My wife bought me a new 2007 blue R1 for Christmas 2007. I still have it and ride it to work on nice days and burn up the roads on Sundays. I’m 62 and still get a thrill turning that puppy loose and letting it fly !!!!

I'm 46 and just got back into riding. Bought an 03 R1 with only 10k miles on it and it's an extremely fun and amazing bike for street use. The 07 is incredible as well. Cheers to us old timers still rocking sportbikes 🍻

In 2000 the r1 did not jump up to 175 hp and then lose all that hp and go down to 152 in 2002. From every spec sheet I read the motor was nearly the same and hp was 148.8-152 depending on which article you read. BTW, 02/03 was the first motor to finally incorporate fuel injection. Most other manufacturers were using FI a few years earlier than Yamaha. I guess Yammy just didn't want to mess with an already great design. Therefore even the FI system was very similar to a carbureted system. Also, even though 04 jumped to 172 hp, it lost a lot of down low power and was slower than the 1998-2003 from 0-100 mph. But after that, it's extra 2000 rpms and 20 hp made it pull much faster at high speeds. 0-60 in 03 2.9 secs. 0-60 in 04 3 secs. 04 1/4 mile was only 1/10th of a second faster at 10.10 compared to 10.20 in 03. But trap mph was 154 while 03 was 140. So the 04 was a monster at higher speeds. 03 was better for street use.

I love the fact that in 2009 they used crossplane for R1, and it all started back in 2003/2004 when Valentino Rossi decided to move to Yamaha after his back-to-back title with Honda NSR500 (2001) and RCV211V (2002-2003), Vale impressed by the YZR-M1 braking and and handling capability, but had one complaint, it was the power delivery, so the main engineer, Koichi Tsuji experimenting with numbers of engine, and decide to change it from flatplane to crossplane, changing from traditionally 5 valves per cylinder to 4 valves per cylinder, changing from a "screamer" engine into "long-bang" engine, mimicking the constant kinetic energy of V4 but still keeping it as Inline-4, making the bike literally faster in the corner since the bike is easier to control when it pushed to the limit, and Yamaha decided to used it in the mass-produced R1 after Vale's domination using M1 in 2004-2005 and 2008-2009

Previously bikes were made keeping physical attributes of general population in mind. In the last 10 years bikes are designed only for tall riders and not none are for short riders . Now one may point all those 250,500 or 600 cc bikes but there aren't any new liter bikes for us.
