«The exact opposite of the 'Wagner'»: what ex-marines from The Mozart Group do near Bakhmut

In March, former U.S. Marine Andy Milburn came to Ukraine to cover the war as a freelance journalist. He quickly realized he wanted to do more. Together with fellow marines, he organized training sessions for the Territorial Defense Forces while Kyiv was under siege. Shocked by what they had seen in Bucha, the ex-military decided to stay in Ukraine to help. Thus, The Mozart Group was created - a volunteer organization that trains the Ukrainian military and evacuates civilians from the most dangerous places near the frontlines.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. This might be some of the best investigative journalism I have seen of the entire war. I really hope your team gets the international recognition for what you are doing here. So many of big media company channels, just sound like they had a good night sleep in a 5 star hotel hundreds of kilometers from the fighting (often they are not even in Ukraine). This is real, old school, war reporting from the front lines. You guys are so close, in one video I thought your camerman was standing too close to a solider launching an RPG. I dont think I have ever seen a camera angle from any war, looking down the barrel and over the shoulder of a solider as they fire a rocket. That is simply incredible.

Здравствуйте, я из Мариуполя и к практика мне показала что в подъезде возле лифтов и в перегородках не чуть безопаснее, а то и хуже чем даже в самой квартире. У меня в подъезд 9 снарядов прилетело и да квартирах куда попало трэш полный, но взрывная волна повредила лифт, плиту между 1 и 2 этажом где закреплены почтовые ящики выбило вообще ( я на 2 как раз живу) и двери перегородок многие повылетали т.к были хуже чем квартирные. В итоге по моей части выгоднее было сидеть в квартире а не в камбузе или у лифта. А так лучше всего конечно подвалы в массовом плане, но у нас у многих 9-и этажках подвалы были даже не в полный рост и в нескольких домах в моём районе (ЖМР Восточный) к сожалению подвалы засыпало (В том плане что дому габэла полная и нижние этажи плиты, блоки и тд в подвале народ придавили) Так шо лучше всего подвал в полный рост и желательно в частном доме из кирпича. Ну и инструменты на всякий пожарный с собой взять если вдруг вход засыпит.

English approx Hello, I'm from Mariupol, and practice has shown me that the entrance near the elevators and in the partitions are not a little safer, and even worse, than even in the apartment itself. 9 projectiles flew into my entrance, and the apartments were full of trash, but the blast wave damaged the elevator, the slab between the 1st and 2nd floor, where the mailboxes are attached, was completely knocked out (I live on the 2nd floor), and many of the partition doors flew out because they were worse than apartments. In the end, for my part, it was more profitable to sit in the apartment and not in the galley or near the elevator. And of course basements are the best in the mass plan, but many of us have 9s The basements were not even full-height on the floors, and in several houses in my district (ZhMR Vostochny), unfortunately, the basements fell in. full growth and preferably in a private brick house. And take the tools for every firefighter with you if suddenly the entrance falls asleep.

Я с Харькова. Когда началась война мы с дочкой сидели 12 дней в подвале. Ждали что будет лучше. До сих пор жалею , что сразу не уехали. То что было дальше, сдомало психику.Потом приняла решение. Надо уезжать. Я мать одиночка Денег вообще не было. Но я рискнула.Очень помогали волонтеры. Сейчас беженцы в Испании. Сейчас тоже не легко но лучше чем под бомбежкой.Люди часто цепляются за дом,но не помимают,что собой они его не заслонят.

I’m a former marine of 16 yrs. FAST team and FRecon. I’ve contemplated joining these former Marines in this very nobel mission! The problem I have is just as when you’re in the military and in a combat zone, it’s just not smart to run these behind the lines (or extremely close to them) rescue, humanitarian etc...operations w/out a security element. I would love to come...but will only do so as part of an armed element...Legion or PMC, even just training others. I just will not be unarmed. I’ve been on the exact same end of tying to convince someone of leaving their home and pretty much all they know. It’s not an easy task at all. So I give the Marine attempting to help the family of 5-6 a lot of credit for his continued patience and great communication skills.These guys are a testament of compassion for what is usually deemed a lethal fighting force only! I had heard of the Mozart Group, and I am glad you did a video about them. I am probably a bit older than those ladies, and I can tell you that it is feels as frightening to abandon the house where you have lived in and raised your family as it is to stay in a battlefield. Not only are you leaving the home you made, but you are elderly, and you have no idea is you will be able to take care of yourself if your become homeless.

Leaving an empty house is one thing. What do you do when you have livestock? Your cows/dogs/cats/pigs/chicken will die if you leave. And they are pretty much all you have and what's keeping you fed and alive. Lots of small farmsteads out there...

I think this will be the overwhelming thing that comes out of this war... the stories of people like this, the millions of them. It's too much for any one person to comprehend, but we can see it after, we can empathise. Studying WW2 taught me a lot about life, how far people will go, how cruel people can be.... to see it being played out in real time is shocking, but there's also inspiration to be taken within all the madness.

As we heard from kerson region how there was no food for them under there controll specially for the ones close to the frontlines of russian controll..
