No emotions etc. Ichigo is the antithesis of his character. At the end perhaps Uliquiorra learned there were emotions at the end? We don't know. Soul made a greattt youtube video on it

It wasn't really a vasto lorde though, Ulquiorra was a legit one that was transformed into an arrankar. The full hollow is an experiment that Aizen made mixing shinigami and hollow souls, which combined with Ichigo's power is mich stronger than an actual vasto lorde. In the manga It's shown how that experiment ended up inside Ichigo.

Calling it a Vasto Lorde is incorrect according to lore. Ichigo's hollow power is not a Menos, just a single entity. Ridiculously overpowered, quite stronger than most Vasto Lorde.

I still think Ulquiorra was higher on the pecking order than he was assigned. He reached lvl 2 Resurrection form when no one else did. Well, either way, he was one of the most memorable characters and fights in the series.

Well, Aizen knew better who's stronger. And secondly, Szayel-Apporo Granz was the first one who reached R2. It was at the time of King Barragans reign, when Granz was Zero Espada and hadn't regressed himself yet.

Furthermore, Ulquiorra himself confirmed that there are three Espadas stronger then him(obviously he never knew about Yammi's true power) and Aizen later said that he planned everything, including this fight. P.S. You can learn more about the other guy from novel "Spirits are always with you". It's absolutely great.
