Been listening to them since they released their debut in 2000. Hard to believe it's been 20 years, but it's awesome to see that they're still at it and evolving as musicians.

As a musician I totally get it, but It's honestly depressing to see almost joke on his old riffs like he will never write shit like that again. Because I'd give them all my money to produce even something close to Vheissu again, that album was the perfect blend of heavy and beautiful melody. I remember buying The Artist in the Ambulance and War All the Time on I think on the same day in Hot Topic. The early 2000's were incredible.
@Strizz4843 жыл бұрын
Yup. As much as he's a master of tone, creativity and restraint these days, the guy could fucking shred and wrote catchy riffs like they were nothing. The Illusion Of Safety and TAITA are a masterclass in catchy metal riffs.

Why are so many artists ashamed of their old music, especially if it was heavy. These interviews with hardcore artists commonly have moments where they'll mention old music they played, and downtalk the music and themselves. Growing as an artist is good, but be proud of what got you to where you are. Don't worry about what the scene kids today think. Under a killing moon was amazing. The whole album was, and songs like that got so many of us through that period of time. I certainly hope that, at least at the time, there was some emotional connection for them to that song. If not, they sure can write incredible music outside of what they enjoy. Thrice is one of the few hardcore bands that evolved, and continue to still put out incredible music. Love you guys
@losgryfog5 жыл бұрын
I think for thrice, based solely on interviews and comments from the members and some comments from fans. They faced a lot of backlash from not "typecasting" themselves and wanting to create different sounds. So they feel a need to defend where they are and what they're doing. At a certain point they became very blunt about it, like you hear Teppei here, "I don't like playing like that". I follow Dustin and Riley and know for a fact they listen to heavy metal, just doesn't mean Dustin wants to scream on every song HE sings.

"So yeah our old stuff is lame" **plays fun cheesy riff from Under A Killing Moon** "Our awesome new stuff with feel is way better" **plays a chord progression any 90s alternative band could have come up with** As much as I love Thrice's evolution as a band, I don't think anybody kids themself that TIOS > Alchemy was their golden era. Even their early cheesy Metallica-meets-Refused-meets-In Flames stuff was REALLY good for what it was, especially in the riff department. Everything since M/M is average to good - they've never put out a bad album - but they kinda feel autopilot and missing that energy and experimental spark they were known for. I totally get outgrowing your old material, but keeping and celebrating those beginnings to what made you who you are today is a big part of keeping that inner creative fire lit AND keeping the fans happy, imo.
