Couldn't agree more, I love the re-recording of Artist in the Ambulance, I think it's artistically 'better' but the original just hits in a way I can't explain, pure nostalgia for my high school days, carpooling with my best friend and her older brothers every day after school and being 'subjected' to Thrice 😂. They really grew on me, probably listened to Illusion of Safety and Artist in the Ambulance a thousand times, still my favorite band 20 years later.

Thrice is one of the few bands who’s sound matured over time for the better. I loved Illusion of Safety and Identity Crisis and that style which culminated in The Artist and the Ambulance. With each subsequent album after that they distanced themselves and incorporated true music writing. Dustin said it best, those tunes were associated with that point in our life...for me I was a young 18 year old kid in Japan. They matured and so did I with each album. They’ll always be my favorite band because of that.

@takoshihitsamaru46756 жыл бұрын
phuck google That's a bit ignorant to say, friend. One of the biggest staplemarks of Thrice as a band is 'how' they change with each new album. Are you honestly going to refer to yourself as a real fan and in the same breath deny the musical brillance of The Alchemy Index, Vheissu and Major/Minor?? Thrice weave compelling stories about art, life, philosophy, dreams, faith, love and death through each new album, with every new track opening up another part of your subconscious until the instruments, vocals and sonic atmosphere paint a picture of many colours that leaves a lasting impact on your soul.
@wikdjester9616 жыл бұрын
@@phuckgoogle4027 don't speak for me. I've been listening to them since the beginning, and will continue to do so until they stop putting out records. Do you even realize how ridiculous it sounds to proclaim yourself a "real fan", and then proceed to dismiss their last 6 albums? just wanted to drop in and say a massive thank you for all the incredible music you've created over the years. Although I don’t play an instrument or sing, I've been a huge fan of each of your albums and I’m always blown away by your creative power and musical evolution. Tracks like "Phoenix Ignition," "A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds," "Image of the Invisible," "Digital Sea" (Alchemy Index), "Broken Lungs," "Circles and In Exile," "Yellow Belly," "The Long Defeat," "My Soul," and "Northern Lights" truly showcase your progression and versatility. And that’s just scraping the surface. Dustin Kensrue’s solo work and acoustics are phenomenal too. Your style of change reminds me of when I’d introduce friends to songs from City and Colour and then reveal that Dallas Green is also the voice behind Alexisonfire. It’s that level of versatility and mastery. Honestly, this is a humble attempt to say thanks for being a part of my spiritual journey. Your music has been a constant companion and source of inspiration.

Granted, that took more than a decade, but I love this band now.

The way I see it, their sound should have evolved because they grew as people and individuals. You can't be that same angsty teenager forever, ya know? That's what true artists do, they evolve. If all they do is rehash the same sound because it's "What the fans want" then they'll become frustrated and implode. No matter what, the music should reflect the artist as they are, not as they were.

I feel this one hard. I listened to all the bands growing up that came up around the same time Thrice did. Chevelle, Staind, Three Days Grace, Godsmack, Seether, etc. But, somehow, through all of that, Thrice fell through the cracks for me. I only really discovered them recently after hearing Seether's cover of Black Honey and its been life-changing. At 32, I thought I was done discovering music that I could connect with in the same way that I connected with things in my angst-ridden teens when a lot of their earlier stuff came out. Their stuff may not technically be as "heavy" now, but my god, they still pack such an emotional punch and never leave me wanting as a listener. I've gone back and listened to their older stuff and I absolutely love the way their sound and their musicianship has matured. I may have missed them initially but they definitely have my attention now.

To my understanding, ATITA was one of their least favorite albums because they had little to no creative control over their material, and had to rush the record out. I could be wildly off my mark on this, but I thought that was the main reason why they went indie when they recorded Vheissu.
@xamillustration6 жыл бұрын
Vheissu was still under the major record label, I think you were referring to The Alchemy Index, that's where they went to indie route.
@spencercoles18006 жыл бұрын
Yeah after looking it up they did record Vheissu with a producer, but I believe that I read somewhere in one of their interviews that they had very little creative control over AITA. Again, I could be wrong about that as well.

Yeah, this is true. Vheissu was the catalyst that pushed them into their current sound. Island records also weren't too fond of the artistic route they were going and wanted more "hits" than where they were headed. All in all, Thrice made a good decision.
