Aircraft Carriers completely changed the landscape of war with the ability to launch attacks much closer to enemy territory and retrieve the aircraft without sacrificing the expensive machines. But these behemoths of the sea were not always the dominating war machines we know of today. Check out our epic new video to learn about how aircraft carriers have evolved to become a staple in every major military's arsenal.

Aircraft carriers existed during the American Civil War. Hot air balloons were launched and returned to ships to keep a lookout on the Confederacy Coast with some even venturing in land before returning. The frist heavy aircraft carriers (that carried planes appeared later) Edited 8/2/221849 the Austrian Navy ship SMS Vulcano was the frist to use balloons from the ship for military bombing in the first offensive use of air power in naval aviation. However these balloons were unmanned and were recorded to have also dropped their payloads back onto Austrian lines. American unionists did use manned balloons for warfare

@islandmaster5064
@islandmaster5064 2 жыл бұрын
@@bejaminmaston1347 Aircraft carriers are warships that evolved from balloon-carrying wooden vessels into nuclear-powered vessels carrying scores of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. Since their introduction they have allowed naval forces to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. Balloon carriers were the first ships to deploy manned aircraft, used during the 19th and early 20th century, mainly for observation purposes. The advent of fixed-wing aircraft in 1903 was followed in 1910 by the first flight from the deck of a US Navy cruiser. Seaplanes and seaplane tender support ships, such as HMS Engadine, followed. The development of flat top vessels produced the first large fleet ships. This evolution was well underway by the early to mid-1920s, resulting in the commissioning of ships such as Hōshō (1922), HMS Hermes (1924),[1] Béarn (1927), and the Lexington-class aircraft carriers (1927).

I feel while an interesting anecdote, I don’t see ballon launching as “aircraft”. This is like people who believe that the Gatling gun was “the first machine gun”. No the Gatling wasn’t and balloons aren’t!!! As I said I understand why you bring it up. However it is in a different related category that invalidated it.

AEGIS defenses, along with patriot and THAAD, (designed to intercept ICBM re-entry vehicles at various ranges) can hypothetically target and defeat hypersonic missles (which are slower then re-entry vehicles.) They travel in mostly straight trajectories and their mobility is limited due to speed. Close in engagement systems like the Phalanx deal with massed carriers threats. Not to say it's indestructible, but it doesn't sail by itself. It has a whole fleet of capable ships that coordinate together to protect the carrier

Technically, the first "aircraft carrier" was the Lon Springstead in 1908. During the early 1900's Alexander Graham Bell (yes the telephone guy) teamed up with aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss in Hammondsport, NY to test their Red Wing aircraft. They did this on a mostly frozen Keuka Lake and used the Lon Springstead to transport the plane to the best section of ice. There's actually pictures of the event. So while the plane didn't take off or land from it, this was the fist time a plane had ever been transported via water.

Hmm. yeah. Same could be said about any ship. Can an Arleigh Burke destroyer stop 1,200 missiles? Probably not. Yet the navy has funded the construction of more of them, because the current doctrine requires them. Can the Freedom-class Litoral combat ship stop 1,200 missiles? probably not. 1,200 missiles is an insane number that no ship could stop in a short period of time. Something is also to be said about the time period. In just 3 hours? no. In several weeks? probably. Over the course of months? Absolutely.

@@derekfordyce9 Yes exactly they are good for a show of force but in actual combat scenario against a capable adversary with long range cruise missiles they have become pretty much obslete a single missile hitting your carrier and it's 30-40 billion dollars down the drain if you even count the cost of aircrafts upon it plus Aircraft Carriers are hard to hide and do not come in stealth configuration in case of any major conflict in the past century every navy tries to hide it's carriers cuz they know the risk of enemy going specifically after carriers is extremely high and is a huge loss both to moral and thousands of lives, that's why Nuclear Subs are more practical in a modern naval wars .

Really strange they can't vary the force from steam catapults. Seems like it would be easy to adjust the rate they released steam to build up pressure.

Yeah I thought that. We could adjust steam boilers for 100s of years. Why not now?
@PancakeBoi

@@kieronparr3403 nuclear is more effective, as both a power and a fuel source. Steam requires diesel engines, which means oil is required which makes operation time for a Aircraft carrier limited. Nuclear can power an aircraft carrier for 25 years without a need to change the fuel. Not having to rely on that limitation is why America wants to use nuclear.

I have a hard time seeing how aircraft carriers can defend against hypersonic missiles if a war broke out tomorrow. They need those laser defense systems ASAP.

hypersonic missiles are overhyped, ships are incredibly hard to track and even if you do hit the carrier, it can withstand multiple hits
@PK-kr5bk

The interesting point to make is that a carrier can withstand way more damage than any other ship. Look up uss america, you would then understand how any missile would be a waste of money, unless it’s a nuke.

No Essex class carrier was sunk. The Franklin took horrendous damage yet survived. Enterprise had a nasty fire but still came back. Forestall was even worse. The america took over 10 days of live fire exercise before demo teams had to go in and blow open the seacocks and she didn’t have personnel to try to save her. The US knows how to build great ships, but we also get trained in firefighting, every person must go through firefighting school. You don’t have to know how to swim but you better know how to man a hose!
