yes, I have long thought that the depiction of rightful vengeance is so compelling because it frees us of moral choice and lets us indulge our basic violence, without discrimination. That's why people club together to hate pedophiles (even murderers in prison feel vindicated by the violence inflicted on such), it liberates their basic violence, giving it a morality that vindicates.
