Colchis (modern day Georgia) was a producer of gold in antiquity. The miners would dredge sheep fleeces through muddy riverbeds rinse out the mud and the gold specs would become visible. These legends were contrived to illustrate to the bronze age listener the world around him.

My School has been teaching me and my grade (Grade 9) about the merchant of Venice. When I and my classmates were learning about the first scene of the play, Act 1 Scene 1, the story of Jason and his Argonauts was mentioned. We studied it in great detail for 2 weeks. We are currently reading Act 1 Scene 2. This will help me learn the story of him and his Argonauts again (but in even more detail). By the way Life Guide, I have been a fan of the History Subject since I was 2 years old. But the way you explain it has enhanced my love for history. Thank you.

Regarding 22:42, Circe was a sister of Aeëtes the King of Colchis. Circe and Aeëtes had another sister named Pasiphaë who married Minos the King of Crete. Minos was a son of Europa and Zeus. Pasiphaë became the mother of the Minotaur, because she consummated her lust for the Cretan Bull. Theseus from Athens killed the Minotaur with the help of Ariadne who was the daughter of Pasiphaë and Minos. In Athens, Medea married Aegeus who was Theseus' father. Medea and Aegeus had a son named Medus who was half-brother to Theseus. Theseus exiled Medea and Medus from Athens. Medea and Medus returned to Colchis where her father had been usurped as king by his brother Perses. Medea killed her uncle Perses and restored her father Aeëtes as King of Colchis. After Aeëtes died, his grandson Medus became King of Colchis.

=)) The mercantile spirit of ancient and actual greeks is carved even into their stories =)). In fact in this tale is a huge mistification, possible encouraged by gold merchants. In ancient times the only region that gold could be harvested by river-exploatation was on Aries River, Western Carpathians. In fact, is used even today. One of my friends married with a wedding ring forged by her father using gold harvested by diving a sheep skin into the river. Even the "Dragon" match the local totems. But is fun to see (most of) all people in awe with the story =))

Interesting comment! I think you're right about the mercantile tradition of the ancient Greeks, or at least the elites, as that explains their interest in long voyages, and tradition of ship-building and navigation. Also, it should be noted that the heros of these stories were not normal local people but wealthy men, typically sons of local kings. These 'Greek' kings had most likely established themselves as rulers over the local people, not as a result of being tribal chieftains, but maybe rather as outsiders due to their wealth, political connections and knowledge from their long-distance trading, and associated need to control coastal lands and groups of men for security. Of course, they weren't 'Greek' in those days, but Hellenic. This is about 2000BC, long before the Greek identity arose. The 'Greek' legends even pre-date the ancient Myceneans who later gave rise to the classical Greeks. The legends were quite probably even located somewhere else than the Mediterranean as it is known that the Myceneans came from elsewhere. One major possibility is northern Europe, around the Baltic Sea, which was much warmer in the Bronze Ages and has a lot of connections to these Greek myths, such as the common use of 'Ae' and 'Hell' in names (eg. Helsinki and Hellespont, an old name for the Gulf of Finland), and many other connections. See the amazing book, "The Baltic Origins of Homer's Epic Tales." I understood that Jason probably sailed up the river Oxus into Central Asia (now the Amu Darya river). There are also traditions of filtering river water for gold in Uzbekistan, which have been might be the location of the original Golden Fleece.
