The USA dominated the sport for decades, but the league wanted to go international and promoted Michael Jordan like there was no tomorrow turning him into a world wide sensation and creating a wave of basketball love around the globe, this is new wave of euro players not only will make the NBA better, but the international competitions as well, now some of the best players will be playing for their countries and what ginobili did in 2004 might not end up being an anomaly, but the first of many gold medals that the us might not be able to get.

@derionone You mean Yugoslavia, because except for Greece (much lower level) only Yugoslavia excelled in basketball, winning multiple WC,Euros and only US were better, once the professional players started playing! USSR had some great teams, but only because they were huge and physically strong! Anyway, we destroyed them, most of the time and in the finals of European Championship in Belgrade, our guards played beachball with each other, humiliating the giants after utterly dominating the game!

It's a problem of American basketball, and sports in general, culture. American sports all want to be the solo star - but Euro leagues, culture, and especially coaches focus strictly on the team and skills above everything. Doesn't matter how good you are, if you stop playing for the team your ass will be benched.
@boreopithecus Жыл бұрын
Basketball is a small sport in Europe. If Europe took basketball (or football or baseball or hockey or any team sport for that matter) seriously the US would not be able to compete as the European player development systems and league organizations are much more efficient. It’s a do or die free market where you’re scouted in childhood and start playing professionally against adults at 17. In the US system players dick around in college for four years, and the worst teams are rewarded with better draft picks while in Europe they are kicked out of the league and replaced with the best teams from the league below.

@@jamanwashington9478 NBA just paved the way for the NBA, not the sport smh Basketball is doing fine outside the USA. While domestic players are constantly bickering about trades, contracts, money, playing time, rest etc. - and often times have nothing to show for it in their short time in the league. Euro players are coming in and getting to work. Edit: That's not a knock at the talent, but lately the NBA has been more about theatrics and headlines rather then results and that attitude sucks. The NBA today is more of a Netflix series than a competitive sport.

Diversity in the NBA will lead to less viewership on television and fewer people going to games. Just like manufacturing moving to China, the NBA will move all the teams to Europe. Americans will switch to watching and going to college and high school games.

In the 80s-90s basketball in Europe was a completely different game compared to today. Just 2 20 minutes halfs, 30 second attacks, 1+1 ft, shorter 3p lines (6.25m). While in the 90s there was this focus on defence and zoning based on Malkovic team Limoges. Games were tense but awful in quality with just 50-60 points per team, sometimes going at 40. It was very difficult for Europeans to adapt to the nba. When rules changed to 4 10 minutes quarters and 24 seconds and longer 3p line (6.75 instead of 6.25) European basket in high level play became more similar to nba and on national team level usa had some surprising and less surprising defeats and the gap was reduced. Gone were the Dream Team dominance days.

Pre-heavy enforcement of the illegal D and handchecking, Shaq will murder on the post. Is he more skilled than Jokic? Doubt it, but during his career, he is certainly more effective. It's not a dig to euro basketball that NBA players has more successes. If Jokic and the Nuggets can repeat, I'll entertain your discussion. But til then, he's certainly not in Shaq's league, yet. They search for the best players around the world to play in the NBA, that's why it feels like the league is dominated by foreign stars. Despite the rest of the world catching up, the U.S. still dominates basketball if the best players actually play. Only if you pit the rest of the world against the U.S. would the competition be fair. The idea of "the world" vs USA for all-star had been around for a while, I wish the NBA allows that.

Its the culture of HS and collage Teams. They have one main star and the world is runing in circles against them. Everyone is working for them to make them look as good as possible as it ads prestige to those schools and their programms. Also. The opposition is not exactly strong. You can play very good Teams but also bunch of amateurs or kids who are much smaller than those draft prospect freaks of nature. But. The point being. America is telling you that you are the main star. The main guy. And everyone else is second to you. Since young age. You cant expect those guys to not be arogant, to focus on fundamentals if their whole job for years is the best highlight reel. Europe is different. If you are good enough (I was in football for example) you will play with the main team in the league. Against professionals and adults. Every team has one or two of those talented guys who try to break through, but they are not even close to being the main guy and must work their asses off on and off the court for the team or they are out. Its very different dunking on 14yo kids whoa are 180cm tops or play grown men who are all 195 and more and much bigger than you. And to be called up to the main team, you need to be great. You need to know fundamemtals. Tldr. America makes you arogant prick. Europe makes you humble and team oritented.

On the other hand the games in US in High School or so seem to be a dunking contest often and they don´t learn basketball on high level. Also in college, if you don´t play e.g. in Duke and March Madness, it seems often not hardest competition as some guys still growing. Just look at Wemby...he played first France League with 19 years old and did dominate but not too much (e.g. bad shooting), but he did play grown man and you don´t need to explain everything to him.

There is a player named Alperen Sengun from Turkey, I think you do not know him obviously who is the center of the Rockets. He is the HIM. Spurs is not down the NBA. ALperen is 21 years old.

I still think the best player is the professor. Nobody can dribble like him. The professor is above the NBA. Players in the NBA should learn his moves.

Paul George and Tatum were training with him

do you think the professor would be in the nba (maybe even one of the best?) when he was taller? (like 6´3 or 6´4)

This is ignoring the Europeans who first went through the D1 to get ready for the nba First real wave was maybe Detlef Schrempf, Rik Smits Both were stars on division leading teams for years and were all stars. Schrempf in particular was very very good. But they came in with no real European pro experience.
