It's been 14 years in the making and a lot of stuff has happened since it all began. Great video. I bought an iPad in 2019 for surfing on the sofa. Just a couple months later I was bored and I thought aren’t there any apps music making? I looked at the appstore and I thought wow, this is a professional platform for music making. I used Cubase, Rebirth, Reason and Hammerhead on a PC in the early 2000s but then I got married and had kids and I lost my spare time. Fast fwd to 2019, my kids are big and I have time for a hobby again, the music apps on my iPad sucked me back into music making. I really enjoy it a lot. Looking at your timeline music making on the iPad came a long way. There are still many features that hadn’t made their way from the desktop world to iOS but I love the direct interaction and the creative workflows on the iPad. It gets better and better virtually every day. Great times being ahead of us .

Yeah, sometimes I look at a several thousand dollar vintage synth (like the Juno 106) or modern day equivelants like the Behringer Deepmind ($1000), Roland JU-06 ($700) and the look at my bog standard 2018 iPad, which is running a pixel-perfect replica of a Roland Juno for $20 (TAL UNO-LX) with minimal latency. The touchscreen matches well with a slider type interface. Oh yeah, I owned a Juno 106 back in the day, this thing gives me goosebumps, its so accurate! It is also available as a VST.

I still hope they return the 3.5 jack, the main reason I'm still on the 2017 12.9" (although I very like the usb-c which does not require additional power for focusrite 2x2 and other devices), and they removed it from the mini 9 that was very sad

As much as I agree with you on the 3.5mm audio jack in IOS devices, Apple will not go back and sunk and destroyed that bridge years ago. Audio jack dongles are annoying yet a solution for our niche audio needs. Isn’t it hypocritical for Apple claiming to care about Clinate change and call itself Eco friendly while eliminating the 3.5mm audio jack forcing us to go out to buy a dongle or resort to power hungry & disposable Bluetooth headphones/EarPods that won’t last as long as wired headphones!

Not a great jack by the way, the auto detection on the microphone part of the jack is flakey at best 🙄 and the only really small audio interfaces kinda sound crappy - iRig?! Ugh.

Great overview. As well as some of the early classics mentioned above (sunvox, jasuto, geoshred), it might be good to have some mention of the early midi sequencers. I loved Genome, and am still quite sad that little midi machine has gone. Jordan Rudess' early support of the platform with his apps like morphwiz and samplewiz and his enthusiasm about new apps. Some of the great synth emulations like korg IMS20 and IVCS-3, Vogel CMI, Model -D, etc There were some really neat phone size apps like ocarina and especially thumbjam. iPad was also great as a programmable control surface with Lemur or Midi Designer. And as someone else mentioned some of the hardward integration. I had an Akai Synthstation 25 for the phone/ipod touch. And an early 30pin to midi controller for interfacing with external synths.

Great overview, I got into the iPad music making around 2018. A year before I had bought a Yamaha reface DX and discovered there where some handy apps for managing patches for it. I soon discovered the Fairlight CMI pro and the Korg apps since then. For me Korg Gadget and Steinberg Cubasis form a powerful combination. I also use the Cubasis import feature in Cubase a lot. Very convenient to start a mix on the iPad and finish it on the PC with the desktop version of Cubase.

Hi Jakob, wow fantastic time line run down . Thank you for that. For me when it comes to iPad production it was two big things. The introduction of cubasis. Now don’t get me wrong when I say this next part, but a lot of the synths did and do sound very good, but for me I was always looking for a synth that could produce sounds similar or the same as some of the productions that hands Zimmer was doing. That happened when synthmaster 1 came in. At this point for me that’s when everything started to change, Then of course we had the arrival of synthmaster 2.

Bloom by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers (2008) was the one that started all for me. The 10th anniversary edition (2018) is even more amazing. The follow ups in 2012 (Trope and Scape) were also very cool. Oh, Ge Wang's Ocarina was a game changer too (I also love his book Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime ).

I think you did an excellent job getting down the basic skeleton of Apple mobile device development. You neglected to add the split between iOS, iPadOS, and mobile apps being able to run on M1 macOS. I think there’s been a significant development of the ability to do music videos that has occurred on these devices that could be a video all its own. There have been waves of development. Dongles are us and hardware integration, the rise of the synths, groove boxes, modulars, DAWS, FX apps, the great migration from desktop to mobile devices, MIDI sequencing and manipulation apps- could all have a treatment similar to the basic skeleton video you’ve already done. It would also be nice to have videos on topics that are underserved such as why Apple hasn’t supported the web MIDI standard yet on their mobile devices and the consequences of that. One very black day in history that you didn’t cover was when Apple stopped the payments for Affiliate Links- without this initial support many of the apps and the mobile music making community would have been much slower in developing.

I was looking for Thor synthesizer in the App Store but unfortunately it seemed to be discontinued 🙁 The reason why I want this synth for my iPad Pro is that one of my cute guinea pigs is called Thor. i got an iPad 3 in 2012. Had been making music on a desktop pc for a long time. I enjoyed the new touch stuff, and used stuff like loopy and iMschine etc. At some point I used it forplayback at live gigs. But a big problem always was: How to connect it, how to sync it. I was there at the beginning of interappaudio, audiobus etc. I tried lots of solutions of midi over wifi etc. I remember being pissed off about this nice new UI technology, but everything staying "gimmicky" and like 10 to 20 years behind normal PCs or MACs for syncing up your stuff. Also I hated that the iPads didnt get touch force, which would have been extremely cool for usage as a playablemidi device. you know - velocity and stuff :/ My iPad bricked in the second half of the 2010s and I never went back... sadly

I love the constant release of new apps BUT I HATE that both iOS and many devs are abandoning too soon cool apps and also iOS makes them unusable with every update, I know some devs don't have time to keep updating older apps but iOS should NOT make them unusable, I don't want to be buying new ipads every 3 years and I don't want my gear to become obsolete so soon, That's why I still love Windows as I can still run music programs and synths that are more than 10 years old on windows 10

It was officially included in iOS 4.2.1 but I believe it was unofficially (or accidentally) included in iPhoneOS 3.2.2 for the first iPad. From memory, Molten Drum Machine, FunkBox and StepPolyArp where the first apps to support CoreMIDI, though I don't recall which was released first. Molten with MIDI was released Dec 18 2010.
