@Scootman5 жыл бұрын
Traditionally, you play all down strokes and just barely hit the lower strings on your way down to strumming the higher strings and use a very quick, slap back style delay with a short decay time (one, maybe two repeats) for the "upstroke" part of the sound. Most people want to play upstrokes because of the habit of playing a down stroke on the down beat and an upstroke on the offbeat. Otherwise good video
@schmoo34075 жыл бұрын
Scootman yea this upstroke technique is more of the ska style
@chrispygingerpie5 жыл бұрын
Was going to say the same, by only doing upstrokes you miss a lot of the dynamics/percussion. Also as you’ve said they’re normally playing fuller chords, not just triads.
@Scootman5 жыл бұрын
@@chrispygingerpie Yeah the lower strings are more for the percussive scratchy, "skank" part of the sound and you barely even fret those notes. You just EQ your amp to have very little bass frequencies so they don't clash with the bass line. Playing all upstrokes is the way umm... "California" reggae and ska punk bands play reggae so it's not necessarily wrong, just different a different style from the traditional Jamaican reggae/ska. And yes, the old school ska is still played as downstrokes. There's a video of The Skatalites playing Sunsplash 2018 and you can clearly see the guitar player doing all downstrokes. I firmly believe this has a lot to do with the way Western music is typically played/taught where you downstroke on the down beats and upstroke on the offbeats. If you are learning to alternate pick, this is how you're taught and when most people read that reggae is played on the offbeat or upbeat, they automatically assume to play all upstrokes. Also, the triad sound is probably coming from the keyboards. If you listen close to a lot of reggae, the keyboard is mixed louder than the guitars and they typically play triads on the offbeat with the guitar. The guitar is like the least important part of reggae. To quote a song: "We nah think 'bout the guitar strummin', it's all about the bass, riddim, and drummin'"
@chrispygingerpie5 жыл бұрын
@@ScootmanGot to agree with this, Especially the EQ bit! I have a HSS guitar with no tone and my split humbucker is great for this tone.
@downwardisheavenward30065 жыл бұрын
Schmoo I'd love to see you play any kinda ska only playing upstrokes
@CitizenWarwick5 жыл бұрын
It's not quite right IMO. First reggae chuck is all downstrokes (although there is no hard rule). And also mostly you place your fingers on the strings without fretting the notes and slightly dig in as you hit the strings for the chuck. All your strokes have far to much sustain.
@MikaelLewisify5 жыл бұрын
Citizen Warwick...and technically you wouldn’t be playing on the offbeat. That’s not quite the right feel if one is paying attention to the one drop.
@mdub51792 жыл бұрын
Definitely do not agree with the sustain statement. The skank has many different variations. To say this way is wrong is well....wrong. You can have a very short sustain to a bit longer sustain, just depends on the feel you're going for.
@Taldaran2 жыл бұрын
The best way to get the chuck is to mute with the heel of your strumming hand lightly on the strings to get the percussion and just like a studio fader, let up the mute to fade in the actual sound of the notes when you strum.

Since you happen to know a bit about it (someone commented the thing as you too btw so you must be right), is a minor pentatonic in the same key as the chord progression good as basis for improv ?
