In the end Tencent dropped out of the project and Top Gun: Maverick wasn't allowed to be shown in China, the Japanese and Taiwanese flags were restored and the movie managed to gross over $1.500 million. @@pablocasas5906 actually Disney is trying to pivot away from it after getting burnt by Mulan (and also China increased their censorship laws so any LGBT or Racial diversity would not be allowed). no they don’t. they acknowledge it a lot more than we here in the us have acknowledged the centuries of horror towards the Indigenous people whose land we stole and whose children we sent to resident schools (death camps). the reason it’s not that big of a deal is because it wasn’t a “massacre” as western media has claimed (without evidence). there were hospitalizations, but unlike the US police state, they don’t kill unarmed peaceful protestors.

I lived in Beijing for 6 months and have had WeChat on my phone for nearly 2 years now. Any extended stay in the country unfortunately seems to necessitate using the app. I only used cash on two occasions, and both times it was treated like I handed them Monopoly money. I’ve done my best to limit the information I’ve shared on the app, but it’s hard to not feel uncomfortable about what data or metadata it may collect from the rest of my phone. Most of my Chinese friends use VPNs, but for people like my old host family or others I met in China, WeChat is the only way I can reach them and so I’ve been hesitant to get rid of the damn app. As always, awesome video with better research and thought than most content on the platform, especially about China.

@@panprd where did you hear China’s social credit can land you in jail? that’s... just not true from anything i’ve read. also lol at FICO won’t prevent you from getting a nicer home. Pls google what caused the 2007-2008 financial collapse and credit redlining. both systems suck, but the key difference is that FICO doesn’t limit access to public institutions like libraries and transportation while China does. Even then, the financial burden incurred by a low FICO score makes public facilities like state universities inaccessible to many families. So which poison do you prefer? The ultra-restrictive state owned social credit? Or the marginally less restrictive but unregulated privatized credit that occasionally spins out of control and causes economic crashes?

I find it hilarious that the CCP is producing english language rap song about how great they are because it shows such a vast disconnect between them and the American rap industry. Rap in the US is born from struggle and protest, and even now, where rap is often times more focused on presenting a level of descendant wealth that is hard to even comprehend, those songs are still about achieving that wealth despite the government and society you live in trying to prevent it. Even the most over the top, hedonistic party rap trash still includes antiestablishment themes. So the fact that the CCP thinks they can influence western youth through propaganda rap is utterly ridiculous, considering that the entire foundation of rap, no matter how pro consumerism it may be, is fucking off the chain hilarious. They clearly have absolutley zero idea about how actual Westerners live and view the world, but for good and for bad.

Yeah post industrial-revolution power structures are really fucked. And things only become more lopsided, the more technology advances. Its why I advocate for anarchism. Its the only position that outright says fuck the state and fuck big corporates.

@@axeSyntax The primary issue with this line of thought is that China, specifically the CCP is communist in name alone. Workers do not own the businesses and production in China, it still has a private sector. The main difference in corporations in China when compared to America is that where American corporations have large influence in government, Chinese companies are used as an extension of the government. Corporate capitalism vs state capitalism. It's really all kinda the same thing, the money is just flowing the opposite direction. Opinions incoming.. This, coupled with different cultural ideology and governmental approaches, causes western eyes to see the blatant propaganda in and from China for what it is easily. All the while turning a blind eye, or even supporting the same processes happening in our own backyard.
