Rachel Hutchisson's talk is about why the end of Corporate Social Responsibility is A GOOD THING. Why is it a good thing? Because it will be replaced, by "Human Social Responsibility."
Hutchisson outlines why the phrase Corporate Social Responsibility is so problematic, before offering her advice to businesses of all sizes in how to identify and operate a successful program. The key? Listening and empowering the workers of the business, and listening to your community. Hutchisson ends her talk with a call to leadership -- Keep the HUMANS central.
Rachel Hutchisson is VP of Corporate Citizenship & Philanthropy at Blackbaud (NASDAQ: BLKB), responsible for global corporate social responsibility, leading the company’s 3,200 associates in efforts to serve and give professionally and personally. Rachel brings experience in marketing, brand communications, corporate culture and strategic relationships to her role. She built Blackbaud’s CSR program from the ground up, leveraging her deep experience working at the intersection of business and nonprofits. Rachel is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dickinson College and holds a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. Rachel serves on the Board of Directors of the Giving Institute (Giving USA), the Giving Back Fund, AFP International, Learning to Give and the Coastal Community Foundation.

CSR is not about how the profits are used (i.e. how/what to give back), but how the profits are generated.

Just about the most amazing combination of cliches I've ever heard. This is the kind of person who rises to the top of our society because she is great about mouthing all kinds of pieties regarding social responsibility while the corporate world ruthlessly downsizes, outsources, and legally and illegally brings in more immigrants to lower wages. Of course they like to talk about "going green" or "being sustainable" because they want you to feel good about them even as you can't pay your rent. All these pieties are a new sacred host that is supposed to salve your hunger even as your belly rumbles.

I am now 71. Retired from the 9-5 world. During my working life - Volunteer commitments for years in ESL, community food programs, adopt-a-school-library, textile recycling, etc...So it goes without saying I continue to hold a particular focus. Now, a small legacy these past two years from my Dad, has sparked a desire to take this one step further, in a way I was unable to do before: begin SRI. You should see the looks I get! As if I am a demented old lady, missing some critical nuts and bolts. Not only tiresome for me. But, erroneous, judgemental. And, such a waste! Oh, I plan to ignore the naysayers, do my homework, and forge ahead.

In a world where not even all "millennials" realize the importance of being sustainable and regenerative in the 21st century, there needs to be more people like you. :) Keep up the good work, age is not a variable in this case, I have worked for/with people above this age and you do indeed get wiser with age (in most cases). Good job!

I'm not sure if she understood what corporate social responsibility stands for. She's the VP of Corporate Citizenship & Philanthropy. Those two things are very very much outdated to count as CSR. From someone who has more than a decade of experience in that field it's not a good TED talk. She talks about one specific element of CSR: corporate volunteering (I think). Shifting a corporate responsibility to the employees is a poor move.

Yes. Taking less rights, justice, due process law and stop targeting people in all positions so we can have our choices and empowered market values replaced. Charity is unsupported without justice and will also get extorted by communist public private partnerships, partnerships with who, big blue hat United nations sovereignty cutters.

Extortion justice not justice to society. They call it social justice. Its SOCIALIST justification. But I'm giving to a free? Society? From what I took from whole regions markets by removing rights or room to private or other groups by ruling out their sovereignty and locality of choices in market services and changed choices, controlling globally, monopolizing and expanding powers to circumvent or usurp their local laws and justice...I'm charitable though. Did you choose to swap your choices and prosperity and market opportunity or jobs and industry ,independence ,peace, FOR ONLY CHOICE TO LIMIT AND DEPENDENCY IN EXCHANGE?? THATS WHAT THEY'RE DOING

It's taking justice out from society and removing choices and free markets by monopolizing. Public private is not a chosen market or a private opportunity for individuals losing marketplace property or work or choices to do business, contract, consumer, etc. Private and independent sovereignty and liberty is missing there. I want to have life in private freedom with INDEPENDENT choices that have fair share of open market prosperity enabled by not having it pushed out or affect SEVERELY which is what happens. Its communist. I want choices not have to depend on charity not supported by justice and due process law backed by the authority of the free people's sovereignty, con ssd institutional court system. I want govt accountability. Voting rights. People's selected public servants and law abiding respecting ACCOUNTABILITY in public offices too. Not self deciding ruling sellouts or extorted captive leaderships establishing a foreign global greedy controlling brainwashing uniworld authoritarian decider taking whatever they want and deciding to distribute if and where when whatever it they may and call that charity and social justice. It's the same as CPS does really. They take ownership of people's children, they take away rights of all people really by doing this, take all ownership of parenting to themselves and redistribute who what how and where they like, and let me tell truthfully about it, IT AINT ANY BETTER MOST OF ITS REALLY REALLY VERY BAD. WORSE THAN MOST KNOW! ITS BAD!!! AND ITS. SO DECEIVING! THERES NO CHARITY WHERE NO JUSTICE OR DUE PROCESS AND NO ACCOUNTIBILITY. AND IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IT YOU NEED TO KNOW ITS NOT WORTH CHANCE TAKING. If they even remove children under such needless unwarranted circumstances AND the results are concealed and overwhelmingly bad and they have immunity, therefore that States they can authorize the procedures for any or no stated reason since they dont have to prove it, no due process there, and impunity. The Senators are saying lately about the impeachment that THE BAR FOR IMPEACHMENT HAS AS LWAYS BEEN AND MUST BE HIGHER. IT MUST NEVER BE THIS LOW, EVER! So, it's like saying oh we have to be doing this, whether you really need them to or not, they dont really improve children, the. Parenting or the justice and care, they are out to take every right and choice and say BUT WE'RE GOING TO CREATE GIVING OUT OF PROFITS OFF A SWALLOWED UP MARKET PLACE BIG TIME EVERYWHERE TO GET SOME CHARITY TO GIVE AROUND WHERE WE WILL DECIDE TO DISTRIBUTE. BUT, WE DONT HAVE TO,BUT YOU DONT HAVE RIGHTS TO AUTHORITY OR CHOOSE CV OR MAKE US ACCOUNTIBLE BECAUSE WE ARE MAKING YOU HAND IT IN TO US, THE LEADERS. CSR. CORP. SOCIALIST RULERS. SOCIALIST CHARITY.SOCIALIST JUSTICE. VS. CHOICE. PRIVATE RIGHTS. PRIVATE RELATIONS PERIOD .PUBLIC LAW AND SOCIETY LIBERATED PLURAL AND INDEPENDENTLY ACCOUNTIBLE, A COMMON LAW ORDER STANDARD WITH BASED DUE PROCESS JUSTICE. BASIS OF SUBSTANTIAL CAUSE INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. PEER JURY TRIAL. PROPER ACCUSATIONS ,CAUSES, FOR PROCEEDURE,WARRANTED BY JUSTICE SANE STANDARDS OF NECESSITY. Sounds wonderful: human social responsibility... but is it really? Corporations are still at the core of many global issues related to pollution of our environment and exploitation of both natural resources and (vulnerable) workers. These Multi National Corporations can shop for cheap labor and more lenient laws or enforcement. Small and Medium Size Enterprise most often can not shop around like MNC's. So please: be good as a human, do good and be involved in your community. But let's not forget the responsibility of corporations, who have a much lager footprint, maybe outside our communities: in cheap labor countries and weak states who sell commodities for the better of a small elite (and not for the good of the people).

The content of this speech is arguable. CSR is not an ending concept though its moving for corporate social entrepreneurship, social intrapreneurship and corporate social value creation. Corporations also have responsibilities as humans since they have legal personality. Most importantly, it is being legalized and considered as strict compliances in several countries; and standing beyond the philanthropic aspect.

but sometimes, corporations do CSR as a means to avoid taxes..and oh yesCSR is not always giving or sharing profits,, or returning to society/clientele a portion of your profits....Simply following the laws like labor laws and standards is CSR..you start with your employees..respect their rights, give whats due them then together share the responsibility of giving..

Her confession was a statement. I like the way she "plugs" in her Prius. CSR is being abused and manipulative towards profits. I need an extra 15.00 a week for cashiers asking for a dollar for this and that fundraiser. Also puts an unethical pressure on all the cashiers who don't have the time to explain the purpose. It's driven with speed and guilt. That's unethical... that's not good for everyone.

Define CSR. When did it come into effect? Who started it - was it an agreement in a meeting, etc? What is the empirical evidence in terms of measures of impact related to success and negative success: what has stopped and what continues or has evolved. Are man hours being lost in CSR against creativity, Labour and production? I could go on. First and foremost is the question of money and profit margins.

With a drastically widening gap between the haves and have nots and corporatism running amok of our governments, communities and environment while largest private fortunes stretch toward the highest peaks that history has ever seen, all the while the wealthy use byzantine corporate bureaucracies to separate themselves from any of the responsibility for the crimes committed in order to amass those fortunes, this talk has not aged well.

Is it ethical for managers of a company who want to give to a charity using the money of their shareholders instead of their own money. How about letting the shareholders get their dividends back and give to charities of their choosing? Some of these corporations give to' charities' that some of their shareholders would consider quite loathsome like the Southern Poverty Law Center or Planned Parenthood. If an initiative is good for the shareholders, helps grow the brand for example, helps grow an industry that the company is a part of, or if it is a way of making restitution for company operations that have harmed the public in some way, it makes sense. Contributions up to the extent they can be deducted from corporate taxes makes sense in countries that allow this, provided these are charities that shareholders can agree on. CSR can actually be unethical. It's easy to give other people's money away. I saw a news program in which a man who stole credit card numbers made a donation to poor starving children. The difference is he outright stole the credit card number as opposed to using a position as a steward to give away other people's money.

Being an authority to freely and safely responsibly put the proper care and quality into your service and deliver the empowering product of your work industry professionally, the receiver will have the imprint of good quality human culture included in effects, and choices that are valuable, useful. ACCOUNTABILITY and transparency in our transactions is empowering and stimulating, that makes and sustains the markets we need! But if all people are to lose the silent stifling battle of political attacks on liberty and. justice we will not survive and not have a market. Charities will do no good because without justice and liberty, no charity will be supported and free from corruptions because individuals will be targeted and controlled and have no rights and no due process law BECAUSE OF MONOPOLIZING,PUBLIC/PRIVATE CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS AND CORPORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS A PROMOTIONAL FRONT FOR GLOBAL COMMUNISM. SOCIALIST DOMINATION. YOU'RE BEING SOLD OUT FROM SOVEREIGNTY and its protections and jurisdictional empowerment of free markets, private rights, property, living, food developing and choices including locality for conveniently near and yet able to trade elsewhere without globalist overcontrolling and political sanctioning based in service to a monopoly or oligarchy or one world enclosure, militarized probably too . Our police officers, medical, legal, education, social workers are all experiencing individual targeting along with the parents, children, families and seniors and pastors, churches synagogues and mosques, temples, and all PUBLIC SERVANTS ie. Political leadership.************ No** DUE PROCESS JUSTICE **IS POLITICAL TERRORISM AND EXTORTION HAPPENING ALL OVER WORLD AND AMERICA!
