The lecture at the end to the guy on the floor always reminds me of Falling Down, where Michael Douglas tells the dying golfer. "Yeah. And now you're going to die wearing that stupid hat. How does it feel?" Or Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven; about to get his head blow apart, lying on the floor "I don't deserve this... to die like this. I was building a house."

The original TV series with Edward Woodard was very good. There was a short lived series very similar to “The Equalizer” on around the same time called “Stingray”. He drove a black C2 corvette, helped people in situations similar to “The Equalizer” but only would ask the victims a favor if he needed it.

We all love these glorious depictions of righteous violence, why is that? I think that along with random violence goes the feeling that we have somehow transgressed a moral code; violence without control and purpose is pure but flawed. What makes movies such as these so compelling is that they carefully build a rational that shows us that this violence is righteous, and therefore licensed. Because of this carefully constructed rational we can enjoy the violence without reserve.

I think it has to do with the fact that in real life so many truly evil people in high places commit horrible acts and get away with it. Even though it is fiction, there is something satisfying about watching a movie where "evil" (as depicted in the script) people get the punishment they so richly deserve. I just wish it happened more often in real life. Karma.
