That tickled me the first time I went. If you arrive a bit early and go in the services (possibly closed due to COVID at the mo) there are signs out of the car park there as well saying "this way to France". I suppose it has the added benefit of being totally 100% clear to anyone who can read basically any European language. You might not understand "this way to the shuttle" but *FRANCE* and a big arrow is pretty obvious 😀

I went on Le Shuttle in 2008 (memories.lol) on my bike. Fantastic experience. Riding tho the shuttle carriages was like going thro an alleyway. So when all vehicles were secure, it was time for departure. It was so smooth moving off. I didn't realise we were moving. We were in France before u knew it. On arrival, it felt like it was a movie set. As I hadn't left the shore by boat (so it felt like I hadn't left the country). It was a weird feeling. I then rode into Calais an found a place to stay overnight. Set off for Paris the next day, ready for an even bigger adventure. Then I flew to Italy for The Italian Motorcycle show in Milan..

Brought back wonderful memories of my trip from London to Venice aboard the Orient express! Boarded a nice vintage train in London and then transferred to large luxurious coaches with champagne, sandwiches and snacks at the terminal. Changed all my money to Euros before we left. This huge coach then drove along the platform and onto the train. When we arrived in France, i just couldn’t figure out how that HUGE coach was going to make the turn out of the train onto the adjacent platform until I saw that the coach in front of us had four wheel steering!!!! Made the turn quite easily! Thanks for letting me relive a wonderful adventure again!!., A++++

I would prefer the ferry. This route through an incredibly badly designed road layout is awful. With the ferry you drive off the A20, a short way through/around Dover, then into the terminal and border control and drive on to the ferry! Done. So simple. And the sea crossing is just 90 minutes. You can stretch your legs, have a snack in the restaurant, enjoy the sea breeze.

The first that always sticks out for me when travelling from Canada to the UK or USA is that speed limits are in miles and there's no bi-lingual signage anywhere. So it's pretty neat to see sign in km and French in the UK.

We don't need no stinkin' metric system....we tried it in the 80's and stopped using it in design and construction over 15 years ago. It was a failure.
@JV-pu8kx3 жыл бұрын
@@spuds6423 If it weren't for pirates, we would have already gone metric in the early 1800's. Jefferson ordered a meter standard from France and pirates grabbed the ship carrying the standard and the U.S. did not order a replacement. It would have been too expensive, at the time. Technically, we have gone metric as all measurements are now defined by their metric equivalents.

Fascinating for me now living in the USA but having crossed the Channel by just about every method except swimming! From the Night Ferry to the early car transporting flights out of Lydd (?) when my son accidentally set off a foam fire extinguisher to Hovercraft .... oh yes ordinary car ferry boats out of Calais and Portsmouth. And once each way as passengers on the Eurostar when it left from Waterloo. I've heard from my son in the UK about using it frequently and slipping over to just pick up booze! So now it's all in context since at 96 I won't be coming back to try this. So from one Welshman surely "Thank you Idris" !

American also here. I took my rental car across the Channel to France via the tunnel/train many, many years ago while on vacation in England. We had planned to go to the Normandy Beaches. We booked our ticket months in advance. Unfortunately by the time I got there the French being who they are, the gas station attendants and tanker drivers had gone on strike, to no gar was to be had in France. I ended up filling on on the British side and then could only go 1/2 of a tank in before I had to turn around. That took me to Rouen (where they burned Joan of Arc). Beautiful city with a great cathedral but it wasn't where I had intended to go. It was interesting. This was before there even was an EU. There is a huge mall on the French side and you'd see hundreds of British cars packed to bursting with cases of beer because it was cheaper to cross and buy than to get it in the UK then, so they'd ride over, stock up, and ride right back.
@Rhine0Cowboy3 жыл бұрын
@@currentsitguy It's pretty weird to describe the period between opening the tunnel (1988) and the Maastricht treaty (1993) going into effect as "before there even was an EU". Been on Eurotunnel many times but this is different. Never ever seen the whole facility so quiet, even late at night - anybody who hasn't used Eurotunnel shouldn't come to the conclusion this is what its always like as there's usually more queuing at the various check points. Clearly you're in a van as you going through the high vehicle boarding but what is the PMMWC thing about? I've always been in cars and sometimes we've been called into the security bays on the opposite side between the two passport controls but the checks are quick and nobody has to get out of the car. If they're changing to that sort of PMMWC check for everybody, then its really going to slow down

Hi Chris, PMMWC is short of Passive Millimeter Wave Camera. I believe they randomly choose vehicle to scan. Its a extra procedure to make sure you not carrying any illegal substance.

I've driven in Ireland for years whenever we visit. So switching the driver's seat side of the car is nothing new. But when you drive your UK Van in France, isn't the driver's seat on the "Wrong" side, since France drives on the same side of the road as the US does? Do you find it hard to switch road sides, while still sitting on the same side of the van?
@fryfrysk3 жыл бұрын
@ 8.18 No, technically you are not in France, but still in the UK under GB jurisdiction , but you have just cleared French border control and customs ; on arrival in Calais you can drive straight on . At Calais travelling towards the UK your are still in France after being cleared by british border control. This was agreed between countries to prevent hugh traffic jams just after leaving the train. Travelling by train e.g; Eurostar from Amsterdam to London; UK bordercontrol is now even at Bruxelles ( in future this will also be at the starting point at Amsterdam, when construction on the new Eurostar terminal is finished) en of course vice versa.: dutch bordercontrol at st.Pancras station in London..

After reading through most comments, I have to give old time stories, hey I'm an old guy. My father was in the USAF. In 1957 he was assigned to a base in France, near Dreux. During the summer we would take trips around France and into other countries. The parental units were willing to try new things and new places. We drove every where. Crossing the boarders was interesting. Being military we probably got through faster than most, but it was stop, show papers on this side. Drive forward a few feet, sorry meters, stop, show papers, done, move along please. For a 12/14 year old it was something I had only seen in movies.

The type of test needed to enter France isn't available on the NHS unless you have some of the main COVID symptoms.

Remember the good old days before this modern wonder. You had to buy ticket, pass custom, passport control. Answer questions from the officials. Then line up, and wait to get aboard your transportation...Hmm..Wait?

It wasn't good at all. It was bureaucratic, time consuming and a waste of money. The UK joining the single market was the best thing to happen, pretty stupid to throw that away. When the majority of British people are allowed to travel again, they will soon realise this.

This is from third country to EU, I passed from Ukraine toPoland in my car a few years back, same thing but also from a country at war! It took 8 hours and the last stop was a garage where they just dismantled a whole bus. All my luggage was checked but when my UN blue beret turned up in a bag they stop direct searching and let me drive away. 😂

Well I'm not sure how it is now but pre-January 2021, this was all you had to do. Once past French passport control, you arrived in the Schengen area. It was almost as if you were flying between London and Edinburgh or state to state in the USA as there were no further checks. I had this experience on Eurostar and the ferry. Once you landed in France, Belgium or the Netherlands there were no other checks. Now I'm not so sure how the system works post-January 1st 2021. Haven't been able to travel because of the coof virus. Before you could just pack the car, get a single ferry ticket and rock up to anywhere in Europe as if you were in a single country. Now we are separated, you have to get a visa stamp, a return ticket and return within 90 days.

Hi Yiming, they didnt ask for insurance document and green card either. I will suggest you get the green card from your insurer. Bear in mind that it takes 21 days for you to receive the green card.
