Catapults, trebuchets, and ballistic - various types of weapons capable of providing long-range fire have been a vital element of military landscapes since ancient times. The invention of gunpowder and the subsequent development of what we now know as artillery eventually led to the creation of artillery shells - including the venerable 155mm round.
The French were the first to develop the 155 mm cartridge in response to extensive trench operations in World War I. Throughout the course of the conflict, the 155 mm became the most widely used round in Allied service, with the U.S. Army later adopting it as the standard heavy field artillery cartridge.
Today in Ukraine the 155mm ammunition is fired at a rate of 6 to 8 thousand per day by Kyiv's troops. They’re countered by an estimated 40,000 projectiles a day fired from Russian guns.
This allows us to ask some questions: How has artillery developed over the decades? How important is it in modern warfare, and can Europe catch up with Russia's arms production? Join Jan Darasz and his guest: Damian Ratka, Senior Editor, Analyst, defence24, for answers to these and other questions.
